"Constitutional body should not turn into party office," TMC slams ECI on revision in electoral rolls of Bihar

New Delhi [India], June 28 (ANI): Following the decision of the Election Commission of India to revise the electoral roll ahead of Bihar's elections, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O' Brien on Saturday stated that in the desperation to change or attempt to change things, one does desperate things.
'TMC has the highest regard for the Election Commission of India as a constitutional body, but the constitutional body should not turn into the branch office of the BJP. Why is this exercise being suddenly done right now? We have evidence that it is being done now because the latest BJP's internal survey for Bengal shows the BJP will get 46 to 49 seats in Bengal Assembly polls. In desperation to change or attempt to change things, you do these desperate things...' the TMC MP said in a press conference.
He further stated that the ECI was conducting an exercise called the special intensive revision of the electoral roll in Bihar, which would also be followed in West Bengal.
'The ECI is conducting an exercise called special intensive revision of the electoral roll starting in Bihar, and then they said they'll follow it up in Bengal. Under this, new and existing voters have to submit proof of birth & birthplace for those born before July 1987. Proof of birth & birthplace for self and one parent for those born between July 1987 to December 2004. Proof of birth & birthplace for self and both parents for those born after December 2004. If these documents are not submitted within a month, your name will be deleted from the voter list,' Brien said.
Derek O' Brien further stated that the EC was trying to bring back NRC in from the back door.
'The EC (Election Commission) is trying to bring the NRC in from the back door. In 1935 under the Nazis, you were supposed to be given an ancestor pass. Some proof of paper to show that you are an Indian citizen is this the new version of that Nazi Ancestor Pass?... All the INDIA bloc parties will take this up in and outside Parliament...' he added. Lucknow, June 28 (UNI) Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) have opposed any move by the BJP to amend the Constitution to remove the words "Secular" and "Socialist" from the Preamble of the Constitution. Both the parties threatened to launch an agitation if a "conspiracy was hatched to amend the Constitution". BSP supremo Mayawati while talking to reporters here today warned the BJP and the Congress over the debate on the Constitution. She said that it seems that the BSP will have to raise its voice against these parties across the country. Mayawati said that Babasaheb Ambedkar had given a "humanitarian" Constitution to the country by spending his entire life. "But, the first Congress party and now the BJP government never implemented it with full devotion. Both parties and their supporters mostly emphasised the ideology of their respective party. Unnecessary changes were made from time to time in the constitution," she alleged. "Anyway, all the words used in the Indian Constitution and its Preamble, they satisfy the soul of the country and have been implemented in the country only after much understanding, long and deep thinking and now it is not right to tamper with them as it will be grossly inappropriate," she added. BSP chief Mayawati alleged that "there is something else in the heart of both parties and something else on their tongue". Mayawati said that parties should rise above their narrow thought and avoid tampering with the Constitution. BSP supremo also said that politics in the name of language going on in many states of the country is not good. "All languages should be respected," she said. On the issue of voters list controversy in Bihar, Mayawati said the Election Commission should clarify its position and the political parties should be taken into confidence before launching any new decision. Reacting on the rape of a student in Kolkata, she said that women are not completely safe anywhere in the entire country, including West Bengal. In this matter too, the central and all state governments must pay attention, she said. Meanwhile, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said here today that, 'Those opposing reservations are also opposing socialism and secularism words in the Constitution. The BJP had opposed these principles since its inception. Today, they continue spreading hatred because they cannot attack the Constitution directly. So they oppose secularism and socialism instead.' Akhilesh Yadav further said that, "The excuse for the two words is actually the goal of the BJP and their fellow colleagues to remove the entire Constitution." Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a conversation with Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the Indian Astronaut, who made a new record by becoming the first Indian to go to the International Space Station (ISS). The chat took place through video conferencing and was streamed live. Shubhanshu Shukla is currently on a space mission, orbiting 400 kilometres above the Earth. Here are the five things PM Modi and Shubhanshu Shukla talked about: 1- 'Hearts Of 140 Crore Indians…' The initial thing that PM Modi told the astronaut was, 'You may be far from us, but the hearts of 140 crore Indians beat with you,' and congratulated Shubhanshu for raising the nation's pride globally. 'Your name itself carries the word 'Shubh' (auspicious). And your journey symbolises the direction in which 'New India' is heading,' he said. 2- PM Modi's Carrot Halwa Question The Prime Minister asked whether the carrot halwa that Shubhanshu Shukla carried from India had been shared with his fellow astronauts. The astronaut said that he brought along several traditional Indian delicacies to the space station, including carrot halwa, moong dal halwa, and aam ras. He expressed his intent to offer his international colleagues a taste of India's rich culinary heritage. Shukla also informed PM Modi that the astronauts all sat together and enjoyed the dishes, which were very well received. 3- 16 Sunrise And Sunset The PM, stating that circumambulation, or 'parikrama', has been a revered Indian tradition for centuries, said that Shukla now had the rare honour of performing 'parikrama' of Mother Earth herself. PM Modi inquired which part of the Earth Shubhanshu might be orbiting over at that moment. Responding to that, the astronaut said a short while earlier, he had seen through the window that they were passing over Hawaii. He shared that they complete 16 orbits a day, witnessing 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets from space, an experience that continues to amaze him. 4- Did Shubhanshu Shukla Strap His Feet? Highlighting that Shubhanshu Shukla was the first Indian to be on board the ISS, the Prime Minister enquired with him about the contrast between his rigorous preparation on Earth and the actual conditions aboard the space station. The astronaut shared that despite knowing about zero gravity and the nature of experiments in advance, the reality in orbit was entirely different He remarked that the human body becomes so accustomed to gravity that even the smallest tasks in microgravity become unexpectedly complex. He humorously noted that during the conversation, he had to strap his feet down—otherwise, he would just float away. 5- Experiments In Space PM Modi asked whether any of the space experiments being conducted would benefit the agriculture or health sector in the future. Shubhanshu Shukla shared that, for the first time, Indian scientists have designed seven unique experiments which he has taken to the space station. He informed that the first experiment, scheduled for that day, focuses on stem cells and explained that in the absence of gravity, the body experiences muscle loss, and the experiment seeks to test whether specific supplements can prevent or delay this loss. He highlighted that the outcome of this study could directly help elderly people on Earth who face age-related muscle degeneration. Shubhanshu further stated that another experiment focuses on the growth of microalgae. He remarked that though microalgae are small in size, they are highly nutritious. He noted that if methods can be developed to grow them in larger quantities based on the findings in space, it could significantly aid food security on Earth. He underlined that one major advantage of conducting experiments in space is the accelerated pace of biological processes, enabling researchers to obtain results much faster than on Earth. Axiom 4 Mission Axiom 4 mission aboard the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft successfully docked at the ISS on Thursday. The Dragon spacecraft was ahead of schedule, autonomously docking at 4:05 pm (IST) to the space-facing port of the space station's Harmony module. As per ANI, former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation) astronaut Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, ESA (European Space Agency) astronauts Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski of Poland, and Tibor Kapu of Hungary lifted off at Noon IST on June 25, on the SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. The Axiom-4 team will remain aboard the ISS for up to 14 days, engaging in science experiments, outreach, and commercial work.

Congress says the BJP is delaying implementing 27% OBC reservation in Madhya Pradesh
Accusing the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of being against the Backward Classes, the Congress on Saturday (June 28 2025), alleged that the BJP government in Madhya Pradesh has been wilfully delaying passing on the benefits of 27% reservation in State government jobs and institutions despite a law enacted by the State Assembly. The party demanded immediate implementation of 27% reservation for the OBCs in Madhya Pradesh as it has been categorically cleared by the Supreme Court of India as well. Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters, senior party leaders, including former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, AICC in-charge for Madhya Pradesh Harish Chaudhary, MP Congress chief Jitu Patwari, and the head of the Congress's OBC department Anil JaiHind, said the delay in implementing the reservation is revealing the State government's anti-reservation and anti-Backward Class mindset. Mr. Chaudhary said in 1994, the Congress government had provided 14% reservation to the OBCs and subsequently, in 2003, proposed the quota to be raised to 27%. However, since then, the BJP has been in power in the State and it never took any decision to implement the decision. When the Kamal Nath government was formed in December 2018, it brought an Ordinance to provide 27% reservation for OBCs in 2019. 'The BJP challenged it in court, which then directed that a law be enacted on the matter. We subsequently got the Bill passed in the Assembly. But the BJP formed the government again, and it did not implement the reservation,' Mr. Chaudhary said, adding that the pleas against the 27% quota were by the High Court and the Supreme Court as well. Chhattisgarh issue Mr. Baghel said that the Congress government in Chhattisgarh had unanimously passed a law in December 2022 for providing 27% reservation to the OBCs, but the Bill is still to get the nod of the Governor. 'This is because the BJP does not want to provide 27% reservation to the OBCs,' the former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister said. 'We will not only fight the issue legally, but will raise it publicly to build pressure on the BJP government to implement it,' he added. Mr. Patwari said that it was strange that Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he belonged to the OBCs but was not providing the community its rightful due. 'The OBC Chief Ministers of MP belonging to the BJP, including Uma Bharti, Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Mohan Yadav, have all betrayed their own community,' he said.
