Comeback win gives Germany game plan for semi-final with Spain
The Germans had a player sent off and conceded a penalty early on against the French, but recovered to draw 1-1 after extra time and win the quarter-final shootout, pitting the eight-times champions against Spain on Wednesday.
"Really, it's the perfect example for passion, strength, mental strength, all these things that are characteristics that we possess," Knaak told a press conference.
"Of course, on a tactical basis, we are prepared by the coach and the team, but the basic, fundamental characteristic has been built for the Spanish (game) in the French match."
After two first-half red cards in their last two games, coach Christian Wueck is hoping to keep 11 players on the pitch for as long as possible so he can make the most of his attacking talent.
"I think we will chase them (Spain) a lot. We won't have a lot of possession, and we will suffer, but we have to find the right moments and take advantage of the right moments to push our game ... we are strong in possession, and this is going to be the big difference, because we want to play on the ball," he told reporters.
The Germans have also been disrupted by injuries during the tournament, but Knaak said the sense of togetherness in the squad lessened the impact of losing players.
"I think it says a lot about the team that we accepted every situation as it came along. There's so many different, unusual situations, and we adapted, we accepted those situations, and we supported each other," she said.
"And at the end, it doesn't really matter who plays next to whom. We are a team, and we have the squad exactly for those reasons, so that we can adapt."

'Every time there's a pre-season (tour here), we do see an uptick in business,' said Mr Ami Chopra, sales director of football at Weston Corp. 'When those jerseys launch, you do see a slight, significant increase. Come closer to the date, people (feel like because their) team's playing, they need to wear something,' he added. 'So usually (because of) impulse buys, (we) will have quite a big spike in sales.' The store will also run pop-up booths offering exclusive gear on match days, with extra staff on hand to meet the expected rise in demand. BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER For Newcastle fan Terence Ong, buying jerseys is a ritual. He has amassed 85 Magpies shirts in his collection since the 1990s, including the Carabao Cup winners' print this year to celebrate the club's first domestic trophy in more than 70 years. The local fan club NUFC-SG has also produced a special tee to mark Newcastle's visit. 'I think the club is realising now that there is an untapped market in Asia,' said Mr Ong, who is a committee member of the fan club. 'I like to think that it shows a trend that they want to engage the Asian fans a lot more,' he added. 'And for us, getting our fellow official supporters clubs down from the other parts of Asia itself represents more than just strengthening our bonds, it also gives all of us a chance to show Newcastle United the power or the strength of the Asian fan base here.' For him and Singapore's 2,000-strong Toon army, football is also about bringing people together. Plans for food drives and football clinics are in the pipeline to use sports to give back to the community. For Arsenal fan Shaiful Rahman, he is looking to connect with fellow supporters from other Asian countries for the game. 'The main excitement for us is when we organise a fan party for all the regional friends who are coming to Singapore,' said the president of the Official Arsenal Singapore Supporters Club. 'It's kind of like a form of appreciation for them taking the trouble to fly here and getting to know each individual supporters club.' He noted that there is also a deeper purpose behind it all, adding: 'It's the networking, getting to know each other, being Singaporean, supporting one another. I think that is the key to it.'

Former Tanjong Pagar footballer charged with punching pair from rival club after match at Jurong East Stadium
SINGAPORE: A former Tanjong Pagar United football player was charged in court on Wednesday (Jul 23) over a punching incident involving two rival players in February, which resulted in his termination from the club. Rizqin Aniq Rahaizad, 20, was given two counts of voluntarily causing hurt after the match at Jurong East Stadium on Feb 10. He allegedly punched a 17-year-old Albirex Niigata defender, who cannot be named under the Children and Young Persons Act, causing bleeding at his mouth and pain in his teeth. He is also accused of punching the face of Ho Matsuoka Evangelista Kenji Austin, better known as Kenji Austin Ho. The Albirex player's jaw swelled up and became numb, according to the charge sheet. Past reports indicated that the incident occurred during post-match handshakes after Tanjong Pagar played Albirex in a Singapore Premier League (SPL) Under-21 game. Rizqin was arrested by the police. At the time, Albirex said Ho was admitted to hospital after being hit in the head and discharged after being examined. Rizqin's contract was terminated by his club. The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) also gave him a 30-month ban and a fine of S$2,000 (US$1,564) for violent conduct.
