JPJ to audit 500 bus and lorry operators from June 23 in special ops
BUTTERWORTH: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will audit 500 operators of public service vehicles (PSV) and high-risk goods commercial vehicles (GCV) through the nationwide JPJ Inspection and Safety Audit special operation, starting Monday (June 23). JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, said the operation was ordered by Transport Minister Anthony Loke to investigate operators to ensure compliance with the audit process stipulated under the Land Public Transport Act. He said the main focus of the operation is to assess the company's compliance level with safety aspects, vehicle maintenance, driver management and compliance records under the Road Transport Act 1987 and related regulations. "It involves the implementation of safety inspection and audit reports that focus on compliance with the industrial code of practice regarding safety in the transportation industry. "Additionally, there will be the review and resolution of outstanding issues for vehicle owners and drivers, as well as compliance with the vehicle technical plan," he said at a press conference after officiating the Penang-level MyLesen B2 Driving Licence Programme 2025 presentation ceremony here on Friday (June 20). Aedy Fadly emphasised that the action was taken following the recent frequent accidents involving heavy vehicles, including the bus crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students on June 9. Commenting further, he said his team had also identified the list of involved companies obtained from Apad and JPJ list through a review of outstanding summonses. "Based on statistics, the JPJ has identified a category of high-risk operators, which includes 300 lorries, 100 tour buses and 100 express buses," he said. He added that strict action would be taken against any operator found to be violating regulations or neglecting safety aspects, including issuing notices of violation, suspension, or cancellation of vocational driving licenses or company operator licences. – Bernama

Negeri Sembilan JPJ issues over 3,000 notices during Op HRAA 2025
SEREMBAN: The Negeri Sembilan Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued a total of 3,044 notices for various offences during the Hari Raya Aidiladha Special Operation (Op Khas HRAA) 2025, which was conducted from June 4 to 10. Its director, Hanif Yusabra Yusuf, said that through the operation, a total of 8,437 vehicles were inspected and action was taken against 1,342 vehicles. He said that 2,191 JPJ (P) 22 notices were issued, followed by 333 investigation notices under Section 114 of the Road Transport Act 1987; 216 inspection orders under Section 61(1); 160 vehicle prohibition notices; 45 weighing orders under Section 82(1) of the Land Public Transport Act (APAD) 2010; 92 other notices; and seven APAD notices. 'For offences based on categories, a total of 973 offences involving vehicle licensing were recorded, followed by driver licensing (680), technical issues (625), major offences (371), other offences (269) and goods offences (125),' he said in a statement here today. According to him, among the main offences detected were failure to obey traffic lights with 121 cases, not wearing seat belts (83), driving heavy vehicles in the fast lane (60), driving in the emergency lane (32), not wearing helmets (27), queue-jumping (23), using mobile phones (19), and overtaking on double lines (six). He added that 75 vehicles were seized while 97 notices were issued to foreign drivers for various offences.

Azalina calls for new law to hold companies accountable
KUALA LUMPUR: The government should consider introducing a new law to hold companies liable for serious safety failures that result in loss of life, according to Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. She cited the United Kingdom's Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007 as a possible model for Malaysia, noting that it was introduced following a series of fatal workplace incidents where corporations escaped criminal liability. 'The UK introduced this law in response to several fatal workplace incidents where no corporation could be held accountable, particularly in the transport sector, despite the fact that such negligence cost human lives which are invaluable,' she said in a Facebook post. Azalina also backed Transport Minister Anthony Loke's call for firm action following Monday's tragic bus crash in Gerik that claimed the lives of 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). She urged the government to review the effectiveness of current enforcement measures and consider amendments to the Penal Code to strengthen accountability for corporate negligence. Yesterday, Loke said the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) had issued a show-cause letter to the bus operator involved in the crash at KM53 of the East-West Highway near Tasik Banding, Gerik. He said the Road Transport Department (JPJ) is also conducting safety audits and inspections of the company and the bus involved, under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the Land Public Transport Act. 'Firm action will be taken once investigations are complete. Every life lost is not only a tragedy for the family, but a loss for the nation's future,' Loke said in his own Facebook statement.
