UP ATS seeks custody of Chhangur Baba, Jamaluddin in money laundering activities

The Uttar Pradesh anti-terrorism squad (ATS) has filed a fresh application seeking police custody remand (PCR) of Jalaluddin Shah alias Chhangur Baba, 78, and his key associate Naveen Rohra alias Jamaluddin, 45, in connection with an alleged religious conversion and money laundering racket in Balrampur, officials confirmed on Saturday. This is the second remand application for Chhangur Baba, who was earlier taken into custody along with Naveen's wife Neetu Rohra alias Nasreen. (Sourced) This is the second remand application for Chhangur Baba, who was earlier taken into custody along with Naveen's wife Neetu Rohra alias Nasreen. A senior ATS official said the application was submitted to the Lucknow ATS court on Thursday and is likely to be heard on Monday. If allowed, the remand would facilitate further interrogation regarding alleged offshore shell companies, foreign funding, and suspected money laundering linked to the case. According to the official, Chhangur Baba is the alleged mastermind of the racket, accused of targeting Hindu girls across Balrampur and other districts. The gang allegedly received over ₹100 crore in foreign funding over the past three years. The official further stated that Naveen Rohra played a crucial role in the operations, allegedly participating in conversion activities and financial transactions. His wife, Neetu, was also allegedly involved in executing the activities. The ATS began investigating the racket after an FIR was registered on November 16, 2024. The Enforcement Directorate took up a parallel probe on July 8, 2025, to examine financial transactions and assets. Chhangur Baba and Neetu were arrested on July 5. Earlier, Mehboob, 45, son of Chhangur Baba, and Naveen were held on April 8, 2025. Rashid Shah, 40, from Utraula in Balrampur, was arrested on July 17, followed by the arrests of Sabroz and Sahabuddin on July 18. Two other accused, Ramzan and Idul Islam, are still absconding. In a related development, a court clerk, Rajesh Kumar Upadhyaya, was arrested on July 19 for alleged connivance. Upadhyaya was the first person to be arrested despite his name not appearing in the accused column of the FIR.

Agra conversion racket: Girls lured via social media, linked to Pakistan, say police

Agra police investigating an alleged religious conversion racket on Saturday said that several rescued girls were found to be in contact with individuals in Pakistan who discussed Islamic beliefs and allegedly aimed to convert them. Some of the girls were reportedly influenced by Kashmiri women who criticised Hinduism and promoted Islam as part of the larger network's efforts. Arrested accused Abdul Rehman aka Rehman Chacha (Sourced) 'We have interrogated 14 arrested individuals and spoken to the rescued girls. It was found that they were in contact with people in Pakistan, who spoke to them about Islam, and with some girls in Kashmir who reportedly influenced them to adopt the religion,' Agra police commissioner Deepak Kumar said. According to officials, Pakistani individuals identified as Tanveer Ahmed and Sahil Adeem were frequently in touch with the girls through social media platforms. 'The network targeted youth, particularly those involved in online gaming, and used encrypted platforms and foreign contacts to push conversion,' a senior police officer said. The racket, according to the police, was operated by two converts, Abdul Rehman alias Rehman Chacha, earlier known as Mahendra Pal, and Ayesha, formerly SB Krishna, who are now in custody. 12 other accused arrested so far have allegedly confirmed their association with them. One accused, Rehman Qureshi, allegedly raised funds through crowdfunding and maintained transactions in cryptocurrency and foreign currency with individuals based in the Gaza Strip, according to the police. Officials further revealed that at least three members of the group were proficient with the dark web and communicated through encrypted apps and coded signals to avoid detection. According to police officials, girls allegedly targeted by the network were rescued from Dehradun, Bareilly, Aligarh, Jhajjar, and Rohtak. Police said the victims are being interviewed to gather further details. Last week, Agra police rescued a woman from Haryana and another from Uttarakhand. The latter, aged 21, gave her statement before a magistrate in Agra under Section 183 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). She is now considered the main witness in the case.

Closely monitoring situation: India on Thailand-Cambodia clashes

New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) As military clashes between Thailand and Cambodia continued, India on Saturday said it is closely monitoring the unfolding situation and hoped for cessation of hostilities. At least 32 people have been killed and nearly 1,50,000 displaced in the border clashes between the two Southeast Asian countries that erupted on Thursday. In its reaction to the conflict, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) advised Indian travellers in the region to contact the respective embassies in the two countries for any assistance. 'We are closely monitoring the situation along the border between Cambodia and Thailand," MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said. 'India has close and friendly relations with both countries and hopes that both sides will take measures for a cessation of hostilities and prevention of further escalation," he said. The Indian embassies in Thailand and Cambodia have already issued separate advisories for Indian travellers. The Indian mission in the Thai capital urged all Indian travellers to check updates from authorities in the country before visiting tourist attractions in troubled areas. The Indian embassy in Phnom Penh also advised Indian citizens in Cambodia to avoid travelling to border areas. 'In view of the ongoing clashes at the Cambodia-Thailand border, Indian nationals are advised to avoid travelling to the border areas," it said in a post on social media.
