Shooting at a Central African Republic gold mine run by Russia's Wagner leaves 11 dead
The victims were killed Wednesday night at the gold mine in Ndassima, about 450 kilometres (280 miles) east of the country's capital of Bangui, the residents and aid workers told The Associated Press. Residents of nearby villages are forbidden access to the Wagner-controlled mine.
Resident Serge Pounematchi, whose son was among those killed, said the victims were at the site searching for gold residue and gravel when they were summarily killed. He joined other villagers in holding funerals for the victims.
'It is a shame that the right to life does not exist,' Pounematchi said.
Authorities did not yet confirm any details of the violence, and local officials did not immediately respond to inquiries.
Two aid workers, speaking on the condition of anonymity for fear of being targeted, confirmed that the victims were young people from surrounding villages and that most were shot dead.
Constantin Pounoukouzou, a resident of Ndassima, said some villagers are still missing. 'Unemployed young people have no choice but to go to this site at night (for) the gravel,' Pounoukouzou said.
Wagner is often accused of carrying out rights abuses and extrajudicial killings with little or no accountability in Central African Republic, where it has pledged to fight rebel groups and restore peace.
The mercenaries have served as personal bodyguards for Central African President Faustin Archange Touadera, helping him win a 2023 constitutional referendum that could extend his power indefinitely.

ANACONDA, Mont. — A shooting at a Montana bar left four people dead Friday, prompting a lockdown in a neighborhood several miles away as authorities searched for the suspect in a wooded, mountainous area. The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. at The Owl Bar in Anaconda, according to the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, which is leading the investigation. The agency confirmed four people were pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect, identified as 45-year-old military veteran Michael Paul Brown, lived next door, according to public records and bar owner David Gwerder. The bartender and three patrons were killed, said Gwerder, who was not there at the time. He believed the four victims were the only ones present during the shooting, and was not aware of any prior conflicts between them and Brown. 'He knew everybody that was in that bar. I guarantee you that,' Gwerder said. 'He didn't have any running dispute with any of them. I just think he snapped.' Brown's home was cleared by a SWAT team and he was last seen in the Stump Town area, just west of Anaconda, authorities said. More than a dozen officers from local and state police converged on that area, locking it down so no one was allowed in or out. A helicopter also hovered over a nearby mountainside as officers moved among the trees, said Randy Clark, a retired police officer who lives there. Brown was believed to be armed, the Montana Highway Patrol said in a statement. Brown served in the U.S. Army as an armor crewman from 2001 to 2005 and deployed to Iraq from early 2004 until March 2005, according to Lt. Col. Ruth Castro, an Army spokesperson. Brown was in the Montana National Guard from 2006 to March 2009, Castro said. He left military service in the rank of sergeant. As reports of the shooting spread through town, business owners locked their doors and sheltered inside with customers. At Caterpillars to Butterflies Childcare, a nursery a few blocks from the shooting scene, owner Sage Huot said she'd kept the children inside all day after someone called to let her know about the violence. 'We're constantly doing practice drills, fire drills and active shooter drills, so we locked down the facility, locked the doors, and we have a quiet spot where we play activities away from all of our windows and doors,' Huot said. Anaconda is about 75 miles (120 kilometres) southeast of Missoula in a valley hemmed in by mountains. A town of about 9,000 people, it was founded by copper barons who profited off nearby mines in the late 1800s. A smelter stack that's no longer operational looms over the valley. The owner of the Firefly Cafe in Anaconda said she locked up her business at about 11 a.m. Friday after getting alerted to the shooting by a friend. 8 charges laid in shooting death of Langley, B.C., man
Charges have been laid in a fatal shooting nearly one year ago in Langley, B.C., homicide investigators say. The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) says RCMP officers were called to the 7000 block of 202B Street just after midnight on Aug. 2, 2024, following reports of gunfire. Two men suffering from gunshot wounds were later located at a local hospital, police said. One of them died from his injuries. IHIT identified the victim as 41-year-old Dillan Unger of Langley. Investigators said Friday that the B.C. Prosecution Service has charged Stephen Johnson with second-degree murder in connection with Unger's homicide. Johnson was also charged with four counts of attempted murder, one count of aggravated assault, one count of using a firearm in the commission of an offence, and one count of reckless discharge of a firearm in connection with the August 2024 incident. IHIT confirmed that Johnson and Unger knew each other. Johnson remains in custody. "Over the past year, investigators have remained committed to advancing this investigation and securing charges in this case," Cpl. Sukhi Dhesi of IHIT said in a statement.

4 people killed in a shooting at a Montana bar
ANACONDA, Mont. — The ATF says multiple people have been shot at a Montana business, and authorities are searching for a suspect. Officials warned people to avoid the area of Anaconda. The suspect's home was cleared by a SWAT team and the suspect was still at large, the Granite County Sheriff's office said in a social media post. Authorities have yet to release details about what led to the shooting or the conditions of those who were injured. Sandra Barker, a spokesperson for the FBI's Salt Lake City office, which covers Montana, said the FBI is assisting in the response to the shooting but referred questions about it to local authorities.
