‘Build a prosperous frontier': Xi urges unity and development in message to Tibetans near India-China border

Chinese President Xi Jinping has urged Tibetan villagers residing near the Indian border to play a role in promoting prosperity and stability in the region.
'Learning that the village has undergone new changes in recent years and villagers' incomes have increased, I feel happy for you,' Xi replied to a letter received from residents of Nyingchi, a prefecture-level area located close to the Arunachal Pradesh border.
China considers Arunachal Pradesh part of South Tibet, a claim firmly rejected by India.

Xi became the first Chinese president to visit Tibet's border areas during a 2021 trip to Nyingchi.
In his letter, Xi expressed hope that local residents would continue to follow Communist Party policies aimed at developing border regions and improving livelihoods. He also encouraged efforts to preserve the area's natural environment, build a strong tourism brand, and contribute to a stable and prosperous border region.
In recent years, China has built a number of villages along the Tibetan border areas to ensure border security and development.
In his letter, Xi also urged the people in the Tibet Autonomous Region to uphold ethnic solidarity and create a happier and better life, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
During his 2021 visit to Nyingchi, Xi visited the Nyang River Bridge to inspect the ecological preservation in the basin of the Brahmaputra River, which is called Yarlung Zangbo in the Tibetan language.
Last year, China approved the construction of the world's largest dam, stated to be the planet's biggest infrastructure project, costing USD 137 billion, on the Brahmaputra river in Tibet, which has raised concerns in the riparian states of India and Bangladesh.

In a wide-ranging interview just after the finance ministry said India was in a 'Goldilocks situation'—not too hot, not too cold, but just right—Sitharaman said this was the outcome of 11 years of work by the Narendra Modi government. The Centre is looking to simplify the goods and services tax (GST) and income tax further, ensure the availability of critical supplies, speed up land monetisation, and strengthen regional rural banks. Amendments to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code are also expected to be placed before Parliament soon. Banking is going through one of its best cyclical phases but more lenders are welcome, while IDBI Bank privatisation is expected this year, she said. 'You have good momentum on the ground. And I hope going forward, I would think this momentum will be accentuated because the monsoon seems to come up with good news,' Sitharaman said on the health of the economy as summer rain covered the country nine days ahead of schedule. 'I hope to finish it soon,' she said. 'That would bring in a lot of difference, not just in terms of lesser rates, but also in terms of compliance,' the finance minister said. Sitharaman said industry has been widely consulted before and after the signing of trade agreements and is well-positioned to benefit from them or compete with imports. On new bank licences, the FM said she understood the RBI's approach. 'The only thing on which, if at all, I would want to say is whatever be the decision of the regulator, give licence, approve or deny licence and say no, it cannot happen. It should happen in a reasonable time,' she said. The ongoing Operation Sindoor doesn't pose a fiscal challenge, she said. Of course, they are (private investment) coming in. Bengal alleges Odisha detained nearly 100 of its migrants as Bangladeshis
Amid Odisha's crackdown on 'illegal immigrants' in the state since May, fresh discord bubbled up with its neighbouring state after the West Bengal government alleged that nearly 100 migrant workers from the state have been allegedly detained and 'sent to detention centres' on suspicion of being Bangladeshis. According to TMC Rajya Sabha MP and chairman of the state's Migrant Welfare Board Samirul Islam, 'top administrative officials and police officers, under the instructions of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, have reached out to their counterparts in Odisha' regarding the issue. 'But they are not releasing the poor migrant workers,' Samirul Islam said. 'What has happened is unconstitutional'. 'They are Indian citizens and residents of Bengal. They have gone to Odisha for work. But they have been detained and labelled Bangladeshis. They have been sent to the detention centre,' he said. 'We will bring them home'. Targeting the CM Mohan Majhi-led Odisha government, Samirul Islam said, 'In state after state, under BJP rule, this is happening.' The development in Odisha comes after seven persons, including four youths and a couple, from West Bengal, who had been picked up by the Maharashtra Police and pushed into Bangladesh, were brought back last week following the intervention of the TMC government in West Bengal. According to government sources, Bengal administration officials and the police are in touch with their Odisha counterparts and have furnished residential documents of those detained and pressed for their immediate release and return. Contacted regarding the developments, a senior Odisha government official told The Indian Express that verifications are being done as part of a nationwide exercise in view of the recent developments in the neighbourhood. 'No one is being detained at any police station. We are just verifying their identities and are also in touch with the West Bengal government,' the official said.
