No arrests yet after body of 21-year-old found in Winterveldt
No suspect has been arrested for the murder of 21-year-old Thulisile Mhlongo, whose body was discovered on June 26 at a dumping site in Winterveld.
She had sustained multiple stab wounds and severe head injuries.
According to SAPS spokesperson, Warrant Officer Marinda Austin, 'The deceased was transported to Ga-Rankuwa Forensic Pathology Center and investigations are still ongoing.'
Austin urged all young women to remain vigilant and prioritise their safety at all times saying, 'Be cautious of your surroundings, avoid walking alone in unsafe areas, and always inform someone about your whereabouts. Build a strong support network in your own family, and don't hesitate to report any threats or suspicious behaviour to the police.'
Rekord spoke to Thulisile's father, Jacky Mhlogo, who said they were first informed of this tragic incident by a person close to their daughter, who had called to tell them that a body had been found at a dumping site in Winterveldt.
On receiving this news they went to the dumping site to confirm her identity. 'Upon our arrival, we realised that the lifeless body was indeed of our daughter,' he said, continuing that as he came closer he noticed that Thulisile's body had been stabbed many times.
Mhlogo said it will take time for them to come to terms with what happened to their daughter as they are still shocked and in disbelief.
He said: 'We had big plans for Thuli and expected great things from her. I work as a driver, and we were planning to buy a truck to start a logistics business, where Thuli would be responsible for overseeing the operations. Now that her life was cut short, we feel completely robbed.'
Thulisile's aunt, Nkateko Mhlongo, said the family is distraught over the loss of the young child, adding, 'It is sad, and I am still in disbelief about what happened to my niece'.
She urged the police to arrest the person responsiblein order to find closure as the family, as all they want is for justice to prevail.

Another resident, Mojalefa Phekana, expressed that the disconnection will affect their children deeply. 'We have children, and our children are feeling the cold. Our children have to go to school, what are they going to bath with? Children cannot go to school without bathing. They are also studying. They cannot study using candles.'However, not every resident was livid about the operation, some residents, like Moirah Mahlase, lauded the utility for taking action against illegal connection in the area. 'I am so happy about this service that City Power has done today. Riverpark residents are happy that they will buy electricity with open hearts. No more izinyokanyoka [illegal connections].' The utility noted they will continue carrying out targeted disconnections to ensure the safety of their infrastructure, and to reduce the risk illegal connections pose to life and property. More than 67,000 police trainee applications received in 24 hours for 5,500 posts
The SAPS has received 67,774 applications for 5,500 police trainee vacancies within 24 hours. Applications for the 2024/2025 financial year opened on Monday — the first time the system has gone online. 'The SAPS website continues to receive large volumes of applications for the basic police learning development programme through its e-recruitment system,' it said. SAPS noted technical glitches on its website and urged applicants to be patient. 'The SAPS is aware that the website is experiencing a delayed response due to traffic volumes. The technology management services, inclusive of IT experts, are monitoring the volume of applications. Applicants are advised to be patient and continue to refresh the careers page.' Applications are submitted through the SAPS website. Men and women between the ages of 18 and 35 without a criminal record or pending criminal case are urged to apply. The closing date is July 18. Applicants will go through a selection process that involves psychometric testing, integrity assessments, physical fitness assessments, screening and medical evaluation. The trio, Sphiwe Mahlangu, 45, Thomas Baloyi, 41, and Daniel Kubayi, 50, appeared in court on charges of theft of essential infrastructure and will remain in custody pending their next court appearance. The Gauteng Organised Crime Unit's investigation led to the arrest of three municipal employees, according to police. They also said transformer theft is not a new issue in the metro, and while this case involves a large sum specific to Tshwane, smaller transformer thefts have been reported elsewhere. Police expect more arrests as investigations continue. Tshwane district Commissioner, Major General Samuel Thine, said police are making progress because theft of essential infrastructure cripples the country's economy and affects households, leading to electricity shortages when the infrastructure is stolen and diverted. The city said the arrested individuals are employees linked to the incident, which significantly compromised the power infrastructure and security. Municipal spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the arrests are a crucial step towards accountability and deterrence, emphasising that residents deserve uninterrupted services and infrastructure protected from deliberate damage and sabotage.
