Judge declares mistrial on Harvey Weinstein rape charge
Justice Curtis Farber ended the nearly seven-week trial after the jury foreperson refused to continue deliberations, following multiple days of reported dissension among jurors that at times was aired in the courtroom.
Prosecutors said they will try Weinstein a third time on the charge of third-degree rape, over his alleged mistreatment of the aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013.
Justice Farber said the case will proceed to trial, over the objections of Weinstein's lawyer Arthur Aidala, and set a hearing for 2 July.
73-year-old Weinstein had pleaded not guilty and has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex.
He faces up to 25 years in prison for his conviction on a charge of first-degree criminal sexual act, stemming from his alleged assault of former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006.
Weinstein was also acquitted of the same charge over his alleged assault in 2002 of Kaja Sokola, then a 16-year-old aspiring actress.
He is separately appealing a 2022 rape conviction in California, for which he was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Weinstein's downfall began in 2017 and helped spark the #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful men.
A different jury in the Manhattan court had found Weinstein guilty in 2020 of raping Ms Mann and sexually assaulting Ms Haley, but New York state's highest court overturned that conviction last year.
More than 100 women have accused him of misconduct.
The mistrial came one day after the jury foreperson told Justice Farber that other jurors were shouting at and threatening him for refusing to change his vote on the rape count. The foreperson did not indicate publicly how he planned to vote, and Justice Farber sent jurors home to cool off.
In closing arguments on 3 June, the prosecution told the 12 jurors that the evidence showed how Weinstein used his power and influence to trap and abuse women.
The defence countered that the accusers lied on the witness stand out of spite after their consensual sexual encounters with the Oscar-winning producer failed to result in Hollywood stardom.
Weinstein, who has had many health problems in recent years and attended the retrial in a wheelchair, co-founded the Miramax studio, whose hit movies included such Academy Award winners as "Shakespeare in Love" and "Pulp Fiction."
Weinstein's own eponymous film studio filed for bankruptcy in March 2018, five months after sexual misconduct accusations against him became widely publicised.

Nile Rodgers guest-curates at new David Bowie Centre in London
Chic star Nile Rodgers has guest-curated a display for the new David Bowie Centre, including personal correspondence between the two singers. London's V&A Museum, which is behind the new David Bowie Centre, said Rodgers has also selected a bespoke Peter Hall suit worn by Bowie during the Serious Moonlight Tour for the Let's Dance album. Photographs of Bowie, Rodgers, and guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan recording Let's Dance in New York will also feature. The David Bowie Centre will open within the museum's new East Storehouse in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, in Stratford, east London, on 13 September, where it will host items including costumes worn during the singer's Ziggy Stardust period. Rodgers said: "My creative life with David Bowie provided the greatest success of his incredible career, but our friendship was just as rewarding. "Our bond was built on a love of the music that had both made and saved our lives." Rodgers produced Bowie's single Let's Dance and the 1983 album of the same name. He also produced Bowie's 1993 album Black Tie White Noise, and the personal correspondence in the exhibition relates to the latter. Brit Award-winning indie rock band The Last Dinner Party have also curated part of the exhibition, describing Bowie as a "constant source of inspiration to us". Their items include Bowie's elaborate handwritten lyrics for his song Win and notes and set lists for his 1976 Isolar tour. The band said: "David Bowie continues to inspire generations of artists like us to stand up for ourselves. "It was such a thrill to explore Bowie's archive and see first-hand the process that went into his world-building and how he created a sense of community and belonging for those that felt like outcasts or alienated - something that's really important to us in our work too." Access to the David Bowie Centre will be free, with tickets released nearer its opening. The David Bowie Archive, which boasts more than 90,000 items, was acquired by the V&A with the help of the David Bowie Estate, the Blavatnik Family Foundation, and Warner Music Group. The centre will be spread across three zones, which will include curated displays, audiovisual installations, and quieter study areas, allowing visitors to view the Bowie archive on their own, from musical instruments to stage models. Small displays will tell the stories behind the singer's albums and also look at his multi-dimensional creative approach, including unrealised projects, collaborations, and influences. The East Storehouse opened at the end of May and features the Order An Object initiative, allowing visitors to pre-book to see an item from its entire collection.

Ireland star Matt Doherty 'distraught' following the tragic death of Diogo Jota
Ireland star Matt Doherty has said he is 'distraught' for the family of Diogo Jota following his tragic death this morning. Doherty and Jota were previously teammates at Wolverhampton Wanderers before both departing in 2020, and the Irish defender took to social media to pay tribute. Doherty shared a photograph of the pair in their Wolves days and added he 'Can't believe this'. "I remember exactly what you were saying to me. Can't believe this. What a special player and person. Distraught for all your family and friends." Jota joined Wolves on loan back in 2017 when he played all but two games in their Championship-winning campaign before signing on a permanent deal that summer. He would go on to make over 100 appearances for the club before earning a big-money move to Liverpool. The Portuguese star tragically lost his life in a car accident in northwest Spain on Thursday morning, leaving the world of football reeling from the news. He was in a Lamborghini with his brother Andre when the vehicle spun off the road and became engulfed in flames. The tragedy unfolded when one of the tyres burst as the car attempted to overtake another vehicle on the A-52, according to local police, near 70 miles west of Valladolid. The crash happened at approximately 12.40am. Fire services tackled the fire that also affected nearby vegetation, working alongside emergency responders and the Civil Guard. Medical teams were quick to arrive but pronounced the Jota brothers dead at the scene. A representative for the Civil Guard in Zamora stated: "The investigation into the crash is being carried out by Civil Guard traffic officers. We believe the car suffered a blowout from the marks on the road. The full police report once it is completed will be submitted to a duty court in Zamora which has launched an ongoing judicial investigation into this crash."

More info It's Rod Stewart's time to move over, because Paul Mescal is stealing the spotlight post-Glastonbury Festival after he appeared in Instagram pictures cosying up to another star. The BAFTA-winning actor, aged 29, has long been rumoured to be in a relationship with 'That's So True' songstress Gracie Abrams, who's 25. Fans have even dedicated an Insta account to track their every romantic movement. But now @popculture on Instagram has confirmed it — Gracie Abrams has gone public with the Normal People star with a telling post on her profile. The page declared: "Their love is officially on the grid. Gracie Abrams has finally made her romance with Paul Mescal Instagram official". In a carousel of photos from the music festival, which took place between June 25 and 29, the US singer posted a candid photo chilling next to the Gladiator II star signalling that things are official a year after whispers of a romance first surfaced. Gracie wasn't just at the festival for fun - she dazzled audiences with her debut set, crooning fan favourites like I Love You, I'm Sorry, That's So True, and Close To You, plus a rousing rendition of The Cure's Just Like Heaven. After electrifying the crowd, Gracie hit up Instagram to share snapshots and her feelings, expressing: "Glastonbury just thank you so much. I will never ever stop pinching myself that we got to do this". Paul and Grace might've been caught sharing a kiss previously, but this latest loved-up display indicates their bond might just be stronger than anyone anticipated. Gracie's Instagram has been buzzing with comments, with one fan writing: "YOU AND PAUL HELLLLOOOOOOO?????" (Image: Getty Images) Another eager follower penned: "HARDD LAUNCHHHH???? HELLOOOOO," and was mirrored by an Instagram user who commented: "Hard launch I'm obsessed". Meanwhile, someone else noticed: "They've been together forever," while another enthused, "I love this vibe. I love you. I love that you're having such a good time". Grace also received heaps of praises from followers calling her "gorgeous" and expressing being fans for "ages". Over on Reddit, some users were lamenting the non-romantic reality between Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul. Daisy and Paul stole hearts as Marianne and Connell in the television hit Normal People, adapted from Sally Rooney's celebrated novel, released in 2020. Their compelling on-screen chemistry sparked a flurry of speculation about their real-life connection. In truth, Daisy and Paul have always maintained they share a deep friendship, not a romantic entanglement. The pair have recounted in interviews the profound trust and closeness that developed through their deeply emotional and intimate on-screen roles. Despite pursuing their acting paths separately, the bond they share as companions and former co-stars endures.
