In a wide-ranging conversation, Mohan Savarkar, Chief Product Officer at Tata Motors, laid out the brand's evolving strategy across powertrain technologies, product development, and future-readiness, highlighting Tata's multi-pronged approach to mobility in India.
CNG, Diesel & Flex-Fuel: A Balancing Act
CNG continues to play a strong role in Tata's strategy, especially with models like Punch and Nexon already offering factory-fitted kits. While Savarkar acknowledged that the mid-size SUV segment has seen some CNG traction, he said Tata will wait for clearer consumer demand in the larger SUV category before investing further.
On diesel, despite its negative public image, Savarkar maintained that the fuel still has relevance, especially in larger SUVs. "BS7 norms won't make diesel unviable," he said, adding that tailpipe emissions for gasoline and diesel would essentially converge.
Tata is also preparing for a flex-fuel future. "Ethanol is an excellent solution for carbon dioxide emissions," Savarkar explained, citing its circular nature. However, he admitted the challenge lies in balancing lower fuel efficiency with pricing parity to make flex-fuel viable for consumers.
Electrification Vs Hybridisation
While many competitors are hedging their bets with hybrids, Tata remains committed to EVs. "We believe EV is the most efficient way to reach net zero. There's no in-between," Savarkar said firmly. This aligns with Tata's growing EV portfolio and its refusal to follow hybrid trends despite recent policy softening.
Savarkar indicated that Tata's multi-powertrain strategy allows it to hedge across ICE, CNG, diesel, and EV, offering flexibility amid regulatory uncertainty and shifting consumer sentiment.
And while officially it hasn't embraced hybrids yet, industry murmurs suggest that Tata may be quietly developing a strong hybrid powertrain as a hedge, just in case.
Engineering Excellence: Curvv's New Turbo-Petrol Engine
A key highlight of the discussion was the new 1.2L turbo-petrol engine introduced with the Tata Curvv. Savarkar detailed a host of innovations: a 350-bar injection system, sodium-cooled exhaust valves, machine-learning-based launch assist, and torque boost functions.
"The tech in this engine is not just for the sake of features; it's integrated to deliver performance and lower emissions," he said. He also dismissed concerns that added complexity could mean reliability issues, insisting that predictive AI and thoughtful engineering have ensured a smooth ownership experience.
On Variants, Safety & Connected Tech
Tata Curvv currently offers more than 40 variants - a result of the brand's strategy to cater to every buyer across multiple powertrains. While this creates supply chain complexity, Savarkar said the line-up is regularly pruned based on customer demand.
Safety remains a cornerstone of Tata's product identity, with several models earning 5-star ratings. Savarkar stressed Tata's holistic approach, encompassing crash avoidance tech, structural integrity, and post-crash safety.
As for connected car tech, adoption varies, but Tata sees rising demand. "Consumers are increasingly integrating their digital lifestyles into their cars," Savarkar noted, affirming that connectivity will continue to expand across the portfolio.
What's Next?
Looking ahead, Tata expects SUVs to continue their dominance, while hatchbacks and sedans may see further decline. On new technologies like ADAS and future emissions regulations (CAFE, BS7), Savarkar said Tata is fully engaged with policymakers and prepared to adapt quickly.

Tata Motors , Mahindra & Mahindra , JSW MG Motor India and Toyota Kirloskar Motor have come out against market leader Maruti Suzuki 's proposal to ease fuel efficiency norms for small cars in the upcoming third edition of Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE 3) standards. CAFE 3 regulatory norms aimed at reducing fuel consumption and vehicular emissions are set to come into effect from April 2027. The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has asked stakeholders to submit their views on enacting differentiated CAFE norms based on vehicle size post the last round of consultations held on June 17. Now, four major carmakers have written to industry body Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam) opposing Maruti Suzuki's call to ease fuel efficiency norms for small cars (weighing less than 1,000 kg) to stem a steep fall in sales of entry level cars in the last few years. The top carmaker argues that high prices due to stringent norms have made small cars unaffordable for entry-level buyers. Its rivals, however, attribute the decline in small car sales to a marked shift in consumer preferences. Emailed queries sent to Tata Motors, M&M, JSW MG Motor and Toyota Kirloskar did not elicit any response till press time Wednesday. "The legacy CAFE regulation penalises light-weight cars and allows higher weight cars to emit much more CO2, which is counter-intuitive," said Rahul Bharti, senior executive officer, corporate affairs, Maruti Suzuki. "There are many models that have high absolute CO2 emissions but meet the CAFE target, while there are many models with lower absolute CO2 emissions that are unable to meet the target." Small cars don't have a separate standard under the existing CAFE 2 norms that are in force through March 2027. As per the existing rules, the average emissions of all passenger vehicles weighing less than 3,500 kg - including CNG, hybrids and electric vehicles - sold by each manufacturer should not be more than 113 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre. This means that some models can have higher emissions if the manufacturer has fuel-efficient vehicles in its portfolio. A car's CO2 emissions are directly proportional to the amount of fuel it consumes. "Even large, developed nations with spacious roads and high per capita income," including the US, China, Japan, Korea, and the EU, are protecting small cars under their CAFE regulations, Bharti said. "Given the congestion in India and the per capita incomes in India, our need to protect small cars should naturally be higher." He said all car manufacturers will discuss this topic within SIAM. "I am sure the government and the industry will converge to a solution that is good for the country, society and industry," the Maruti executive added. Companies opposing the proposal to have differentiated norms for small cars under CAFE 3 cite derailment from the consensus on standards arrived at by the industry in December 2024. If implemented, it could disrupt business plans amid an increased consumer preference for bigger vehicles in the local market, they argued. "Going back on that and pursuing a separate line of thought now is not acceptable," a senior industry executive said on condition of anonymity. "There are choices available in the small car segment in the market today, but buyers want bigger vehicles with more technology and value proposition, not less." Another industry executive said, if at all, the government should ease norms for small electric cars and not smaller internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. "One should look to develop small EVs, not small ICE," he said. "Small cars will still have emissions. If we really want to resolve the issue of vehicular pollution, we should promote zero emission ones." Sales of small cars (priced up to '5 lakh) in India have fallen 35% per year (at a compounded annual rate) between 2016-17 and 2024-25, industry data accessed by ET showed. Sales of vehicles priced '5-10 lakh, '10-15 lakh and '15-20 lakh increased by 4%, 20% and 29% CAGR, respectively, during this period.

New Delhi: India's leading truck and bus makers including Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra are urging the government to exempt small commercial vehicles with maximum weight not exceeding 3.5 tonne from the stricter Corporate Average Fuel Efficiency (CAFE) norms, flagging affordability issues, similar to those cited for easing emission norms for small cars under the proposed CAFE 3 norms. "Mandating CAFE norms for this segment (N1 - SCV less than 3.5T) at this point of time would impose additional cost burdens, affect affordability and adversely impact the livelihood of owner-operators and small businesses," the companies said in a presentation to the government. "In view of this, we reiterate the request to exempt NI category from CAFE regulations at this stage." A copy of the presentation has been reviewed by ET. The CV makers emphasised that about 80% of small CV owners are driver-operators, reliant on the vehicle for livelihood. Purchasing a new vehicle in India requires more than 40 months of income, compared to 9-10 months in Europe, indicating a severe affordability gap. Also, curbs on operating these vehicles in urban areas like time-of-day limits reduce asset utilization and the return on investment (ROI), they said, requesting the relaxation. The CV industry's stance regarding CAFE norms comes at a time when some carmakers have raised concerns about Maruti Suzuki 's proposal to the Centre seeking easier fuel efficiency norms for small cars. The CV makers further said post the exemption to small commercial vehicles from CAFE norms to enable data-driven policy evolution, the industry will be annually reporting to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) on a manufacturer-wise basis N1 vehicle sales, including fuel-wise share and fleet average CO2 emissions for N1.
