Anwar and Abang Johari set to sign landmark oil & gas deal in 2 days

KUCHING: Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg says that he and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim are set to sign an agreement in two days to resolve long-standing issues surrounding Sarawak's oil and gas resources.
"Just wait — there will be a formal document between the prime minister and myself concerning the oil and gas agreement," he said after officiating the International Construction Week (ICW) Borneo Region here.
He was responding to questions about his recent meeting with Anwar, which focused on finalising matters related to negotiations between Petronas and Sarawak's state-owned Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros).
Abang Johari hinted that the federal government had agreed to recognise both the Petroleum Development Act 1974 (PDA74) and Sarawak's Oil Mining Ordinance 1958 (OMO) as coexisting legal instruments governing the industry.
He also confirmed that Putrajaya recognised Petros as the sole aggregator of oil and gas resources in Sarawak.
Abang Johari said both governments had reached a consensus on the commercial agreement between Petronas and Petros, including increasing Sarawak's equity in liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities in Bintulu.
The Prime Minister's Office had earlier issued a statement confirming that both parties had come to an agreement aimed at resolving all prior disputes and facilitating closer collaboration between Petronas and Petros.
The statement said that the move was vital to unlocking the sector's full potential and ensuring its effective implementation, including the expedited commercial supply of energy to Asean nations.
The high-level meeting took place at Perdana Putra in Putrajaya on May 9 and was attended by top executives from both Petronas and Petros.
The announcement comes amid heightened tensions between the Sarawak government and Petronas.
Recently, the Sarawak government issued a legal notice alleging that Petronas Carigali was operating unlawfully in the state, having failed to comply with Section 7(e) of the Sarawak Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016.
Petronas Carigali was given 21 days to obtain the necessary operating licence, with failure to do so potentially resulting in financial penalties under Section 21A of the same ordinance.
Last week, Petronas failed in its bid to secure a court injunction at the Kuching High Court to halt a suit filed by Petros. The suit challenges Petronas over unpaid gas revenues and seeks to prevent the court from proceeding with the case.
Abang Johari recently commented that he was "playing ball" with Petronas amid the ongoing legal and political negotiations over natural gas rights in Sarawak.

Sarawak to be first state with diversity unit

(Ukas pic) PETALING JAYA : Sarawak will be the first state in the country to set up a diversity, equality and inclusivity unit, premier Abang Johari Openg revealed. The unit, known as D2EI for diversity, equality, equity and inclusivity, will be set up in the state department of women and family development, The Borneo Post reported. Abang Johari said the D2EI principles are in line with his administration's post-Covid-19 development strategy, which emphasises inclusivity. He also believes that these values could help raise household income and reduce poverty across the state over time. For now, Abang Johari said the state government hopes to boost the involvement of women in high-growth sectors, by providing support in the form of economic grants, digital entrepreneurship training and startup assistance. 'We have asked the banks to assist us in investment-related efforts, including lifelong learning opportunities. This will certainly empower women more comprehensively in line with the D2EI values,' he was quoted as saying. This is not the first time Sarawak has introduced progressive policies. In 2023, it became the first state in Malaysia to have an ombudsman law. DEI policies, whose origins date back to the US civil rights movement, made headlines after US president Donald Trump issued an executive order after taking office in January directing government agency chiefs to dismantle DEI policies at federal agencies, federal contractors and in the private sector.

Abang Jo to launch Sarawak's ‘White House' on Monday

Sarawak's new administrative complex in Petra Jaya has been nicknamed the Sarawak White House for its resemblance to the White House in Washington. (Dayak Daily pic) PETALING JAYA : Sarawak's new administrative complex in Petra Jaya, dubbed Sarawak's 'White House', will have its soft opening by state premier Abang Johari Openg on Monday (Aug 4), coinciding with his 75th birthday. The building will serve as the new administrative hub for the state government. Abang Johari said the building is not a residence but will function solely as a facility for government administration, Dayak Daily reported. He said the building's design reflects Sarawak's aspirations to be a region with sound governance, strong institutions and global outlook. An official name for the building has yet to be announced, but it has been popularly called Sarawak's 'White House' for its resemblance to the residence and workplace of the US president in Washington. Situated on the hills of Petra Jaya, overlooking Sungai Sarawak and near the state assembly building, the complex comprises a three-storey building flanked by two double-storey structures on either side.

The unit, which adopts the D2EI theme of Sarawak's Women's Day 2025, embodies the state's commitment to a people-centred development approach that upholds fairness in diversity regardless of geography, gender, ethnicity, religion or ability. At the Sarawak Women's Day 2025 celebration held at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex here today, Abang Johari said the state government intends to strengthen women's involvement in high-growth sectors. 'This includes support in the form of economic grants, digital entrepreneurship training and start-up assistance. We have grants from the government and the state holds some influence in Affin Bank as a major stakeholder. 'We have asked the bank to assist us in investment-related efforts, including lifelong learning opportunities. This will certainly empower women more comprehensively in line with the D2EI values,' he said. He added the D2EI principles align with the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy 2030, which also emphasises inclusivity, and believed these values could help raise household income and reduce poverty across the state over time. Meanwhile, Minister for Women, Childhood, and Community Wellbeing Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said her ministry is working with key organisations including the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the 30% Club, and the Asian Women Leadership University College (AWLUC) to further strengthen the direction and implementation of the D2EI initiative. In this regard, she said the ministry is seeking support and sponsorship from the Sarawak government to fund studies for selected individuals to pursue the Master of Arts in Leadership Development programme at AWLUC, which costs RM105,000 in total (RM35,000 per student for the entire duration). Abang Johari approved the request, stating that the funding would be disbursed through Yayasan Sarawak. Also present were deputy premiers Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas and Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian; DUN Speaker Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar; Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah; and Sarawak State Secretary Dato Sri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki.
