The suspect is believed to have used a
YouTube channel under the pretence of helping impoverished Filipino children to solicit donations – a revelation that has outraged both the South Korean and international public.
According to Philippine media outlet GMA Network and the Philippine National Police Cybercrime Division, the suspect, identified only as A, was arrested on June 11 in Cagayan de Oro City. Authorities rescued the underage girl along with her two-month-old baby, who was allegedly fathered by A.

Investigators said the arrest stemmed from online surveillance conducted by the National Coordination Centre against Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children, which discovered a suspicious YouTube video suggesting potential crimes against minors.
Authorities identified the South Korean man as the account holder, and determined he had been living with the 14-year-old girl. They later confirmed that she had given birth to his child, prompting charges under multiple laws including the Special Protection of Children Against Abuse Act, the Anti-Rape Law, and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act.
Although police have not released the suspect's name, he is widely believed to be a YouTuber who operated a so-called study room for children in poor neighbourhoods and appealed for donations from South Korean viewers.

Online watchdog Crime Net, which documents criminal activity by South Korean nationals abroad, alleged in two recent videos that A was behind the YouTube account in question. The term 'poverty porn' has been used to describe his content – media that exploits the suffering of the poor to generate sympathy and monetary donations.

Why Hong Kong is a fledgling hub for pre-owned Hermes bags and other luxury goods
Hong Kong's market for pre-owned luxury goods such as Hermes and Chanel handbags has attracted a growing number of resellers from countries such as the Philippines and India, according to industry players. Advertisement Second-hand luxury retailers said Hong Kong had become a top choice for sourcing among Indian and Filipino merchandisers, owing to the city's reputation for selling authentic goods, ease of travel and tax-free status. They also pointed out that the city had a vast amount of second-hand luxury goods due to residents' relative wealth. Tim Lo Hiu-fung, owner of Coco Approved, a second-hand and consignment store that has been operating for 11 years, said the number of Filipino buyers had increased notably following the pandemic. 'We had quite a lot of Filipino sellers who literally just came in and took photos and then sent them to the clients or even did live sales,' Lo stated, referring to the practice of selling to customers through live streaming via social media. Advertisement The pre-owned luxury trade was put in the spotlight weeks ago when a male robber stole 14 pre-owned Hermes handbags before police arrested him and recovered most of the items. Hermes is known for its secretive and exclusive allocation system in which specific highly coveted bags such as the Birkin and Kelly models are rarely displayed openly and are only offered to a clientele who have significant purchase histories or fulfilled certain 'pre-spend' requirements.

Philippines-China sea dispute moves to legal battlefield with cyber libel suit
The Philippines ' maritime dispute with China has spilled into the courts after a top coastguard official filed a cyber libel case against a pro-Beijing influencer over explosive – and, he claims, baseless – allegations that he is a paid asset of the United States. Commodore Jay Tarriela, spokesman for Philippine Coast Guard operations in the West Philippine Sea, lodged a complaint on Friday at the Manila prosecutor's office against Sass Rogando Sasot, a popular vlogger currently based in Beijing. The case is unprecedented: the first known libel lawsuit arising directly from the online information war surrounding the Philippines' increasingly fraught stand-off with China in the contested South China Sea According to Tarriela's complaint, Sasot falsely accused him on social media of receiving a US$4 million 'talent fee' from Washington, and of collecting bags of cash from the residence of House Speaker Martin Romualdez as payment for criticising Beijing's actions in the West Philippine Sea – Manila's term for the part of the South China Sea it claims as its own. She also alleged he had been expelled from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) for cheating. 02:09 China and Philippines clash over disputed Sandy Cay in the Spratly Islands China and Philippines clash over disputed Sandy Cay in the Spratly Islands In an interview with This Week in Asia, Tarriela said the accusations had taken a deep personal toll. 'Absolutely,' he said, when asked if the claims had affected his family.
