Mod clothing exhibition set to open in Brighton
An exhibition celebrating the clothing of the mod youth culture in the 1960s is set to open in a city which has close connections with the trend.The In Crowd: Mod Fashion & Style 1958-66 opens at Brighton Museum on 10 May and features outfits designed by Mary Quant, John Stephen and the original Brighton-based mod brand Ben Sherman. The display is curated by Roger K Burton, an expert in vintage fashion, and features rare and early mod outfits drawn from his collection. Mr Burton, who has styled films including Brighton-based Quadrophenia and Absolute Beginners, said the exhibition was "a chance to step into the world of a transformative youth culture that left an indelible mark on fashion and society".
He said: "The Mods rejected the 1950s, favouring sharp tailoring, bold colours, and a sense of modernity that captured the spirit of youth culture. "More than just a fashion statement, they embraced a fresh outlook on life, celebrating youth, freedom, and modernity in ways that continue to inspire today."The exhibition showcases the influential designers who defined the mod movement with sleek miniskirts, sharp suits, and crisp button-down shirts that embodied its forward-thinking spirit. "These garments were statements of individuality, rebellion, and modernity," said Mr Burton.
Hedley Swain, chief executive of Brighton & Hove Museums, said: "This exhibition not only showcases the remarkable craftsmanship and innovation of mod fashion but also celebrates Brighton's unique historical connection to this influential youth movement."Founded in Brighton in 1963, Ben Sherman has become a symbol of sharp British style, favoured by the mod movement for its tailored designs and contemporary aesthetics. The heritage brand will present an "archival installation", Ben Sherman: The Decades, which will run alongside the main exhibition from 23 May.

However, Lorde's surprise gig at Woodies Stage at 11.30am meant she didn't join Charli XCX, leading to some disappointed fans voicing their feelings online. On X (the social network formerly known as Twitter), @ctphonehomee expressed dismay: "So lorde not being here is atrocious??" and @V4MPIRESHAWTY queried: "WHERE IS LORDE". One fan, @begforloves, expressed their surprise: "Now why would Lorde not be there", while @mattyscruff chimed in with: "not the crowd screaming bc they assumed lorde was coming out". @allyallonsy01 echoed the sentiment, stating: "I was hoping lorde was gonna come out". Marilyn Manson Brighton concert cancelled after pressure from campaigners
Heavy metal star Marilyn Manson, has had the first UK concert of his One Assassination Under God Tour cancelled after pressure from campaign groups and an MP. The first leg of the tour was due to kick off at the Brighton Centre on Wednesday, 29 October. Ticketmaster have since informed customers that the event will no longer go ahead as planned and they will be refunded. An online campaign group, No Stage for Abusers, called on the Brighton Centre and Brighton and Hove city council, which owns the venue, to cancel the performance. Four women had sued Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, accusing him of rape, sexual assault and bodily harm. However, after a year-long investigation, the case against him was dropped in January. Prosecutors in California found that the statute of limitations had been exceeded and argued they would not be able to bring charges that prove Warner was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. The identities of the women were not revealed, but Game of Thrones actor Esmé Bianco, who sued Warner in a case that has now been settled, stated that she was part of the criminal investigation. In 2021, Manson's former fiancee, the Westworld actor Evan Rachel Wood, also named him as her abuser for the first time in an Instagram post. Warner has dismissed the allegations as 'falsehoods'. Last week, Green Party MP Siân Berry expressed her concerns about Warner's scheduled performance in her constituency in Brighton, writing an open letter to the leader of Brighton and Hove city council, Bella Sankey. In Berry's letter, which was co-signed by a host of groups and the University of Sussex students' union, she made the case for cancelling the concert, saying it went against 'the city's well-renowned values'. Berry wrote: 'Many survivors in Brighton and Hove, and organisations supporting them, will have serious concerns about this booking and its wider impact on other people visiting the city centre, local residents and the wider community.' She added: 'The council has a responsibility to take action where there are risks of discrimination, harassment and victimisation.' Supporters of Warner point out that Warner has not been found guilty of allegations against him. Others said the decision infringes on freedom of speech. One person told The Argus: 'This is cancel culture, nothing more, and it'll backfire when artists don't add a Brighton and Hove date to their tours and stick to London, which incidentally hasn't banned Marilyn Manson from their city.'
