Joe Rogan references Ilia Topuria to highlight that it's 'an amazing time for the sport'
Several super fights such as Islam Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria and Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall have either failed to materialize or are yet to materialize, leaving UFC fans frustrated.
But popular podcast host and UFC commentator Rogan thinks skill and talent-wise, MMA is the best it's ever been. He used undefeated, former UFC featherweight champion Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) as an example.
"Ilia Topuria, who's fighting Charles Oliveira at the end of the month – that guy is insane. That guy has knocked out two of the greatest featherweights of all time: (Alexander) Volkanovski and Max Holloway," Rogan said on a recent episode of his "Joe Rogan Experience" podcast. "Nobody could knock those guys out at featherweight before. He did, and he made it look easy. He's just on another level from everybody. Now he's moving up to 155 pounds. He decided he cleared out that division, and he's moving up.
"There's guys like that, their level is above everybody else's level, and with Ilia, it's everything. It's his submissions, his kicks, his punches, everything. He can do anything. He does everything perfect. All his technique is perfect. He's f*cking driven and ultra confident. This is an amazing time for the sport, man. It's a crazy time because these guys that are coming in with like one fight in the UFC, they look like world-class contenders right away."
Topuria takes on Charles Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) for the vacant lightweight title in the UFC 317 main event on June 28 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+).

Giannis Antetokounmpo's future with the Milwaukee Bucks remains uncertain, as fans continue to wait for his decision regarding the upcoming season. With all the movement going on around the NBA, ESPN's Shams Charania appeared on First Take on Monday to give an update on the 30-year-old Bucks star's status. While Antetokounmpo seems to be in no hurry to decide, the NBA insider claims that teams are on the prowl in case he becomes available on the trade market. "There are multiple teams I know of that are literally waiting right now on what decision Giannis Antetokounmpo makes," Charania said. "Waiting to see, does he actually hit the market? Training camps don't start till mid-September." "There have been examples in the past. Kyrie Irving was traded to the Boston Celtics in August when he got moved. Damian Lillard was actually traded to Milwaukee in September. So there are deals that happen late in summer." The Bucks fell to the Celtics in the second round in 2022. Since then, they have been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in each of the past three years. Rumors about the uncertainty of Antetokounmpo's future in Cream City escalated this past season following their early elimination against Indiana. Additionally, the Bucks waived point guard Damian Lillard after two seasons while he deals with an Achilles tear that he sustained against the Pacers in late April. Since then, Lillard signed a three-year deal to return to the Portland Trail Blazers, where he played for the first 11 years of his career. Charania noted that a big factor in Antetokounmpo remaining with the Bucks is the likelihood of winning a second title with the team. "There is nothing set in stone about whether or not Giannis Antetokounmpo stays in Milwaukee or whether he wants to leave elsewhere," Charania shared. "He's been evaluating his future this entire offseason. I reported way back in mid-May that he is open-minded about whether his best fit is in Milwaukee or in a trade. That process has been continuing. There's been some conversations he's having with his inner circle. "The one big question that's been surrounding Giannis Antetokounmpo, surrounding his camp, is can he win another championship? Is this Bucks roster built for this upcoming season, for him to win his second championship?" With teams being linked to him, Antetokounmpo recently proclaimed his love for Milwaukee in an interview with internet personality iShowSpeed (real name Darren Watskin Jr.). "A lot of people are trying to convince me to play there," Antetokounmpo told Watkins when asked about moving teams. Watkins then asked if he plans to stay in Milwaukee, to which he replied, "Probably." "We'll see, probably. I love Milwaukee," he continued. Antetokounmpo has been in Milwaukee since the Bucks selected him with the 15th pick in the 2013 NBA Draft. Upon his arrival, the Bucks nurtured him to become a nine-time All-Star, two-time league MVP and franchise player. With suspense surrounding his time with the Bucks, Antetokounmpo remains on his three-year deal, which he signed in 2023. His $186 million contract was meant to keep Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee through the duration of Lillard's deal before his abrupt dismissal. The current deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, per Spotrac. Antetokounmpo averaged 30.4 points and 11.9 rebounds per game this past season as the Bucks finished fifth in the East with a 48-34 record.

Ohio State vs Texas will be first season-opening No. 1 vs No. 2 game in history
Ohio State and Texas will face off in a historic season opener as the first time in college football history the top two teams will meet in Week 1. Ohio State's upcoming season-opening game against Texas was always going to be a blockbuster affair. It's two College Football Playoff contenders meeting each other right out of the gate. It's the place to be in Week 1, and the whole college football world knows it. ESPN's College GameDay will be there. So will FOX's Big Noon Kickoff. And the game that everyone is looking forward to just got more historic. With the release of the preseason USA TODAY US LBM Coaches Poll, the game will also be a battle between the top two teams in the country. Those games are rare, certainly, but not unheard of. While the BCS all-but guaranteed them occurring at least once a year in the postseason, they happen an average of once every few years in the regular season. Perhaps the more common occurrences in the postseason will make them less special (though with the College Football Playoff now at 12 teams and possibly expanding further, the likelihood of such games has decreased), but they're still rare and monumental occurrences in the regular season. What makes the upcoming Ohio State vs Texas game so special, though, is that it will be the first time in history that such a game will open the season. That's right. Since college football polls started in 1936 (AP Poll; the Coaches Poll started in 1950), there has never been a No. 1 vs No. 2 game in Week 1. It remains to be seen if the AP Poll will agree with the top two (those rankings debut next Monday), but with the US LBM Coaches Poll out, it's guaranteed. Of course, late-season No. 1 vs No. 2 games mean more, because we know a lot more about the teams when those rankings are given. Preseason rankings are an educated guess, and can end up wrong--due to injuries, other issues, or just being wrong. Still, it's very cool to be part of history. Another interesting part of history? There has only been Week 2 game in college football history between the top two teams in the rankings. That game came back in 2006. The teams competing? Ohio State and Texas. Coach Javier Mendez: Islam Makhachev vs. Ilia Topuria 'the No. 1 fight to make' in UFC
The building blocks for a potential super fight between Islam Makhachev and Ilia Topuria are being put in place. There's no doubt a clash between the two current pound-for-pound bests would be big for the sport, but how big exactly? Makhachev's long-time coach, Javier Mendez, thinks a championship bout between Makhachev and Topuria is the biggest fight the UFC could make today. This wasn't the case a few months ago, as Mendez told MMA Junkie last year that Topuria had ways to go to be at the level of his student. However, since those comments, Topuria defended the UFC featherweight title, by becoming the first to knockout Max Holloway, and then moved up to lightweight to knock out Charles Oliveira and claim the belt, which was vacated by Makhachev himself. "I think every fan wants to watch this fight," Mendez told Hablemos MMA in Spanish. "It's the No. 1 fight, No. 1. The other one was Jon Jones vs. Tom Aspinall – that was No. 1. But right now, if Islam wins, the No. 1 fight to make is Topuria vs. Islam." Makhachev vacated his UFC lightweight title earlier this year, and is expected to challenge UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena in the coming months. No official date or location has been announced by the UFC. Should Makhachev become a two-division UFC champion, just like Topuria did in June, Mendez would love to see a clash between the two – whether it's at 155 or 170 pounds. "La Leyenda" has been very vocal about wanting to fight Makhachev and has chased him for some time now. He's also made some bold claims, saying he could submit Makhachev, who's one of the most dominant grappler's MMA has ever seen. Some would be bothered by Topuria's comments, but Mendez very much likes what's going on. "I like what he's been doing," Mendez said. "He's doing a good job at getting people to want to watch the fight. The more Ilia does, the more people want to see this fight. I like everything he's doing as a fighter. He's very strong and doesn't care about the weight. I think now it's a great fight for us. The first thing Islam wanted was a legacy fight – he wanted the welterweight title. Now if we win the welterweight title, we can go down or he can come up. That's what I say, but if the UFC doesn't like it, it's not happening. But first we need to win."
