Dodgers let strong start from Tyler Glasnow go to waste in loss to Cardinals

The Dodgers' Tyler Glasnow and the Cardinals' Sonny Gray squared off in an old-school pitchers' duel Monday. But both were watching from the clubhouse when pinch-hitter Yohel Pozo's two-out single in the ninth lifted the Cardinals to a 3-2 victory at Dodger Stadium. Glasnow gave the Dodgers seven strong innings for the second time in three starts, allowing a run on three hits — none after the second inning — while striking out seven. Gray was even better in his seven innings, giving up just a fourth-inning solo home run to Freddie Freeman and a second-inning walk to Max Muncy. Both then gave way to shaky bullpens, which is when things got interesting. Read more: 'They've got to perform better.' Three Dodger stars who need to heat up at the plate The Dodgers' bullpen gave up more runs over a span of nine batters than Glasnow did all night. Anthony Banda went first, allowing a go-ahead homer to Iván Herrera three batters into the eighth inning. But the Cardinals' Riley O'Brien gave the run right back in the bottom of the inning on a double to Teoscar Hernández. Newcomer Brock Stewart started the ninth for the Dodgers, but he didn't finish it. After Willson Contreras and Lars Nootbaar greeted him with singles to put runners at the corners, Pozo squirted a two-out single over the infield to score pinch-runner Garrett Hampson for the go-ahead run. After Shohei Ohtani's led off the ninth with a single, the Cardinals' JoJo Romero finally shut the door, getting Mookie Betts to pop out and striking out Freeman. After walking Will Smith to put the tying run at second, he retired Muncy on a line drive to right to end the night. Read more: Dodgers manufacture enough offense to slip past Tampa Bay Rays Glasnow got off to a rough start, allowing three hits, including a solo homer by Masyn Winn, in the first two innings. But he settled in after that, allowing just one baserunner the rest of the way, though he would have nothing to show for it, finishing without a decision for the eighth time in 10 starts. Gray, meanwhile, was dealing from the start for the Cardinals, setting down 10 of the first 11 batters he faced before Freeman tied the game with a one-out home run, his 13th of the season, in the fourth. Freeman has hits in 12 of his last 13 games and is batting .500 over his last six games. But his home run would prove to be the only hit the Dodgers would get off Gray, who struck out eight and walked just one. Sasaki set to throw Right-hander Roki Sasaki is expected to throw the equivalent of three innings to hitters Friday and if that goes well, he could begin a minor-league rehab assignment next week. He has not pitched in nearly three months after going on the IL with a shoulder impingement. Edman goes on injured list Utilityman Hyeseong Kim, out since July 29 with a shoulder issue, is swinging a bat and taking grounders. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts is optimistic he will be able to return soon. But another utility player, Tommy Edman, went on the IL with an ankle injury. With Kim, Edman and Kiké Hernández, another utility player, all out with injuries, Roberts has not had the usual versatility he has enjoyed in fielding a lineup. "Bronny James should've been there" - Dan Patrick criticizes Bronny James for not attending Luka Doncic's press conference

"Bronny James should've been there" - Dan Patrick criticizes Bronny James for not attending Luka Doncic's press conference originally appeared on Basketball Network. LeBron James' absence during Luka Doncic's contract extension press conference raised some eyebrows because a handful of the Lakers were there to throw in their support for Doncic. Veteran podcaster Dan Patrick said that LeBron's on vacation and he face-timed Luka, so given his stature, his absence was excusable. However, while Patrick had no question with LeBron's absence, he was critical about his son Bronny's no-show during an event where most of the Lakers were present. "The one person who I thought should've been there was his son. Bronny James, if he wants to stay longer after LeBron leaves, that's your teammate. That's what was surprising. Bronny James should've been there. You're the last guy on the roster. You should be there," said Patrick. Most players on the Lakers showed up to show support Luka Doncic signed a three-year $165 million contract extension with the Lakers this past weekend, and after he did, eight of his teammates plus head coach JJ Redick posed with him as he held his Lakers No. 77 jersey after his press conference at the UCLA Health Training Center where the Lakers practice. And then, when new team owner Mark Walter flew Luka to Las Vegas afterwards to watch the Backstreet Boys at The Sphere, six of them tagged along and enjoyed the night with their franchise player. Although it was not an official team activity, it was a good opportunity to build chemistry and camaraderie. "It just felt like 'Hey, my dad's LeBron. We got a vacation.' I mean, that's where you say, 'Dad, that's my team. That's my teammate.' I know it's not a big deal, but with LeBron, it's always a big deal. Everything becomes a bigger deal because he was not there. Bronny should've been there. 'Dad, I'm gonna cut short this vacation. I need to be there. I think it's really important.' If that's my son and he said that, I'd be like, 'Alright, son, you're right. You should be there.' But if LeBron face-timed Luka, Luka's fine with that, I don't think there's no acrimony there. But I think it's awkward," Patrick concluded. It's a big deal because he's LeBron's son LeBron face-timing Luka to congratulate him isn't as awkward as Patrick thinks. The guy is on vacation, and that's the best thing he could have done because he's obviously not in Los Angeles. But Bronny being with his dad rather than his teammates is certainly perplexing because, as Dan said, if he wants to remain a Laker when his dad retires, he needs to be one of the guys. To Bronny's credit, however, his draft batchmate Dalton Knecht wasn't there either. Likewise, Austin Reaves was also conspicuously absent, although it was already previously announced that he was going on a four-country, five-city Asian Tour for his shoe sponsor Rigorer from August 2-13, 2025. That sounds excusable, too. But Bronny golfing with his dad? DP doesn't think so. To give LeBon Jr. the benefit of the doubt, let's say that the "James Gang" already planned their vacation in advance. And who would not approve of a wholesome father and son bonding moment like that, where they were playing golf together? However, as a member of a team, Bronny has responsibilities. If players as high-profile as Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart, and Rui Hachimura were there, the same should be expected from a roster filler like story was originally reported by Basketball Network on Aug 4, 2025, where it first appeared.

Yohel Pozo delivers pinch-hit RBI single in 9th inning to send Cardinals past Dodgers, 3-2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pinch-hitter Yohel Pozo delivered a tiebreaking RBI single with two outs in the ninth inning, and the St. Louis Cardinals hung on for a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday night. After Willson Contreras got a leadoff single off new Dodgers reliever Brock Stewart (2-2), pinch-runner Garrett Hampson eventually scored on a soft single to right by Pozo. The Cards' backup catcher celebrated enthusiastically after just his second hit in his last eight games. Sonny Gray yielded one hit over seven stellar innings for the Cards, and two relievers combined on a perilous three-hitter for St. Louis. Riley O'Brien (1-0) earned his first career victory at 30 years old despite blowing a lead in the eighth. JoJo Romero then got his second save despite giving up a leadoff single to Shohei Ohtani, retiring Max Muncy on a line drive to right with two on for the final out. Gray had an entertaining duel with Tyler Glasnow, who gave up three hits in seven innings of one-run ball for Los Angeles. Iván Herrera hit a two-out homer in the eighth for St. Louis, but Teoscar Hernández doubled and scored the tying run on two groundouts in the bottom half for LA. Masyn Winn ended his 32-game homer drought in the Cardinals' third victory in nine games. Freddie Freeman homered for the NL West-leading Dodgers, who fell to 7-9 since the All-Star break with another tepid offensive performance in their return from a mediocre nine-game road trip. Key moment After Ohtani's single, Lars Nootbaar made a spectacular diving catch on Mookie Betts' tailing fly to the right field line. Key stat Glasnow is winless in nine starts since March 31 despite posting a 2.17 ERA since his return last month. He retired 17 of his final 18 batters without a hit. Up next Miles Mikolas (6-8, 4.83 ERA) pitches for St. Louis against Emmet Sheehan (2-2, 3.60 ERA) on Tuesday. ___ AP MLB:
