Undeterred by his physical limitations, Rashmikant supports his family of five by collecting milk from local farmers and preparing paneer (cottage cheese), which he supplies to restaurants and at feasts.
An electrician by profession, Rashmikant suffered an electric shock while repairing an 11 KV line at Peteipur village, 25 years back. He was 31 then. He was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack in a critical condition where doctors had to amputate his left hand from the elbow to save his life and his right leg was handicapped. What followed was a month-long hospital stay, with local villagers stepping in to help cover his medical expenses. But the real challenge of livelihood began after he was discharged. Earning a living with just one hand and a leg seemed impossible but Rashmikant refused to give up. Although painful, he began training to use his right hand and left leg to ride a bicycle.
Initially, he tried managing a small dairy farm with five cows. However, due to his physical limitations, he was unable to maintain the cattle and eventually, had to sell them. As an alternative, he shifted focus on procuring milk from local farmers. Today, he collects 350 litres of milk and prepares 60 kg of paneer which he sells in the market. He now earns between Rs 20,000 and Rs 25,000 per month.

Gurgaon: The state vigilance and anti-corruption bureau arrested Palwal's chief medical officer (CMO) after he was caught accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh at his official residence in a sting operation organised on Thursday night. Officials said Palwal resident Manohar, one of the three partners of Sunrise Trauma Hospital in the south Haryana district, complained to the state vigilance bureau last week that CMO Dr Jai Bhagwan was demanding a bribe of Rs 15 lakh to let the facility operate. Manohar alleged that the CMO threatened to shut down the facility by claiming that there were deficiencies in its functioning. The hospital, according to Manohar, was opened three months ago by him and two others – Dheeraj and Subhash. Dr Bhagwan was arrested as soon as he took the cash. SVACB also carried out a search at the house and found cash worth Rs 3 lakh in a cupboard there. "A case has been registered against the accused under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Section 308(2) (extortion) of BNS. Further investigation is underway," a member of the SVACB said on Friday. Sources told TOI that the CMO may have sought bribes related to administrative permissions or contractual clearances under the health department. Investigators are looking into the possibility of the involvement of other officials in the district health department. Dr Bhagwan has been suspended in the past after being accused of serious allegations. In 2020, while he was the Jind CMO, Dr Bhagwan was suspended after a departmental probe found irregularities in the recruitment of ayurvedic medical officers. He was accused of manipulating vacancy declarations and bypassing merit-based selections. The same year, while serving as the civil surgeon in Kaithal, he led a raid on a diagnostics centre suspected of conducting illegal prenatal sex determination tests. But the officer was suspended soon after, following a complaint filed by a local BJP MLA. His suspension triggered statewide protests, with the Haryana Civil Medical Services Association calling it unjust and punishment for his efforts to curb illegal practices. Dr Bhagwan, during his stint as the Gurgaon CMO, was accused of molestation by a nurse in 2018. Then, in 2021, as Sonipat's principal medical officer, an FIR for molestation was registered against him after a doctor alleged that he had sent her obscene messages. He was suspended by the health department a third time.

Centre aims to establish 1,100 Ayushman Arogya Mandirs in Delhi by March 31, 2026
Health Minister JP Nadda on Sunday urged all stakeholders to work dedicatedly towards implementing PM-ABHIM (Ayushman Bharat Health Infrastructure Mission) in Delhi, and fulfil the target of opening 1,100 Ayushman Arogya mandirs by March 31, 2026, with an outlay of Rs 1,700 crore. The minister distributed appointment letters to Delhi nursing officers and paramedical staff and flagged off Ayushman Bharat Registration Vans, in the presence of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta at Vigyan Bhawan here. "This is a momentous occasion as today, after 15 years, our nursing officers and paramedical staff are receiving appointment letters. With this, the Delhi government is working towards strengthening the healthcare system by recruiting a specialised workforce," Nadda said. He underlined that Delhi observes the highest healthcare load as people across the country come to Delhi for treatment, and earlier, the healthcare system faced negligence. The Minister commended the efforts of the current Delhi government for strengthening the healthcare infrastructure and implementing Ayushman Bharat-Pradhan Mantri Jan AarogyaYojana (AB-PMJAY) and PM-ABHIM. "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ayushman Vay Vandana was introduced to ensure healthcare for the senior citizens above the age of 70. The Delhi government is working in this direction of ensuring the right to be healthy throughout life with dignity under Vay Vandana," the Health Minister noted. Till date, 4 lakh Ayushman Cards have been issued in Delhi, with 2 lakh cards issued under Vay Vandana. "In 1997, the Health Policy focused primarily on curative care, while under the visionary leadership of PM, the New Health Policy 2017 was introduced with a philosophy of comprehensive care—preventive, promotive, curative, rehabilitative, and palliative - with a special focus on geriatric care," said the minister. He highlighted that "special emphasis is being given to preventive healthcare, under which initiatives for early diagnosis for different diseases have been undertaken. We are focusing on screenings of individuals over the age of 30 and working towards stalling the spread of diseases through early diagnosis". "Till now, 18 crore screenings for hypertension, 17 crore screenings for diabetes, 15 crore screenings for oral cancer, 7.5 crore screenings for breast cancer and 4.5 crore screenings for cervical cancer have been conducted," said Nadda. Maternal Mortality Ratio (MMR) has declined from 130 to 88 per lakh live births, while Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) dropped from 39 to 26. Under-Five Mortality Rate (U5MR) has declined at a rate of 42 per cent, while the global decline is 14 per cent. The neonatal mortality rate has declined by 40 per cent rate while the global average decline was 11 per cent. Nadda also added that "TB incidence has reduced by 17.7 per cent, which is more than double the global decline rate of 8.3 per cent, which is confirmed by the WHO Global TB Report 2024". "The number of medical colleges has increased from 387 in 2014 to 780; the number of medical seats has increased from 51,000 to 1,18,000, aiming for a total increase of 75,000 seats over the next five years," the Health Minister said. On the occasion, CM Gupta stated: "Till now, 4 lakh Ayushman cards have been distributed under the Ayushman Arogya Yojana, which includes 2 lakh Vay Vandana Cards issued to the senior citizens of Delhi. A total of 2,258 individuals have already received medical treatment. 108 hospitals of Delhi have been empanelled under the scheme." She also underlined that "every hospital of Delhi has a Jan Aushadhi Kendra now that ensures access to medicines to all". She also highlighted the efforts of the Delhi government to ensure transparency in the healthcare system while keeping corruption at bay.

Pooja Madhav Wavhal, an IPS aspirant from Pune, won the title of India's 'Sleep Champion of the Year' after completing a unique 60-day sleep internship held in Bengaluru. She outperformed 14 other finalists to claim the top spot and a cash prize of Rs 9.1 lakh by averaging nine hours of sleep each night, Education Today reported. The sleep internship, now in its fourth edition, aims to raise awareness about India's growing sleep deprivation. Over a lakh applicants applied for the programme, but only 15 participants were shortlisted. Each applicant was provided with a mattress from a popular brand and a contactless sleep tracker to monitor their resting habits every night. Throughout the internship, they also took part in sleep-enhancing workshops and daily challenges designed to promote better sleep habits. The finalists also competed in fun tasks such as blindfolded bed-making, alarm clock treasure hunts, and even a final 'sleep-off' to test their discipline and consistency, the report said. Wavhal outshone other interns with an impressive score of 91.36, earning the title and prize. All 15 participants who completed the internship were awarded Rs 1 lakh each for their efforts. The first edition of the internship began in 2019 by the brand and has since completed four seasons. With each round, the program has attracted lakhs of applications. Each year, selected participants, dubbed 'sleep interns,' are paid to sleep at least 9 hours a night for 60 consecutive days. The goal is to monitor sleep quality using a contactless tracker and complete simple feedback routines, all from the comfort of their own homes. In the past, shortlisted candidates were evaluated through online forms, video resumes, and brief interviews.
