India's RPL circuit ‘will be high-quality sevens experience' for Hong Kong

That is the view of Paul John, the head of Hong Kong sevens rugby, who said it was imperative for his charges to acquire more experience outside the handful of do-or-die tournaments they contest every year.
Michael Coverdale, Mak Kwai-chung and Fong Kit-fung are all going to the pioneering Indian-staged Rugby Premier League (RPL), whose six franchise teams will be led by elite coaches and feature marquee international performers.
'Our players will play with and against world-class players, and under world-class coaches, in a completely different environment – which is great for their development on a number of fronts,' John said.
'They'll also mix and train with top players for two weeks before the tournament, so it'll be a high-quality sevens experience.'

Coverdale will play under All Blacks Sevens head coach Tomasi Cama for Delhi Redz. Another New Zealander, DJ Forbes, is in charge of Hyderabad Heroes, where Fong will line up alongside Argentine powerhouse Luciano Gonzalez. Mak's teammates at Bengaluru Bravehearts include the New Zealand trio of Scott Curry, Tone Ng Shiu and Akuila Rokolisoa.

Lionel Messi suffers hamstring injury
Lionel Messi suffers hamstring injury Inter Miami captain Lionel Messi receives treatment during the match against Necaxa at Chase Stadium. Photo: Reuters Lionel Messi suffered an injury and was taken off in the 11th minute of Inter Miami's Leagues Cup penalty shoot-out victory over Mexico's Necaxa on Saturday at Fort Lauderdale's Chase Stadium. The 38-year-old Argentine superstar forward had treatment on his upper right leg, or groin, before making his exit under his own power and walking to the locker room. Messi took the ball and dribbled toward the Necaxa back line, but he stumbled on the edge of the penalty area and ran into Necaxa defender Alexis Pena then tumbled to the ground, pounding the pitch in frustration as the ball was cleared away. Moments later, Messi went to the ground in a seated position, lying on his back briefly until the trainers arrived. He was eventually replaced by Federico Redondo. Inter Miami won 5-4 on penalties after the game ended 2-2 in normal time, with both teams reduced to 10 men. Argentine striker Tomas Badaloni was denied on the decisive penalty kick in the third round of the shoot-out while Rodrigo De Paul, Ben Cremaschi, Jordi Alba, Redondo and Luis Suarez hit penalties for Miami, Uruguayan striker Suarez scoring the decider. Inter Miami Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia scored in the 12th minute, but Herons defender Maximiliano Falcon of Uruguay was shown a red card in the 17th minute. Badaloni netted the equaliser for Necaxa in the 33rd minute to lift the visitors level at half-time, but Necaxa went down to 10 men as well when Cristian Calderon received a red card in the 60th minute. Ricardo Monreal, who came off the Necaxa bench in the 74th minute, scored in the 81st to put the Mexican side ahead only for Spain's Alba to equalise for Miami in the second minute of stoppage time, and send the game to a penalty shoot-out. Ex-Hong Kong athlete swims 360km around Swedish island as part of mental health fight
A former Hong Kong athlete, who said the city was where he 'fell in love with open-water swimming', has swum 360 kilometres around a Swedish island as part of his battle with mental health and to raise awareness of the issue and for nature conservation. Karl Palmqvist, a Swedish national who trained with the Hong Kong Sports Institute's triathlon national development squad as a teenager, completed the 21-day swim around Gotland, Sweden's largest island, on Thursday. But the mammoth achievement comes two years after he was at his 'absolute lowest' following years of injuries, an identity crisis and the constant pressure to perform. 'The way sports are nowadays, you push kids so early on that it's almost the only thing that they're banking on, or in my case, such a big part of my identity,' Palmqvist said. 'And then, when you've almost gone professional or been elite within your sport, and then it's taken away from you due to injuries or mental burnout, we're just left there floating on our own without any tools to be able to work through it. Karl Palmqvist checked himself into a psychiatric ward but has since pulled through. Photo: Anders Klapp Palmqvist moved to Shanghai when he was three years old and relocated to Hong Kong aged 10. He lived in the city for five years before returning to Sweden.

Lamine Yamal takes iconic Barcelona number 10 shirt
Lamine Yamal takes iconic Barcelona number 10 shirt Yamal signed a new deal that will keep him at the La Liga champions for the next six years. Photo: Reuters Young Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has inherited the club's number 10 shirt, previously worn by all-time great Lionel Messi. "Messi made his path and I will make mine," Yamal said at an event at the club shop at the Spotify Camp Nou stadium. "I will work as hard as I can, give everything and try to make those Barca fans who are there happy and those who are at home." The 18-year-old winger, often compared to the Argentine superstar who also came through the club's La Masia youth academy, helped the Catalan giants win a domestic treble last season. Yamal signed a new contract with Barcelona until 2031 in May, becoming one of the best paid players at the club. "I hope to enjoy myself more than last year and make my dreams come true," he said. The teenager added he wanted to win the Champions League with the Catalan giants and also the World Cup with Spain. Yamal has scored 25 goals for the club in more than 100 appearances, making his debut in 2023 at the age of 15 wearing the number 41 shirt. "Barca is my life, I've been here since I was seven, for all kids from La Masia their dream is to make it to the first team and I'm doing it and I have to keep working," said Yamal. "When I was little I dreamed of being at Barca and having this number." After a season wearing the 27, last summer Yamal followed in Messi's footsteps by taking the number 19, which the Argentine wore at the club between 2005 and 2008. Ansu Fati inherited Messi's number 10 shirt in 2021, when the now Inter Miami player left Barca for Paris Saint-Germain. Beset by a series of injuries Fati was unable to fulfil his potential at Barca and signed on loan for Monaco in July. Stars such as Diego Maradona, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo have worn the Barcelona number 10 shirt in the past. "[Messi, Maradona, Ronaldinho] are three legends of football, three legends of this club," said Yamal. "I am grateful for what they gave the club and I will try to continue this legacy." (AFP)
