With the school summer holidays now upon us, keeping children entertained for six weeks can prove challenging at the best of times – but with living costs continuing to rise, it becomes even more daunting. However, one parent has revealed a brilliant "hack" which she claims could potentially save families hundreds of pounds during days out.
"This is one of the best money saving tips for the summer holidays," declared mum-of-two Amy Samantha in a TikTok video. "As a family of four, sometimes we're looking at £40 for lunch out – so this is what we do for the majority of our days out and it only takes about five minutes to prepare in the morning."

Samantha Ann's clip continued as she opened a tin of hot dogs from her kitchen cupboards whilst demonstrating her technique. The mum then prepared the sausages, which cost just £2.50, at home before placing them – along with their brine - into a flask.
Not forgetting the tomato ketchup and American mustard, Samantha Ann packed them into her rucksack alongside a packet of hot dog rolls.
"It's easy to carry around like this," she explained. "No giant cool box is needed and as you can see, my kids absolutely love them.
"It's a summer holiday winner from Ye Olde Oake [hot dog brand]," she announced as her children could be seen enjoying their meal on a picnic blanket.
One TikTok user, in response to the idea, praised it as: "Genius... I look at the insane prices charged today and just don't understand how people afford it. Growing up we always took packed lunches/picnics with us, it was a real treat to go to a cafe or restaurant. It's ironic that things have turned full circle."
Another person concurred: "Good on you your saving loads. Why give money to use expensive places when you have a winner there."
A third added: "This is a fantastic idea thank you for sharing. Hot food in the go."
Whilst a fourth TikTok user simply stated: "Good on you, it's so expensive now for families."
Earlier this month, reports indicated that families, on average, will spend an additional £611 over the holiday period, adding strain to already tight household budgets.

A survey commissioned by Utility Warehouse, involving 1,000 parents with children aged 5 to 14, revealed that costs can escalate even further for those booking clubs and camps, adding another £385 to the bill. Day trips are expected to cost an extra £199, while food and snacks alone could increase expenses by £401.
Steve Long, spokesperson for Utility Warehouse, commented: "With a mix of day trips, summer camps and even an increase in cost for keeping the kids fed, these additions soon add up, but there are some great ways they can save money. Shopping around for bargains and using money saving devices like rewards and cashback cards can be a big help."

EasyJet passengers 'disgusted' at what couple did in full view of everyone on flight
EasyJet passengers 'disgusted' at what couple did in full view of everyone on flight 'I had the perfect view from my aisle seat which is horrifying. I couldn't really take my eyes off even though I wanted to' A traveller was left appalled after witnessing what a couple were up to on a budget airline. (Image: Getty Images) A traveller was left appalled after witnessing what a couple were up to on a budget airline. Erin Butcher was returning home from a week-long family break in Tenerife when she spotted a man 'removing dirt from beneath his partner's toenails' aboard an easyjet flight. Erin initially observed a woman's bare feet resting on a tray table during the journey. The 27-year-old was subsequently left feeling 'revolted' when the man began to scrape at the woman's French manicured toenails before 'flicking fragments of grime' about. You can read more about a woman who slammed easyJet after being hit with 'unfair' £96 charge at the airport here. She alleged the pair continued this behaviour for 20 minutes, whilst fellow passengers chuckled awkwardly in bewilderment. From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here . The fashion merchandiser posted video of the nauseating incident with the caption: "Nothing beats an easyJet flight. Hope no-one ate off this tray table on the next flight." The footage was shared on TikTok on Thursday, July 31, and has subsequently gone viral, accumulating over 336,200 views. Repulsed, Erin described it as 'unsanitary' and claimed it created a 'miserable' conclusion to her break. Erin, from Southwark, South East London, said: "I felt so disgusted and I couldn't believe it. "The partner was sprawled across the seats with her feet on the tray table, which was shocking enough. Her partner then started picking at her toenails and flicking little bits [of dirt] everywhere. It was disgusting." She added: "I was absolutely horrified. I was with my family and none of us could actually believe what was happening. Even to do that in the privacy of your own home is questionable but to put them on a tray table where people are eating off all day. "I was relieved I wasn't sitting next to them. I had the perfect view from my aisle seat which is horrifying. I couldn't really take my eyes off even though I wanted to. Her feet were on that table the majority of the four-and-a-half-hour flight. She was really making herself at home. It's so unhygienic. "Other passengers around us had noticed as well. Everyone was laughing and it was quite unbelievable. As if things aren't depressing enough when your week in the sun has just ended and you're faced with toe picking the whole way home." Numerous users flocked to the comments section to voice their revulsion. One user wrote: "Totally gross." Meanwhile, someone else commented: "That's disgusting anywhere." A third added: "Save it for later." Whilst a fourth user commented: "Why on earth?". EasyJet has been contacted for comment. Content cannot be displayed without consent The incident follows another recent case where a plane passenger criticised a mother for changing her baby's soiled nappy on a tray table instead of using the aircraft toilet. She said on Reddit: "I'm a really nauseous flyer, so I took a Dramamine ahead of time and did my best to get some sleep during the flight. "This didn't happen because of the baby's crying, but oh well, I know flights are scary and stressful for infants and there was nothing anyone could do about that. "What got to me was the couple changing their baby's extremely stinky number two nappy right in the middle of their seats, using the mum's food tray as a changing table. Article continues below "We were at the back of the plane right by the toilets, which I confirmed had baby changing tables when I had to go back there to throw up after the smell hit me." To her relief, the pilot eventually condemned this behaviour - but unfortunately, it was too late to prevent the odour from permeating the cabin. Tourist on holiday in Spanish resort finds empty sunbeds for unexpected reason
A Married at First Sight UK star went on holiday in Palma, Majorca and shared that there were plenty of empty sunbeds at the resort he stayed at for a surprising reason Many Brits like to go away on European beach holidays at this time of year seeking sun and hot weather that we don't get a lot of in the UK in summer. It's not unusual for it to rain and be a bit cold in Britain during this season and there might even be strong winds and storms, like Storm Floris that hit the UK on Monday, August 4. This dreary weather is what prompts Brits to get on a plane and take a flight to holiday destinations in Europe, including Spain, Greece and Italy. Plenty of tourists dream of laying on a sunbed around a pool with the sun beaming down on them and there have been multiple reports of 'sunbed wars' in resorts. However, when Kieran Chapman, known for starring on Married at First Sight in 2024, stayed at a resort in Palma, Majorca he didn't have to wait for a free sunbed at all. He shared a clip on TikTok showing that they were all empty due to the unexpected heavy rain. Despite this, the TV star still lounged on a sunbed and seemed to enjoy the very wet weather as he laid down in a relaxed position with his eyes closed. Palma is the capital city of Majorca, Spain and the largest of the Balearic Islands. It is popular for its beaches, nightlife and climate as it is often sunny and warm in the summer months with little rain so it appears that Kieran got unlucky with the weather. The TikTok video shows that the celebrity, from Newcastle, didn't mind getting soaked by the pouring rainfall. No other guests at the resort can be seen in the clip so Kieran, who is a mechanic, got to enjoy some peace and quiet without letting the British style weather ruin his time. The post has no audio apart from the viral Jet2holidays voiceover meme that has been added to many funny travel videos on TikTok. Kieran's clip has garnered 362,800 views, 16,200 likes and more than 200 comments, at the time of writing. Viewers found humour in the video as one said: 'The rays still get to you through the clouds.' Another added: 'When you're used to English weather.' While a third chimed in: 'That's probably more relaxing than lying in the hot sun.' Someone else commented: 'No towels on the sun beds, get innnn.' A fifth had a similar thought as they remarked: 'At least there's no queues for the chairs.' Others left comments, such as 'this made me laugh', 'making the most of it' and 'I'm actually howling.' The Newcastle mechanic isn't the first holidaymaker to experience this as others have been met with rain in hotspots that are usually sunny and shared similar clips on social media.
