Wayne Rooney 'lands £800k deal' to be Match of the Day pundit after Lineker exit
Wayne Rooney has reportedly signed an £800,000 deal to be a pundit on Match of the Day from next season. The England icon will join the BBC's flagship show following the departure of Gary Lineker as its host.
Lineker had fronted the programme for 25 years before departing at the end of last season. He had been due to continue hosting FA Cup fixtures and next summer's World Cup, but left the BBC altogether after controversy surrounding a social media post containing an anti-Semetic trope.
He has been replaced by Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan and Kelly Cates who will rotate as host of Match of the Day and Match of the Day 2, the Sunday highlights show.
And the trio will be joined by Rooney who will appear as a pundit, report The Sun. Rooney has dipped his toe into more punditry on the BBC and Sky Sports since he was sacked as Plymouth manager on New Year's Eve.
The deal is said to include the opportunity of a two-year extension, while Rooney is expected to feature as a pundit on the World Cup alongside the likes of Alan Shearer, Jurgen Klinsmann, Rio Ferdinand and Joe Hart.
Rooney, 39, is Manchester United's record goal scorer and held the England record at the time of his retirement. Harry Kane has since surpassed his tally for the Three Lions.
He burst on to the scene at boyhood club Everton before moving to Old Trafford where he scored 253 times in 559 appearances, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League along the way.
Rooney returned to Everton in 2017 before heading Stateside to DC United. He became player-manager at Derby in 2020, where he hung up his boots.
He then returned to Washington to manage DC United, before unsuccessful spells at Birmingham and Plymouth. This latest career move could signal an end to his managerial aspirations.
Lineker hosted his final Match of the Day in May, and signed off with an emotional statement. "Alan [Shearer] and Micah [Richards], I suspect our paths will cross again very shortly," he said.
"Let me take this opportunity to thank all of the other pundits that I've had the pleasure of working with over the last 25 years, you've made my job so much easier.
"Also, a huge thank you to those you don't see at home: the work that goes into making this iconic show is a huge team effort. From the editors, to the analysis team, from the commentators to the floor managers, from the producers to the camera operators, from the PAs to the subs, thank you all, you're the very best.
"Rather like my football career, everyone else did all the hard work and I got the plaudits. It's been an absolute privilege to host Match of the Day for a quarter of a century. It's been utterly joyous. I'd like to wish Gabby, Mark and Kelly for when they sit in this chair - the programme is in the best of hands.
"And my final thank you goes to all of you. Thank you for watching. Thank you for all of your love and support over the years. It's been so special - and I'm sorry that your team was always on last. Time to say goodbye. Goodbye."

Safety 'key to survival' when open water swimming
A swimming coach has urged other swimmers not to risk their lives by straying out of designated bathing follows a similar call by harbour commissioners in Plymouth, Devon, after two swimmers were spotted in the Cattewater - a designated shipping water swimmer and coach Jason Quiterio said: "There are some much bigger visitors in these waters - ships, boats, even the occasional military vessel. "And even if they can see you, they're not exactly nimble when it comes to stopping." Mr Quiterio said he learned the safety message the "hard way" himself many years ago when he drifted into the Cattewater."When I was very young, I made the error of swimming into that area with a friend. "A police boat came along side us and the officers said a massive tanker was coming along. We managed to get out of the way just in time. Swimming into a shipping lane is just dangerous."The open water swimmer, who also coaches at Cornwall's Caradon Swimming Club and Ace Swimming based at the Royal William Yard in Plymouth, said it was essential to stay inside the designated swimming areas and to be as a visible as possible."Wear a bright coloured hat and always use a tow float," he added. 'Military port' Mr Quiterio said he swam the English Channel in 2021 when he dodged jelly fish and excruciating cramp to make the 12-hour crossing from Dover to said it was essential to make the crossing accompanied by a pilot boat as swimmers were impossible for ships' crews to see in a major shipping swimming spots in Plymouth Sound are marked with seasonal marker buoys and include Bovisand Bay, Crownhill Bay, Cawsand Bay, Firestone Bay and Tinside harbour master Captain Richard Allan said signs warned swimmers of areas where they should not be swimming."This is a military port and military vessels have priority over the commercial vessels, but the commercial vessels, just as naval vessels, will struggle to see swimmers in front of them," he said." Man Utd ready to sign 'useful' free agent after failing to land transfer target
Manchester United will still hope to make a bigger splash in the transfer window after seeing their efforts slow down following the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolves Manchester United's quest to improve Ruben Amorim's squad goes on with little over a month until the Premier League returns. And the Portuguese coach will soon have his squad in pre-season training ahead of a tour to the United States. The summer transfer window got off to a quick start with the arrival of Matheus Cunha, but the Red Devils have not been able to build on that momentum. Only the arrival of teenager star Diego Leon has been confirmed since with plenty of work to be done. United have failed to trim their squad thus far too. Christian Eriksen and Victor Lindelof departed at the end of their contracts, while Jonny Evans moved to a coaching role but Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony and Jadon Sancho all remain at Old Trafford. But the club still hope to strengthen in their forward positions despite being unable to secure an agreement for Bryan Mbeumo thus far. An out-and-out striker may not go amiss for Amorim too. United eye free agent Manchester United are ready to sign free agent Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a cost-effective solution for Ruben Amorim's squad. United are in the process of rebuilding their squad the Portuguese coach is said to believe that Calvert-Lewin would be a useful addition alongside more expensive signings. Despite a poor injury record, reports claim that United believe the forward has the qualities required to bolster Amorim's squad. United are ready to offer Calvert-Lewin a contract which would include bonuses tied into appearances as they eye a handy squad player. Calvert-Lewin left Everton after nine years at the end of June and is looking for a new club. The 28-year-old striker scored 71 goals in 273 appearances for the Toffees after joining them from Sheffield United in 2016. Gyokeres latest Any hope Manchester United had of landing Viktor Gyokeres appears to be over as Arsenal close in on deal for the Sweden striker. The Gunners are advancing in talks with Sporting Lisbon as the Portuguese side granted the striker additional time off as they seek to resolve his future. Andrea Berta had been progressing deals for Gyokeres and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, but the former now appears to have won out as Arsenal move closer to finally signing a striker. The two clubs have yet to agree on a fee but it is understood Arsenal and Gyokeres have already agreed personal terms. And with the player prioritising a move to Arsenal, having rejected other suitors, it now looks likely that a deal will be completed. Sancho update Juventus are preparing to make an offer to Manchester United for Jadon Sancho. The Serie A side are said to have already held talks with the winger, who is reportedly open to life in Italy. Per Corriere dello Sport, Juve are willing to allow Douglas Luiz to move in the opposite direction to aid a move. Sancho is said to have been yet to agree personal terms but is willing to reduce his salary. The Old Lady is said to also be considering a move for Tottenham's Yves Bissouma.
