The sleeping Heathrow boss proves we're a nation led by donkeys
The apology nestles in a 75-page report authored by Ruth Kelly, the former transport secretary, who examined the circumstances relating to the closure of Heathrow Airport on March 21. It's an impressively speedy job, with most inquiries of this nature usually waiting for the protagonists to die – or, at best, until their memories have long faded and the events have been massaged into a Netflix documentary – to be concluded.
Yet here is a report published while the senior folk of one of the largest and busiest airports in Europe are still firmly in post, and clinging on for dear life – especially the chief executive, Thomas Woldbye.
Indeed he has been vexed at the idea that he acted in any way other than exemplary over the 18-hour shutdown of Heathrow that resulted in the cancellation of 1,300 flights and affected some 270,000 passengers. The day after the shutdown, the Danish businessman even told Emma Barnett on BBC Radio 4's Today programme that, in relation to the actions and decisions of Heathrow and related parties, he was 'proud of the entire ecosystem'.
Pride being the most plausible emotion for him to express because, when the decision was taken to press the Heathrow off-button, Woldbye was asleep.
Which for a Dane strikes me as a peculiarly British reaction, albeit with firm roots in the comedy of Captain Mainwaring of Dad's Army or Blackadder's General Melchett.
Our hero, Woldbye, as you can read on page 36 of the report (section 14, subsection 3), 'first became aware of the incident at approximately 06:45 on 21 March, and received a debrief from Mr Echave [Heathrow's chief operating officer]'.
'Fine work, man,' he might have said. 'Now, what's going on?'
And, famously, it was not for want of trying to get hold of Woldbye during the night. In fact, what is known in the trade as the most 'critical event communication platform that provides information and sends alerts through all available communication channels', an F24 alarm was issued at 00.21.
This is the technical equivalent of a cold bucket of water being thrown in your face, a gong being struck by your ear, a jumping up and down on Daddy at dawn. There was another F24 sent at 01.52, this one activating Gold (harder slaps around the chops, cries of 'wake up, you idiot!') and Echave, also we learn, 'attempted to call Mr Woldbye several times during the early hours'.
Except Woldbye's mobile, albeit on his bedside table, was on silent. Or, as the report states, 'the phone had gone into a silent mode, without him being aware it had done so'. That's right, the man in charge of Heathrow – an airport that uses the most sophisticated technology available to run and protect a place with planes departing and landing every 45 seconds – has a phone that, completely of its own accord, jumps into 'do not disturb' mode.
Perhaps the man whose most recent annual take-home pay was £3.2 million needs a second phone. Or how about an old-school landline with a trilling bell on it?
We Brits are, quite clearly, lions led by donkeys.
Incompetence seems key to the skill set in running either a large company or indeed government. There are, for example, the civil servants of the Department for Business and Trade who, in the face of colossal public pressure and moral finger-wagging, continue to resist fully compensating the likes of Sir Alan Bates for the Horizon IT system scandal. Last weekend he revealed that he had been offered a 'take it or leave it' offer of 49.2 per cent of his original claim. The compensation scheme, Sir Alan said, had become 'quasi-kangaroo courts in which the Department for Business and Trade sits in judgement of the claims and alters the goal posts as and when it chooses'.
Or, consider the major water companies presiding over the effluent that pollutes our rivers. Earlier this month, Chris Weston, the CEO of Thames Water – Britain's biggest water company; a firm with massive debts, outdated infrastructure and more leaks and spills than the Titanic – admitted that senior managers had been in line for substantial bonuses courtesy of a privately financed £3 billion rescue-plan loan. Following pressure from Environment Secretary Steve Reed, Weston's spokesperson then announced that payments had been 'paused'. Yet, as The Guardian reported, Thames Water 'declined to answer questions about whether any of the retention package has already been paid'.
High Court judge Mr Justice Leech, in relation to an £800 million cost to be spent on interest and advisers for the debt deal, said: 'Customers and residents who are struggling with their bills will be horrified at these costs and mystified how the Thames Water Group has been able to fund them or why it has agreed to do so.'
Ponder, too, on those who run Royal Mail, increasing prices while presiding over terminal decline of their services, and the pen-pushing ninnies of our councils conjuring up safety costs that are wrecking traditional country street fairs and festivals.
Indeed, just look to the politicians who run our country. We have a Chancellor in Rachel Reeves who claims to support hospitality while actually savaging it with increases in National Insurance Contributions for employers, and a Secretary of State for Education gleefully manifesting over a VAT policy that is closing down private schools.
Hapless leadership is a terrific subject for fiction. But, sometimes, life is not supposed to mimic art.

A Stronger Q2 Amid Headwinds Despite broader economic uncertainties, Netflix has not seen any significant shifts in consumer behavior in the last quarter. During the Q2 earnings call, management emphasized that key indicators such as subscriber retention, engagement, and plan mix had remained stable and in line with expectations, despite recent price changes. In the second quarter, Netflix grew revenue by 16% year-over-year to $11.07 billion. According to the management, 'hit series like Squid Game S3, Sirens, Ginny & Georgia S3, The Eternaut and Secrets We Keep, and popular films like Tyler Perry's STRAW and Exterritorial' drove this increase. Diluted net income of $7.19 per share increased by an impressive 47% compared to the prior-year quarter. Both revenue and earnings surpassed the consensus estimates. Operating margins also increased to 34% from 27% in the second quarter of 2024. Netflix raised its full-year revenue guidance, citing currency exchange tailwinds and increased confidence in its core business performance. The company now expects revenue between $44.8 billion and $45.2 billion, up from the previous estimate of $43.5 billion to $44.5 billion. This implies year-over-year growth of 15% to 16%. According to CFO Spencer Neumann, much of the $1 billion increase at the midpoint is due to favorable foreign exchange movements caused by a weakening US dollar. Neumann also noted that the underlying business fundamentals are improving. Membership growth picked up at the end of Q2 and is expected to continue, aided by a robust content slate in the second half of the year. This growth is being fueled by both returning fan-favorite titles and new releases, such as Wednesday Season 2, the Stranger Things finale, Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore 2, and Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, along with the highly anticipated Canelo-Crawford live boxing match, which is seen to have driven subscriber engagement and stickiness. Big Bets, Payoffs Could Be Bigger Regarding advertising, management stated that it is becoming an increasingly important contributor to Netflix's revenue. Netflix's co-CEO, Theodore Sarandos, emphasized that AI-powered tools help real creators do better, faster work rather than replacing them. Furthermore, management stressed that Netflix is not attempting to replicate YouTube's user-generated model. Instead, it sees opportunities for curated partnerships that elevate creator content to complement its overall brand and UI design. With regard to gaming, while monetization isn't immediate, Netflix is confident about the total addressable market for gaming and plans to scale when the time comes. Netflix's balance sheet remains strong and more shareholder-friendly. The company ended the second quarter with $8.2 billion in cash and cash equivalents and $14.5 billion in gross debt. It also generated free cash flow of $2.3 billion, allowing it to repurchase shares worth $1.6 billion. For the full year 2025, analysts expect revenue to increase at the same rate as the company's projections, with further growth of 12.6% in 2026. Earnings are expected to increase by 32.1% and 22% over the next two years. Currently, Netflix stock trades at a premium of 46x forward 2025 earnings, relatively lower than its five-year average price-to-earnings ratio of 50.3x. The streaming market remains fiercely competitive, with Disney (DIS), Amazon (AMZN), Apple (AAPL), and others fighting for market share. Netflix retains significant competitive advantages due to its global scale across more than 190 countries and over 300 million paid memberships. Is Netflix Stock a Buy Now? Overall, Netflix stock is a 'Moderate Buy' on Wall Street. Of the 45 analysts covering the stock, 27 recommend a 'Strong Buy,' three rate it as a 'Moderate Buy,' and 15 suggest holding. Based on an average price target of $1,253.30, Wall Street anticipates potential upside of around 2.5% over the next 12 months. The Street-high estimate of $1,600 indicates the stock could gain as much as 31% this year. Netflix's Q2 earnings show a fundamentally strong business firing on multiple cylinders. Subscriber growth remains robust, margins are expanding, and monetization avenues like ads, pricing, and international markets are accelerating. Netflix stock isn't just a smart buy for now. From improving its AI capabilities to redefining engagement through games and creator content, Netflix is evolving quickly but carefully, making it an excellent long-term addition to any diverse portfolio. However, given that the stock is trading at a premium, risk-averse investors may want to wait for a better entry point around the $900 level. Microsoft SharePoint attack: Officials issue warning about 'active exploitation'
Federal cybersecurity officials have issued a warning to Microsoft users about a security flaw allowing hackers to access to certain SharePoint systems. The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) posted an alert on its website Sunday, July 20, saying it was aware of "active exploitation" of a security vulnerability that was allowing unauthorized access to on-site SharePoint servers. The "scope and impact" of the issue was still being assessed, CISA said in the notice posted July 20, but officials said the vulnerability "poses a risk" to organizations that house their own SharePoint servers. Microsoft, in an alert posted Saturday, July 19, said the vulnerability enables an 'authorized attacker to perform spoofing over a network,' a type of cyberattack in which an attacker attempts to trick a user or system into believing they are a trusted or known source. "The FBI is aware of the matter, and we are working closely with our federal government and private sector partners," a Microsoft spokesperson told USA TODAY Monday. SharePoint is used by government agencies and businesses in the U.S. and around the world, as reported by Reuters and the Washington Post, which first reported the attacks. It was not immediately known who was behind the attack, but a cybersecurity researcher told Reuters on Monday, July 21, it is likely the work of a single actor. "Based on the consistency of the tradecraft seen across observed attacks, the campaign launched on Friday appears to be a single actor," Rafe Pilling, Director of Threat Intelligence at Sophos, a British cybersecurity firm, told the outlet. "However, it's possible that this will quickly change." Microsoft SharePoint server hack likely caused by single actor — and thousands of firms now vulnerable: researchers
A sweeping cyberespionage operation targeting Microsoft server software compromised about 100 different organizations as of the weekend, one of the researchers who helped uncover the campaign said Monday. Microsoft on Saturday issued an alert about 'active attacks' on self-managed SharePoint servers, which are widely used by government agencies and businesses to share documents within organisations. Dubbed a 'zero day' because it leverages a previously undisclosed digital weaknesses, the hacks allow spies to penetrate vulnerable servers and potentially drop a back door to secure continuous access to victim organizations. Microsoft on Saturday issued an alert about 'active attacks' on SharePoint servers used within organizations. Gorodenkoff – Vaisha Bernard, the chief hacker at Eye Security, a Netherlands-based cybersecurity firm which discovered the hacking campaign targeting one of its clients on Friday, said that an internet scan carried out with the ShadowServer Foundation had uncovered nearly 100 victims altogether – and that was before the technique behind the hack was widely known. 'It's unambiguous,' Bernard said. 'Who knows what other adversaries have done since to place other back doors.' He declined to identify the affected organizations, saying that the relevant national authorities had been notified. The ShadowServer Foundation didn't immediately return a message seeking comment. Another researcher said that, so far, the spying appeared to be the work of a single hacker or set of hackers. 'It's possible that this will quickly change,' said Rafe Pilling, Director of Threat Intelligence at Sophos, a British cybersecurity firm. Microsoft said it had 'provided security updates and encourages customers to install them,' a company spokesperson said in an emailed statement. According to data from Shodan, a search engine that helps to identify internet-linked equipment, over 8,000 servers online could theoretically have already been compromised by hackers. Those servers include major industrial firms, banks, auditors, healthcare companies, and several U.S. state-level and international government entities. 'The SharePoint incident appears to have created a broad level of compromise across a range of servers globally,' said Daniel Card of British cybersecurity consultancy, PwnDefend. 'Taking an assumed breach approach is wise, and it's also important to understand that just applying the patch isn't all that is required here.'
