Mediterranean Diet Could Protect Against a Common Form of Liver Disease
MASLD affects around one in three of us worldwide, and occurs when too much fat builds up in the liver. It can lead to inflammation, cancer, and fibrosis, and is closely linked to other issues such as type 2 diabetes and obesity.
The new review study, led by a team from the University of Rovira i Virgili in Spain, looked at 13 previous trials and studies involving 926 participants and a variety of diet approaches. Each of the reviewed trials involved people with MASLD.
It was the Mediterranean diet that stood out in terms of its health benefits, with intermittent fasting also making a notable difference in terms of numerous key health markers. Several signs of MASLD in the liver were reduced by these diets.
"This review suggests that Mediterranean diet and intermittent fasting-based strategies may reduce body weight, improve glycemic control, and lower inflammation, with potential benefits for hepatic [liver] function," write the researchers in their published paper.
"Further long-term studies are needed to confirm these effects and underlying mechanisms, which will allow for the optimization of protocols and ensure their safety in MASLD."
It's important to note that while all the reviewed studies involved people with MASLD, the disease wasn't their primary focus. The researchers here are doing some joining of the dots when it comes to how certain biomarkers (such as glycemic control and inflammation levels) might link to MASLD outcomes.
In theory, the benefits that the research shows for the Mediterranean diet and intermittent fasting should reduce the severity of MASLD, or stop it from developing in the first place. But as the researchers acknowledge, we'll need longer-term studies looking at disease progression over time to be more sure.
"Despite the limited data on liver function outcomes, the results of this review provided early indication of the promising potential of Mediterranean diet-based interventions," write the researchers.
The Mediterranean diet emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, olive oil, fish, and poultry, while minimizing sugar, red meat, and processed foods. Its name comes from its region of origin, particularly countries like Greece and Italy.
It's an approach to eating that's been around for thousands of years, and which has previously been linked to reduced severity of fatty liver disease – though it's important not to assume direct cause and effect, with so many variables involved.
What's clear is that the Mediterranean diet is very good for us, and can keep our bodies functioning in a healthier way for a longer period of time. Scientists are still exploring how exactly it works, but it seems the effects extend to conditions in the liver too.
"MASLD is a complex condition with many factors implicated in its risk/development, including nutrition and immune-metabolic health status," write the researchers.
"Consequently, investigating the influence and effectiveness of dietary patterns in improving hepatic function, along with immuno-metabolism, can be important in MASLD management."
The research has been published in Nutrients.

Tritax Big Box's dividend growth policy isn't quite as impressive as that of its FTSE 250 counterpart. One reason is that it's only been in existence since 2013. Another reason is that the annual dividend fell for the first time during the height of the pandemic five years ago. But this REIT has grown shareholder payouts steadily since then, and is tipped to continue through to 2027 at least. In fact, predicted dividend growth for this year is more than double the rate predicted for the broader UK share complex. Tritax Big Box doesn't operate in defensive sectors, which can leave profits vulnerable during lean periods. But its portfolio composition helps to reduce (if not totally eliminate) the threat to dividends and its share price. It has more than 128 tenants on its books spread across 102 properties. These cover multiple industries and include blue-chip companies like Amazon and Ocado, providing strength through diversification. With online shopping still growing, supply chains being onshored, and data centre demand increasing, I expect demand for its big box assets to rise over time. Study Finds Simple Change Can Help Manage Blood Sugar
Getting up from the dining table with haste may be the key to managing one's blood sugar, a new study finds. People often experience glucose spikes after eating, particularly when consuming foods high in carbohydrates such as bread, pasta, rice and grains. It's become a known health hack that going on a post-meal walk can help curb sugary spikes caused by such foods. But a study published on Scientific Reports on Wednesday took things even further. The researchers looked into the intricacies of the post-meal walk, particularly with how immediate one has to start walking to receive the most health benefits. The study analyzed a group of 12 people to compare the difference between going on a 10-minute walk right after glucose intake and going on a 30-minute walk a half hour after glucose intake. The findings showed that both methods significantly reduced average blood glucose levels compared to remaining at rest after a meal. However, the 10-minute walk was deemed to be "uniquely effective" at minimizing the peak glucose levels for each individual compared to the delayed 30-minute walk. Participants also rated the 10-minute walk as "significantly easier" than the longer one despite having to start the former with a fuller stomach. It doesn't take a scientist to figure out that last part. Getting a walk in earlier can yield even better results in terms of blood sugar maintenance than putting off a stroll just a little longer. The study suggests that not even tripling the walk duration would give you the same level of benefit. Bobby Jenks, former White Sox closer and World Series champion, dies at 44
Bobby Jenks pitched six of his seven MLB seasons with the Chicago White Sox, helping the franchise win the 2005 World Series. (Photo by) Former Chicago White Sox closer Bobby Jenks died Friday after a battle with Stage 4 adenocarcinoma, a form of stomach cancer. Jenks was 44 years old. The two-time All-Star and 2005 World Series champion revealed his condition during a February 2025 interview with from a hospital bed in Portugal, where he moved to be closer to his wife's family. Jenks spent six of his seven MLB seasons with the White Sox. He posted back-to-back 40-save seasons in 2006 and 2007 and compiled 86 saves over his final three seasons in Chicago, but is most famous on the South Side for closing out the Fall Classic in 2005, with a future pope in attendance for Game 1. Advertisement During the 2007 season, Jenks retired 47 consecutive batters. He spent the 2011 season, his last in MLB, with the Boston Red Sox. In May 2021, Jenks began working as the pitching coach for the minor-league Grand Junction Rockies. The next season, he was promoted to manager and won the league's Manager of the Year award after helping the team win a championship. Jenks spent the 2023 season as the Princeton WhistlePigs' pitching coach before he returned to managing with the Windy City ThunderBolts later that year. A father of six, Jenks and his wife, Eleni, moved to Portugal in October 2024. Not long after they relocated, he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right calf and later dealt with multiple blood clots in his lungs. Early in 2025, he noticed that his energy level was decreasing, and after testing at a local hospital, it was discovered that a tumor had formed in his chest. Advertisement Jenks told that the tumor spread into his stomach lining, his bones, his lower back and his hips. As Jenks was dealing with his health battle, his family was affected by the Palisades fire, which caused them to lose their home and personal belongings, except for his 2005 World Series ring. 'I've got one suitcase left to my name,' Jenks said. 'It's all gone. Everything else I've ever done. I have everything, first to first. All those things are irreplaceable.'
