Chandigarh municipal corporation misses Daddumajra waste deadline ahead of NGT hearing

Chandigarh: The municipal corporation (MC) has failed to meet its July 31 deadline to clear the legacy waste piled up at Daddumajra dumping ground. In a review meet, the corporation announced a revised deadline — end of Sep.
Presiding over the meeting, UT chief secretary sharply criticised the delay and directed the MC to expedite the clean-up. Despite repeated commitments, mountains of untreated waste continue to dominate the site, raising environmental and civic concerns.
The MC now finds itself scrambling to justify the missed deadline, with the NGT expected to take stock of the situation in the coming weeks.
The failure to clear the waste has impacted the city's performance in the Garbage Free City (GFC) category of the recently announced Swachh Survekshan.
Despite applying for a 7-star rating, Chandigarh received only a 3-star rating, largely due to the piled-up legacy waste.
The issue is also central to an upcoming NGT hearing, scheduled for the second week of Sep, where a detailed report on the missed deadline and current waste status will be submitted.
During the review meet on Tuesday, MC officials told the UT chief secretary that continuous monsoon rains had severely hindered progress.

"The rains are nullifying our efforts. The waste gets soaked, and vehicles can't operate at the site. Practically, work is not possible during rain," sources in the MC said. The new deadline has been set based on workable days at the site.
Despite challenges, the MC claims to have cleared around 70–75% of the third legacy waste dump through an accelerated bioremediation project, with a 15 to 20-fold increase in machinery and manpower. However, ground reality tells a different story, with large volumes of garbage still visibly piled up.
Status of Third Legacy Waste Dump
Start Date: Jan 2025
Total Waste: 2.5 lakh metric tons
Cleared So Far: Approx 1.7 lakh metric tons
Method: Bioremediation in progress
