A San Antonio poem for National Poetry Month

Axios01-05-2025
To close out National Poetry Month, we're sharing an excerpt from " A Love Letter to San Antonio: San Antonio, You Know," written by San Antonio Poet Laureate Eduardo "Eddie" Vega.
Catch up quick: Vega wrote the poem for Centro San Antonio earlier this month.
"Let's two-step to our hearts' desires, chancla dance to our souls' content.
Wear that guayabera with Penner's pride and dale shine and go to the Alameda, mark time at Market Square. Make it a year-round Fiesta con mariachis and marching bands and floats that have to actually float.
So kiss me in downtown Christmas lights, hug me with your Wembanyama arms, sing to me in George Strait melodies and dance cumbias to Flaco's accordion.
San Antonio, I love you. Be my barbacoa, and I will be your Big Red because we're a match made in heaven, a match made here, a match to light up Civic Park on a New Year's Eve countdown."

Netflix just got a must-watch crime comedy from the Oscar-winning director of ‘Anora' — and it's 96% on Rotten Tomatoes

Sean Baker was the toast of Tinseltown earlier this year when his phenomenal comedy-drama 'Anora' scooped five Oscars, including the Academy's biggest prizes, Best Picture and Best Director. But the Mikey Madison star-making movie was far from Baker's first time creating a darkly funny flick that critics and viewers adored. 2015 saw the release of 'Tangerine,' a bitingly sharp crime comedy that sees a sex worker set out on a quest to even the score after learning that her boyfriend (who also happens to be her pimp) was unfaithful to her while she was locked-up in jail for a month. Filmed on three iPhone 5S phones — at a time when the idea of filming even an indie movie on a smartphone was considered pretty novel, let alone an S model — 'Tangerine' is a brilliant underdog story, and it's just arrived on Netflix as part of the service's July slate. If you enjoyed 'Anora,' then it makes for the perfect follow-up, and if you don't want to take my word for it, its critical reception should convince you to add it to your Netflix watchlist. Transgender sex worker Sin-Dee Rella (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) has just got out of jail after serving a 28-day sentence. Meeting up with her friend, and fellow sex worker, Alexandra (Mya Taylor), she is shocked to learn her boyfriend, Chester (James Ransone), has been cheating on her while she was incarcerated. Setting out into the hazy heat of Hollywood on a warm Christmas Eve evening, Sin-Dee vows to find Chester and get to the bottom of the situation. What follows is an odyssey through Los Angeles, exploring a side of the city that is ever present but often hidden. Much like 'Anora,' 'Tangerine" was a real critical darling. The 2015 movie holds a very impressive 96% score on review aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, and this rating comes from almost 170 reviews, so it's not a small sample size. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. In fact, 'Tangerine's' RT score is higher than 'Anora's,' though the latter currently holds a strong 93% rating, so we're talking about two great movies. Writing for the Observer, legendary U.K. film critic Mark Kermode said, 'Fired by zesty performances that crackle and burn with energy, 'Tangerine' is a bittersweet affair underpinned by a winning sense of empathy and affection.' Jake Wilson of the Sydney Morning Herald described it as 'raucously entertaining.' 'The chemistry of the leads and their authentic, crackling dialogue make it a pleasure to tag along for the day,' said Rebecca Keegan of the Los Angeles Times. Meanwhile, Matt Zoller Seitz labeled the Sean Baker movie 'assured and immensely likable.' David Lewis of the San Francisco Chronicle was similarly impressed. 'This is sublime filmmaking, a textbook example of how indies can tell groundbreaking stories in a way that Hollywood simply can't match,' wrote Lewis in an extremely positive review. Plenty of critics also praised 'Tangerine' for its (at the time) innovative style due to being shot on an iPhone 5S. This gives the movie a gritty and guerrilla look, and makes you, as a viewer, feel like you're alongside Sin-Dee and Alexandra for a wild ride through L.A. If you enjoyed Sean Baker's work in 'Anora,' then you don't want to skip 'Tangerine.' It's a little rougher around the edges, at least from a stylistic point of view, but it's no less bursting with snappy dialogue and thoughtful commentary on the world around. And it's far from the only worthwhile new addition to the streaming service this month. Check out our guide to everything new on Netflix in July 2025 for even more viewing recommendations, including must-watch movies and seriously bingeable TV shows. Watch "Tangerine" on Netflix now

Husband slammed for asking this question at a kids birthday party: ‘I'm filled with rage'

Talk about being oblivious. Like many mothers, a Connecticut woman wanted nothing more than for her little girl's Cinderella-themed birthday party to be memorable and special. In order to do this, Courtney Davis spent countless weeks planning the princess party of her 4-year-old's dreams. She placed orders for things like custom-embroidered napkins, and she carefully lined table covers with lace trim. Talk about being detail-oriented. Davis — who is a mom of two — didn't just cater to her little girl. She made sure to put out a delicious spread of food and drinks for the adults. This mom worked hard for weeks to make her little girl's birthday party special. Monkey Business – Although most young tots don't notice these things, Davis told she goes above and beyond because 'It's my anxiety.' The key thing to note is that her hubby seemed to be barely involved in the planning of their daughter's birthday party. It wasn't until the actual day of the party — when everything was in its place, ready for guests and the birthday girl to arrive — that he asked if his hardworking wife needed help with anything. He also had the nerve to ask Davis: 'Did you get a cake?' Davis went above and beyond for the party — catering to not only her little girl, but adults as well. Oksana Kuzmina – Clearly, this man doesn't know his wife very well, or his head was in the clouds, not noticing all the behind-the-scenes work Davis did leading up to the party. The real kicker is that Davis innocently caught her husband's naive questions on camera when she was bringing her phone around the party to capture the final product she worked so hard on. She posted this humorous — maybe a little exasperating — video to Instagram with the caption, 'Thanks so much for asking,' and the floodgates opened with wives running to the comment section to share how their husbands are also oblivious at times or joke that they want to stay single forever. 'Reminds me of Christmas morning. Did you get presents for the kids lol.' 'Put all the husbands in a bag, shake it up, reach inside….. you'll get yours every time, cause they all the same.' 'I was scrolling Instagram to relax, but now I'm filled with rage thank you very much lol.' 'I was going to start dating again but never mind.' 'Single women are the happiest.' This isn't the first time moms are calling out men. A fed-up mom went viral for sharing why many women have low sex drives. 'Not an f—ing chance,' she said, after going through a calculation that consisted of eight hours of sleep, three full meals, helpful husband duties — and one too many toddler touches. 'We gotta find a way to add in how long the husband takes to poop,' joked one person in the comment section. 'Women in stem,' someone else wrote.

Tony Parker house details: Kai Cenat stream reveals $16.5M mansion complete with Nando's restaurant

The Spurs' dynasty didn't come with bells and whistles. Gregg Popovich valued players with simple off-the-court lives and a high work ethic who were willing to work as a team. Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker embodied those values, as did Kawhi Leonard when he joined the fray. Advertisement As it turns out, Parker isn't exactly living the simple life in his post-playing career. A live stream appearance with Kai Cenat revealed Parker is living the dream in a massive mansion, which includes his own restaurant. Cenat and other popular streamers are spending their "30 Days of Summer" marathon in Parker's house, creating an odd mashup throughout July. Here's what you need to know about Parker's house and where it's located. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Where does Tony Parker live? Parker's mansion is located in Boerne, Texas, a San Antonio suburb just north of the city. In 2018, Parker actually personalized the address of the home, renaming it to 9 Rue Parker in a tribute to his jersey number. "Rue" translates to "street" in French. Advertisement The former Spurs guard has made a home in the San Antonio area despite hailing from France, and who can blame him with the mansion he has? The city has shown its love for Parker over the years, and he has shown plenty back to the community. As of 2020, the population of Boerne is just under 18,000. Here are the details on Parker's house and its amenities. MORE:Does Kai Cenat play basketball? Tony Parker house details Parker's house is loaded with amenities, to no surprise. The mansion features a private water park, including lazy rivers, and it has 10 bedrooms, eight bathrooms and four additional partial bathrooms. The property spans 53 acres. Advertisement The house includes a nearly 6,000-square foot gym, a tennis court, an outdoor volleyball court and, of course, a basketball court. All of that working out would make someone hungry. What wasn't well-known before Cenat started streaming in the house is that Parker has a 24-hour Nando's PERi-PERi chicken restaurant. The live stream showed a massive Nando's logo, bar seating and an employee behind the bar. The mansion also features a wine room that can fit up to 1,500 bottles. Here's what a prospective buyer wouldn't get: the "champion room," which features Parker's jerseys, trophies and NBA championship rings. Well, you would get the room — just don't expect Parker's prized possessions to come with it. Advertisement The exact value is the house isn't clear. Parker listed it for $16.5 million in 2024 but has since taken it off the market. It was also listed for $19.5 million in 2021. Whether the mansion would fetch $16.5 million at this point is unknown, but all of the amenities Parker has at his disposal wouldn't come cheap. MORE:Inside newest Spurs standout Dylan Harper's family tree What is Nando's restaurant? Nando's is a fast-food chicken chain that specializes in Portuguese-style peri-peri chicken. The chain started in South Africa and has more than 1,200 restaurants in operation across the world. Advertisement Nando's is fairly new to the United States. The first restaurant opened in Washington D.C. in 2008, and there are still only 46 locations in the U.S. — or 47, if you count Parker's private restaurant. With only four public Nando's restaurants in Texas, anyone looking for some PERi-PERi chicken might find that their closest location is actually right in the middle of a former NBA champion's mansion. MORE:Ranking the 16 biggest busts in NBA Draft history Tony Parker career earnings and net worth Parker made $165.8 million in NBA contracts over the course of an 18-year career that included four championships. His largest contract was signed in 2004, when he agreed to a six-year, $66 million extension with the Spurs. Parker ultimately spent 17 of his 18 seasons in San Antonio, so it's no surprise he's chosen to stay in the area long-term even after his playing career. Advertisement Parker's net worth is an estimated $85 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Some of that money went toward his Boerne mansion, which undoubtedly requires constant upkeep between the waterpark, gym and Nando's. MORE:Every Game 7 in NBA Finals history
