Singapore's Chiral Comics partners Archie Comics for exclusive SG60 book cover
SINGAPORE: Home-grown outfit Chiral Comics has teamed up with American comic book publisher Archie Comics to launch a Singapore-themed variant cover for the first issue of Betty & Veronica: Summer Fun In The Sun.
The exclusive book cover – where main character Archie dons an 'I Love SG' shirt while his best friend Jughead munches on durian – features the characters from the popular franchise (1942 to present) exploring the country's iconic Gardens by the Bay.
It is limited to 300 copies worldwide. Priced at $25.55 each, pre-orders started on July 19 at www.chiralcomics.com. Select Singapore comics retailers like Kalibak Komiks and 1to3 Comics will also carry it.
This SG60 book cover collaboration involves local comic artist Kang Jing (also known as KJ), who was the penciler and inker, and Italy-based freelance comic colourist Daniele Caramanico, who did the colouring.
KJ established Chiral Comics, a Singapore-based art studio which specialises in comic book publishing and visual storytelling, in 2021, and reportedly started working on the Archie project in April 2025.
The 31-year-old, who has been sketching anime characters since he was six, began his comics career in 2019. His debut series The World My Arena (2021 to 2022) has since been adapted into an animated video, and other notable works include bilingual webcomic series Save Me From Chloe (2021) and Zhao (2023), an original wuxia comic series.
KJ has also worked on seven Star Wars-themed projects with Topps, an American trading card manufacturer.
And in 2024, he illustrated a Singapore-themed variant cover featuring the Singapore skyline for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #122 comic. All 525 copies released at comic convention Singapore Comic Con 2024 were sold out. - The Straits Times/ANN

Indonesian boy goes viral for boat race moves, named tourism ambassador [WATCH]
KUALA LUMPUR: Social media has a peculiar way of turning the obscure into global trends, as seen in the case of an Indonesian boy whose commanding presence during a Pacu Jalur boat race went viral and captured the hearts of people worldwide. Rayyan Arkan Dikha, or Dika, 11, was recorded moving rhythmically at the tip of a long wooden boat during the Pacu Jalur festival in Kuantan Singingi. Wearing a black traditional outfit and sunglasses, his composed expression and deliberate gestures drew massive attention online, leading to countless remakes, memes and tributes. The clip quickly turned into a global trend, catching the attention of sports personalities and celebrities. American football star Travis Kelce, Formula One driver Alex Albon, and football players from Paris Saint-Germain were among those who uploaded their own versions of Dika's moves. According to BBC Indonesia, Dika had not planned the dance in advance, it came naturally during the race. As the Togak Luan, his role is to stand at the front of the boat and inspire the rowers with expressive movements while maintaining balance throughout the race. The Pacu Jalur celebration is one of Riau's most important cultural events. Longboats glide along the Batang Kuantan River in front of cheering crowds. The races are accompanied by traditional performances, music, and exhibitions on the riverbanks. In the viral footage, Dika is seen in a Teluk Belanga outfit paired with a Riau-style headcloth. His gestures include sweeping arms, rotating fists, and forward poses, all performed without breaking focus. Despite the surge in popularity, Dika has remained humble. The 11-year-old said he is happy to see people around the world enjoying and imitating the dance. "My friends always tell me I've gone viral," he told BBC Indonesia. In appreciation of his role in preserving cultural heritage, he was named a cultural ambassador last week by the governor of Riau, his home province.

#SHOWBIZ: Grammy-winning US jazz musician Chuck Mangione dies
ROCHESTER: American two-time Grammy-winning jazz flugelhorn player Chuck Mangione, best known for his 1970s cross-over hit "Feels So Good," died this week at age 84 at his home in Rochester, New York. The prolific musician and composer — whose career spanned five decades and 30 albums — died in his sleep on Tuesday, a local funeral home said. "Chuck's love affair with music has been characterised by his boundless energy, unabashed enthusiasm, and pure joy that radiated from the stage," his family said in a statement to the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle newspaper. Mangione showed his appreciation for his audiences by sitting at the edge of the stage after his concerts, signing autographs for fans who stayed to meet him and the band, it said. Born Charles Frank Mangione in 1940 in Rochester, he was a virtuoso flugelhorn and trumpet player. He grew up in a household where his father exposed him to the jazz greats of the 1950s, including Dizzy Gillespie, a family friend who dined with them frequently. He began taking music lessons at age 8, and by the time he was a teenager, Gillespie was so impressed by his musical prowess that he gave Mangione one of his trademark "upswept" trumpets. His composition "Chase The Clouds Away" was featured at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, while his "Give It All You Got" was the theme music for the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. Mangione's biggest hit was his 1977 single "Feels So Good," which reached No.4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was nominated for Record of the Year at the Grammys. His album by the same name is a staple on smooth jazz radio stations. Mangione won two Grammys out of 14 nominations — the first in 1977 for best instrumental composition for "Bellavia," named in honour of his mother. In 1979, he won in the best pop instrumental performance category for "The Children of Sanchez." The latter, a soundtrack for the movie of the same name, also won a Golden Globe. In the late 1990s, Mangione's music attracted new fans after he played himself on the Fox TV cartoon show "King of the Hill" as a celebrity spokesman for the fictional "Mega-lo-mart," with the slogan "shopping feels so good." He also scored the music for the 1998 Valentine's Day episode.
