JPJ to audit 500 bus and lorry operators from June 23 in special ops
JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the operation was ordered by Transport Minister Anthony Loke to investigate operators to ensure compliance with the audit process stipulated under the Land Public Transport Act.
He said the main focus of the operation is to assess the company's compliance level with safety aspects, vehicle maintenance, driver management and compliance records under the Road Transport Act 1987 and related regulations.
"It involves the implementation of safety inspection and audit reports that focus on compliance with the industrial code of practice regarding safety in the transportation industry.
"Additionally, there will be the review and resolution of outstanding issues for vehicle owners and drivers, as well as compliance with the vehicle technical plan," he said at a press conference after officiating the Penang-level MyLesen B2 Driving Licence Programme 2025 presentation ceremony here on Friday (June 20).
Aedy Fadly emphasised that the action was taken following the recent frequent accidents involving heavy vehicles, including the bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on June 9.
Commenting further, he said his team had also identified the list of involved companies obtained from Apad and JPJ list through a review of outstanding summonses.
"Based on statistics, the JPJ has identified a category of high-risk operators, which includes 300 lorries, 100 tour buses and 100 express buses," he said.
He added that strict action would be taken against any operator found to be violating regulations or neglecting safety aspects, including issuing notices of violation, suspension, or cancellation of vocational driving licenses or company operator licences. – Bernama

RM50,000 up for grabs: Penang group seeks tip-offs on animal cruelty cases
GEORGE TOWN, July 12 — The Penang chapter of animal rights group International Aid for the Protection and Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) is offering a RM50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those involved in recent abuse cases targeting strays and wildlife on the island. The group said the reward applies specifically to verified tip-offs involving incidents of poisoning, killing, maiming or any form of cruelty involving stray cats, dogs or wild animals within the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) jurisdiction. This follows recent disturbing reports of animals, particularly strays, being harmed on Penang Hill, prompting outrage from animal lovers and activists. 'This reward is offered to show that many in our society do not tolerate acts of cruelty towards animals,' IAPWA Penang said in a statement posted to Facebook yesterday. The organisation said it is acting with the backing of 'reliable and compassionate individuals who stand firmly against cruelty', adding that the RM50,000 sum marks an increase from an earlier amount. According to the Penang Hill Corporation, the animals were believed to have been poisoned.— Picture via Facebook/Penang Hill The group stressed that only direct and verifiable information will qualify for the reward, adding that social media reposts or unsubstantiated claims will not be accepted. 'Whether the abuse occurred recently including cases at Penang Hill or in the past, we want to hear from you,' IAPWA Penang said. 'Your information could save lives,' the group added. 'Help us bring justice to the voiceless.' Reports will be handled confidentially and there is no deadline for submission. To report any animal abuse, members of the public can call the MBPP hotline at 04-263 7000 / 04-263 7637 or WhatsApp 016-200 4082. Alternatively, tip-offs may also be sent to IAPWA Penang via email at [email protected] or WhatsApp at 010-388 3487. Lorry driver killed in predawn crash on NSE
MUAR: A 46-year-old lorry driver was killed in a predawn crash involving two heavy vehicles at Km144 of the North-South Expressway (southbound) early this morning. Initial police findings suggest the lorry had abruptly switched from the left to the right lane, leading a Hino lorry travelling in the same direction from Penang to Johor Baru to crash into its rear. District police chief Assistant Commissioner Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the Hino lorry driver, 42, attempted to brake but collided with the rear right corner of the Nissan, causing it to veer off to the left side of the highway. "The Nissan driver sustained serious internal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Hino driver and his 42-year-old passenger escaped unhurt," he said in a statement today. The case is investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. He urged witnesses to contact investigation officer Inspector Khairun Izham Noor Yusry at 013-9121508 or visit the Muar district traffic police station to assist in the probe.

Dangerous driving leads to express bus crash in Sabah, injuring five people
KOTA KINABALU: A dangerous overtaking manoeuvre by an express bus driver led to a multi-vehicle collision that left five people, including the driver himself, injured along KM15 of Jalan Ranau-Tamparuli late Friday (July 11) night. The incident occurred around 10pm when the bus, carrying 22 passengers along with a conductor, was en route to Semporna from here. Ranau OCPD Supt Mursalin Mahmud said the 65-year-old driver was believed to be speeding when he attempted to overtake on a double line and sideswiped a car driven by a 30-year-old man. The bus then slammed into the rear of another vehicle driven by a 51-year-old man, which was pushed forward into a trailer in front. 'Five people were injured, comprising the bus driver, three passengers onboard the bus, and one of the drivers from other vehicles. All were taken to Ranau Hospital for treatment,' Mursalin said. Two other drivers, of a small compact car and a trailer, were unharmed. Blood and urine samples were taken from the bus driver to check for alcohol or drug use. Police also found he had three unpaid traffic summonses. The case is being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving causing an accident. Fire and Rescue personnel from Ranau responded to the scene to assist with rescue operations. Dashcam footage of the incident, including clips of the bus entering the wrong lane and narrowly avoiding oncoming traffic near the Kundasang Roundabout, has gone viral on social media.
