Rahm Emanuel Joins CNN as Political Commentator
Look out, Scott Jennings!
CNN said it hired Rahm Emanuel, the former Obama advisor and Chicago mayor, as a senior commentator on political and global affairs. Emanuel most recently served as U.S. Ambassador to Japan.

His hire comes as CNN has tried to lure conservative and center-right viewers by enlisting the aforementioned Jennings, a former Bush advisor whose presence on the network has increased in recent weeks. Jennings appears frequently in Washington political panels and on the primetime show 'NewsNight,' and even recently made a foray into CNN's more traditional news programming. His support for the policies of the Trump administration has brought him directly into on-air conflict with several CNN anchors, who often accuse him of grandstanding.
Emanuel could serve to balance the scales. A former chief of staff in the Obama White House, Emanuel is known for having a blunt demeanor. 'You have to be idealistic enough to know why you're doing what you're doing, and then ruthless enough to get it done,' Emanuel told a group of graduate students at Stanford University in 2017.
CNN has seen its viewership erode noticeably since the 2024 presidential election, and recently reworked a good portion of its weekday schedule.
Emanuel served as a U.S. Congressman from Illinois for six years, and also worked as an advisor in the Clinton administration.
He holds a bachelor's degree from Sarah Lawrence College and earned a master's degree in speech and communication at Northwestern University.
Emanuel is represented by WME, but not by his brother, Ari Emanuel, who is CEO of Endeavor the talent-and-sports conglomerate that is the agency's corporate parent.

BRUSSELS (AP) — Belgium rolled out the blue carpet Saturday for Rihanna and other stars who turned out for the world premiere of the new Smurf movie. Rihanna produced ″Smurfs″ and voices Smurfette in the summer family film, a live-action animated reboot that takes the little creatures on a Smurfette-led rescue mission to save Papa Smurf. At Saturday's showing in Brussels, the visibly pregnant Grammy winner chatted with children, linked arms with someone dressed as her cartoon alter-ego, and joined the audience arm in arm with A$AP Rocky. Film director Chris Miller held Smurf toys and other cast members at the premiere included James Corden and Dan Levy. Many of the guests wore a shade of Smurf-ish blue. The movie premieres in the U.S. on July 18. Belgian comics artist Peyo created the Smurfs — known here as ″Schtroumpfs″ — and the Belgian capital embraced the premiere with a weekend of events. It took place in central Brussels, not far from a Smurf museum. The city's famed Mannekin Pis statue was dressed for the occasion as No Name Smurf. The city's Grand-Place held Smurf-themed events all weekend, and tourist buses and train cars were decorated in blue.

Zohran Mamdani's Viral Comments On Capitalism
This week, 33-year-old Zohran Mamdani — a self-proclaimed democratic socialist — won the New York City Mayoral Democratic Primary, beating out former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. Since his victory, Mamdani has faced backlash from both Republicans and Democrats in his own party. President Donald Trump called his victory a "terrible thing for our country," while Democratic lawmaker Laura Gillen called Mamdani the "absolute wrong choice for New York." Some of Mamdani's political stances as a democratic socialist have been questioned, and in a now-viral clip from a recent interview with CNN, he was put on the spot regarding his beliefs. "Do you like capitalism?" the host questioned. "No. I have many critiques of capitalism." "I think ultimately, the definition for me, of why I call myself a democratic socialist, is the words of Dr. King decades ago. He said, 'Call it democracy or call it democratic socialism; there must be a better distribution of wealth for all of God's children in this country.'" "And that's what I'm focused on, is dignity and taking on income inequality." In response to the clip, many people online have praised Mamdani for being willing to say something so controversial in American politics. "Thank god we have a politician who is finally brave enough to say that yeah capitalism does fucking suck actually," one person wrote in response to the clip. "I saw him say this on CNN and my jaw dropped. They straight up asked him if he 'likes capitalism' and he said 'no.' And I don't think that's gonna be a problem for him! Watershed moment," another person agreed. "One of my favorite things that Zohran does is that he has a quote for everything. A lot of times, they're from people like Mandela and MLK, figures whose progressive ideals often get downplayed. Try to critique this take and now you look like an anti-MLK asshole. Good stuff,' this person wrote. And finally, this person said: "Zohran is so skilled at flipping any gotcha question around to make it look like the person asking it is insane."
