Yankees takeaways: Lineup goes cold, Carlos Rodon shaky in loss to Tigers in chilly Detroit
DETROIT – 'You like the cold!?'' Tommy Kahnle shouted, greeting some of his old teammates on a frosty Monday afternoon.
Naturally, the always amped-up Kahnle was dressed in a gray Detroit Tigers t-shirt while most well-layered Yankees also sported gaiters and winter caps against the 38-degree chill.

A light snow began to fall just before Casey Mize's first pitch at 3:10 p.m.
'Both teams have to deal with it, it's part of big-league baseball playing in the Northeast and the Midwest,'' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said of the early spring conditions.
On Monday, the Tigers dealt with it a little better, scoring a 6-2 victory before just 14,132 fans – a very sparse crowd to see Aaron Judge and the defending AL champs.
Start times for this entire three-game series were switched from night to day games, due to the cold temps.
And Monday's start was forecast as the warmest of the set.
Tuesday's 1:10 p.m. game is expected to be played in the 30-degree range, with overnight temperatures in the 20s leading into Wednesday's 1:10 p.m. finale.

'Everyone's got a job to do,'' said Boone. 'Doesn't matter if it's 80 and sunny or 40 and drizzly.''

The last time the Tigers and Yankees played, it was 66 degrees in Lakeland - a cool-for-Florida exhibition game on March 21.
For added heat Monday, Boone simmered at plate umpire Bruce Dreckman for his strike zone against starter Carlos Rodon, who made his displeasure known from the mound.
Rodon stared toward home plate as he questioned a third inning walk to No. 8 hitter Jake Rogers.
After walking the No. 9 hitter, Rodon served up a three-run homer to Andy Ibanez for a 3-0 lead, and the Tigers (6-4) advanced to their fourth straight win.

Mize held the Yankees (6-4) to just one run over six innings, while Rodon pitched into the seventh – sometimes operating in a snow-globe atmosphere – and yielded five earned runs.
At least the sun was back out again as Kahnle closed out his old mates in the ninth.

The Marlins (55-55) won all three games against the Yankees (60-52) to reach .500 for the first time since April 15. They became the first MLB team to go from 16 or more games under .500 to a .500 record since the Rays in 2014. Stowers made it 6-1 when he connected on an 0-2 fastball from Brent Headrick, who entered in the fourth with two on after starter Luis Gil (0-1) was lifted 3 1/3 innings into his season debut. Gil, the reigning AL Rookie of the Year, struck out three and surrendered five runs and five hits while issuing four walks in his return from a high-grade lat strain. He threw 77 pitches. Detroit Lions' Hendon Hooker, Kyle Allen looking for better results in battle for backup QB

Hendon Hooker provided a blunt assessment of his first preseason performance. "A zero out of 10," the Detroit Lions quarterback said. "It wasn't to my standards, it wasn't to the team's standards of just being productive and controlling the huddle and making plays." Hooker and Kyle Allen, who are competing for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind starting quarterback Jared Goff, are both looking for vast improvement in the offense's performance when the Lions play at Atlanta on Friday. Detroit committed five turnovers and generated just 197 yards in a 34-7 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers in the Hall of Fame game on Thursday. Allen, who started the game, was 9 of 14 for 91 yards but was intercepted twice. Hooker was 3 of 6 for 18 yards and was picked off once. They'll switch roles on Friday with Hooker playing the first half and Allen taking over after halftime. Durability hasn't been an issue for Goff since he was acquired from the Los Angeles Rams in 2021. He hasn't missed a game the past three seasons. If that streak ends this season, the Lions will need to have a reliable option. They're looking for either Hooker or Allen to establish themselves as the clear backup. "I can tell you both of those guys are, it goes without saying, they're frustrated with the way that went and they both want to improve and get better," coach Dan Campbell said. "And they will." Hooker was selected in the third round of the 2023 draft despite a knee injury suffered late in his college career that turned his rookie season essentially into a redshirt year. Hooker had 58 touchdown passes and five interceptions in two seasons at Tennessee. The 27-year-old Hendon also spent three seasons with Virginia Tech. Hooker made three brief appearances last season, going 6 of 9 for 62 yards. This preseason is pivotal to show he was worthy of his draft status. "Very key. Every play is important," he said. "So just taking advantage of every play, every throw, every decision and just putting my best foot forward every time." Allen, 29, has bounced around the league since making Carolina's roster as an undrafted free agent in 2018. The Lions are the sixth organization he's suited up for and fifth in the past five seasons. He appeared in one game with Pittsburgh last season. Allen has made 19 starts, including 12 of 13 appearances during the 2019 season with the Panthers when he passed for 3,322 yards with 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He was sacked 46 times. The Lions signed him to a one-year, $1.27 million contract with a $100,000 signing bonus in March. The second half against the Falcons gives Allen another extended opportunity to secure his spot on the depth chart. "Obviously (looking to) correct the interceptions and the mistakes, play a little cleaner football," he said after Sunday morning's practice. "Just keep executing the offense, getting more comfortable in it and take it play by play." Hendon has similar goals on Friday. "We've just got to come out and execute," he said. "Point back, period. No excuses and leave it at that."

Marlins sweep Yankees for first time in franchise history in front of record crowd, move to .500

The Miami Marlins' red-hot summer just keeps coming. The Marlins powered to a 7-3 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday, completing a sweep over the Yankees for the first time in franchise history. Miami also hit the milestone in front of a record crowd, with a series attendance of 101,545 setting a franchise record. With the win, Miami also moves to 55-55, hitting .500 for the first time since April. The team dropped to 24-40 in early June, but have won 31 games in the two months since to pull to even. Sunday's win came easily to the Marlins, who took a 3-1 lead after two innings. Then, in the fourth inning, Kyle Stowers hit a three-run homer to bring Miami's lead to 6-1. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a two-run bomb in the seventh to help the Yankees cut into the deficit, but an RBI triple from Jakob Marsee secured the 7-3 win. The series was a poor showing from the Yankees, who dropped the first game 13-12 after a trio of relievers blew a 9-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh. All three pitchers — Jake Bird, David Bednar and Camilo Doval — were recent acquisitions ahead of the MLB trade deadline. The bad luck continued on Saturday, as the Yankees were caught sleeping while Miami powered to a 2-0 win. Then, on Sunday, the Marlins secured the historic sweep. Miami will keep trying to ride that momentum through the next series, a homestand against the AL West-leading Houston Astros. The Yankees, meanwhile, will lick their wounds on the way to playing the Texas Rangers in Arlington.
