Lionel Messi suffered an injury and was taken off in the 11th minute of Inter Miami's Leagues Cup penalty shoot-out victory over Mexico's Necaxa on Saturday at Fort Lauderdale's Chase Stadium.
The 38-year-old Argentine superstar forward had treatment on his upper right leg, or groin, before making his exit under his own power and walking to the locker room.
Messi took the ball and dribbled toward the Necaxa back line, but he stumbled on the edge of the penalty area and ran into Necaxa defender Alexis Pena then tumbled to the ground, pounding the pitch in frustration as the ball was cleared away.
Moments later, Messi went to the ground in a seated position, lying on his back briefly until the trainers arrived.
He was eventually replaced by Federico Redondo.
Inter Miami won 5-4 on penalties after the game ended 2-2 in normal time, with both teams reduced to 10 men.
Argentine striker Tomas Badaloni was denied on the decisive penalty kick in the third round of the shoot-out while Rodrigo De Paul, Ben Cremaschi, Jordi Alba, Redondo and Luis Suarez hit penalties for Miami, Uruguayan striker Suarez scoring the decider.
Inter Miami Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia scored in the 12th minute, but Herons defender Maximiliano Falcon of Uruguay was shown a red card in the 17th minute.
Badaloni netted the equaliser for Necaxa in the 33rd minute to lift the visitors level at half-time, but Necaxa went down to 10 men as well when Cristian Calderon received a red card in the 60th minute.
Ricardo Monreal, who came off the Necaxa bench in the 74th minute, scored in the 81st to put the Mexican side ahead only for Spain's Alba to equalise for Miami in the second minute of stoppage time, and send the game to a penalty shoot-out. (AFP)

Messi and Neymar's former Barcelona colleague bringing winning mentality to Kitchee
For Roger Riera, the new Kitchee centre-back, it was both a blessing and a curse that his emergence at Barcelona coincided with the club's greatest era. An awestruck Riera trained with Lionel Messi, Neymar and Andres Iniesta. On the flip side, he could see no way into the Catalans' glittering squad, so he left for Nottingham Forest three months after captaining Barcelona to the 2014 Uefa Youth League title. 'It was always my dream to reach the Barcelona first team, and when we won the youth league it looked great for us, we were looking for the next step,' Riera said. 'But Barcelona were a great team, they were right at the top and it was difficult to reach those levels. Not everyone can do it.' Catalan Riera spent nine years in the club's famed La Masia academy before moving, aged 19. 'We had one playing style, but they teach you a lot,' he said. 'You get used to winning every week, and I've kept that mentality. They instil strong personal values, and you learn about different cultures, because you play with people from around the world.'

Could Lionel Messi finish career in Italy? Indonesian billionaires eye ‘dream' transfer
The president of ambitious Serie A side Como has said signing Lionel Messi would be a 'dream'. The Argentina captain's contract with Inter Miami runs until the end of the 2025 Major League Soccer season and is reportedly in negotiations. Como have the richest owners in Italy in billionaire Indonesian brothers Robert and Michael Hartono, who have ambitious plans. With Cesc Fabregas as manager, they shocked many by finishing 10th following their promotion to the top flight. And club president Mirwan Suwarso, also from Indonesia, outlined the club's vision. 'The brand here is Lake Como and with that, we hope to attract Hollywood stars,' he told La Stampa. 'It's not us who invite them; they come to Como on holiday and ask us if they can come to watch a match.' Cesc Fabregas shouts instructions during Como's friendly against Lille. Photo: AP Keira Knightley, Adrien Brody and Hugh Grant are just some of the A-list Hollywood actors who came to watch Como live last season, while Messi's wife Antonela Roccuzzo was spotted with their three children during the Italian side's pre-season clash with Lille last weekend.
