UMS launches healthy lifestyle campaign to boost student wellness
KOTA KINABALU (April 30): A healthy lifestyle campaign took off on Wednesday at Universiti Malaysia Sabah's Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSSK) to encourage positive health related behaviours among undergraduates.
Over the next six months, students will take part in activities aimed at encouraging them to do moderate exercise for at least 150 minutes per week, take five servings of vegetables and fruits a day, and eat a balanced meal based on the Malaysian Healthy Plate recommendation.
A preliminary study in March revealed that students lack sufficient exercise, and they know the importance of a balanced meal and the need to include vegetables and fruit in their diet, but a majority do not follow these recommendations.
UMS Vice Chancellor Professor Datuk Dr Kasim Mansor who launched the campaign said a healthy lifestyle is important in reducing absenteeism among staff and students, and in keeping productivity levels up.
He commended the Sabah Health Department through the Health Promotion Branch for the collaboration, which he described as strategic in improving health outcomes and which could later be extended to the whole campus, and to UMS branches in Labuan and Sandakan.
'The Higher Education Ministry also promotes walking 10,000 steps a day. At UMS, we have the walk and talk programme on Wednesday evenings which provides an opportunity for lecturers, staff and students to discuss matters while walking and I hope we can continue with this.
'UMS offers trails for walks, and we just opened one more recently. UMS is a safe space for physical activities,' he said, adding that he walks up six floors to his office at the Chancellory Building to stay fit.
Kasim said to bring down the escalating medical costs at UMS, staff and students need to practice a healthy lifestyle and should do recreational activities for at least an hour a day.
The campaign which is championing the Ministry of Health's Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat (ANMS), is a collaboration between the UMS-UNICEF Communication for Development (C4D) Research Unit which is based at the faculty, and the Health Promotion Branch of the Sabah Health Department.
The campaign was mooted by the Health Promotion Branch which approached the UMS-UNICEF C4D Research Unit. The Research Unit focuses on the use of evidence-based research and communication interventions to change behaviours.
The campaign officially known as FSSK x ANMS, with FSSK referring to acronym for the faculty, has adopted #MoveMunchBalance as its tagline for all communication messages and materials.
UMS-UNICEF C4D Research Unit head Dr Latif Lai explained 'Move' refers to the need to have at least 150 minutes of moderate exercise per week, 'Munch' to eating five servings of vegetables and fruits a day and to make this a lifelong habit, and 'Balance' refers to following the Malaysian Healthy Plate recommendation that promotes half a portion of vegetables and fruits and a quarter portion each of carbohydrates and protein.
Some 200 students took part in the launch at the faculty on Wednesday, which also saw the Vice Chancellor joining them in an exercise routine, before flagging them off for a 10,000 steps walk.
Present were Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Dean, Professor Dr Asmady Idris, Health Promotion Branch head Nor Saadah Omar, Sabah Health Department Nutrition Branch head Shahrulnaz Norhazli Nazri and student leader Mohamad Hafiezan Fiezal Haron.

Sabah third highest in HIV cases

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah has Malaysia's third highest HIV cases after Selangor and Kuala Lumpur with 344 new cases recorded in 2024. The UMS Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities aims to increase awareness among students to spread information and understanding to peers, family members and the public about HIV/AIDS and LGBT issues. Speaking at the Red Ribbon Talk, its Programme Director Prof. Dr Dzurizah Ibrahim said the forum is an educational platform and awareness initiative that aims to provide exposure to students about HIV issues that are becoming increasingly serious, especially among young people. She said the percentage of HIV cases among young Malaysians, particularly those aged between 20 to 29 years, is also at an alarming rate. 'What is more concerning is that recent statistics also show that many of those infected are men who practice risky sexual behaviour that is often done without knowledge, without information and without consideration of long-term consequences, whether in terms of health, emotions or their own future. 'In the era of globalisation and information openness, many students are exposed to external influences including deviant lifestyles that contradict Malaysia's religious, cultural and moral values. 'We cannot allow the normalisation of lifestyles that harm public health or corrupt the morals of the younger generation who will build our nation's success in the future. 'Most importantly, the programme aims to reduce social stigma towards HIV patients and ensure they are not to be shunned but to be understood, helped and supported,' she said. Meanwhile, UMS' Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities Dean Prof Dr Asmady Idris who officiated the ceremony, said the timing of the programme is important given Sabah's HIV statistics. 'The hosting of the Red Ribbon Talk 2025 is very timely, especially when Sabah has been listed as the third-highest State in Malaysia recording new HIV cases,' he said. He said that while there has been a decrease in the number of cases compared to previous years, the figures shared in Parliament in March 2025 remain concerning and require serious attention from all parties. He pointed out that the LGBT issues discussed in the forum is not intended to condemn anyone but to understand social reality, approach it with knowledge and empathy and build inclusive solution strategies. 'Islamic teachings and other religions clearly outline the boundaries that need to be maintained, but at the same time emphasise wisdom, compassion and guidance in dealing with people who are struggling with identity confusion or social pressure,' he said.

DBKK offers RM2 per rat caught at central market

KOTA KINABALU (June 25): Individuals who catch and surrender rats to Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) from now until 31 July will receive RM2 for each rat, said Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah. 'We encourage the public to help catch as many rats as possible,' he said during the launch of the rat eradication campaign at the Kota Kinabalu Central Market today. The initiative is part of a nationwide campaign involving 10 local authorities, organised by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT), with DBKK nominated by the Sabah Government to represent the state. The campaign aims to eliminate rat infestations in identified areas, particularly public markets, and to achieve a Rodent Index of 1 or below. It also seeks to improve the efficiency of local authorities in rat control, enhance environmental cleanliness and foster healthy competition among local councils. 'In Kota Kinabalu, this campaign will run at the Central Market until 31 July 2025,' said Sabin. He added that the initiative aligns with DBKK's vision of making Kota Kinabalu a liveable city — safe, clean and healthy for all. It also supports the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the government's Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat (National Healthy Malaysia Agenda). 'This shows that local actions can have a global impact. What we do today will help create a better future for the next generation,' he said, noting the campaign also promotes smart partnerships between DBKK, the private sector and the community, in line with the Local Agenda 21 Programme. Among the campaign's activities are communal clean-up (gotong-royong) efforts at the Central Market and the implementation of rat control measures using physical, mechanical and chemical methods, in accordance with rat control guidelines. DBKK will also organise a stall cleanliness competition and a rat catching competition, with a RM2 incentive for every rat handed over. Informational exhibitions and brochures on environmental health were also prepared for the campaign launch to raise public awareness. Traders are encouraged to register as Smart City Friends at a designated counter to strengthen cooperation between DBKK and the business community in keeping the Central Market and the wider city clean and orderly. Sabin highlighted the health risks posed by rat infestations, particularly leptospirosis, a disease transmitted to humans through water contaminated with rat urine. 'Rats are not only unpleasant but dangerous. If we do not act, public health, the city's image and business activities — especially in busy areas like the Central Market — could be seriously affected,' he cautioned. He noted that DBKK has long carried out regular rat control operations in public markets and busy areas. In 2023, DBKK exterminated 1,299 rats. Between January and June 2024, the number was 775. For the same period this year, 528 rats have been caught. At the Kota Kinabalu Central Market alone, 111 rats were caught between January and June 2024. So far this year, 187 rats have been caught during the same timeframe. 'DBKK cannot act alone. Cleanliness and environmental safety are the responsibility of everyone — traders, market users, nearby residents and visitors,' Sabin stressed. He urged the public to dispose of waste properly, keep stall areas clean and report signs of rodent activity. 'I am confident that with teamwork and support from all parties, we can make Kota Kinabalu a model city — clean, healthy and liveable for all,' he said. Bekenu Open Air Market to be transformed into Wellness Hub Sibuti

MIRI (June 21): The Open Air Market in Bekenu is set for a major transformation, as the building undergoes upgrading works to become the new Wellness Hub Sibuti, a flagship community health initiative by the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH). The project, which began on June 5, involves extensive repair and renovation works costing RM977,804, and is expected to be completed within 24 weeks, by Nov 20 this year. Once completed, the facility will provide integrated and comprehensive health and wellness services to the local community, read a press statement by the Miri Divisional Health Office today. This initiative aligns with MOH's shift from a traditional 'Sick Care' approach to a proactive 'Health Care' mode, aimed at empowering individuals to take ownership of their health, as well as that of their families and communities. The initiative also supports Thrust 2 of the National Agenda for a Healthy Malaysia (ANMS), focusing on the prevention of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and high cholesterol. The upgraded facility will be equipped with modern and eco-friendly features, including consultation rooms, a multimedia studio, meeting rooms, a wellness studio, gymnasium, gallery space, and administrative offices. Services to be offered include health risk assessments, stop-smoking programmes, weight management through the IFitEr (I Fit and Eat Right) programme, lifestyle counselling, and health education. The hub is designed to cater to a wide segment of the community, including teenagers, housewives, senior citizens, and the working population, promoting behavioural changes toward healthier living through skill-building and community engagement. The project is being carried out by Indah Suria Enterprise. Meanwhile, a project site visit and briefing session was recently held with the project contractor. The session was attended by Deputy Minister of Health Malaysia, Dato Lukanisman Awang Sauni; Miri Divisional Health Officer, Dr P Raviwharmman A/L Packierisamy and officers from the Ministry of Health Malaysia as well as the Miri Divisional Health Office.
