SA makes history: First-ever green hydrogen qualifications approved
The development of these qualifications stems directly from CHIETA's Vision 2025, which was launched in 2021 and identified green hydrogen as a strategic focus area to drive South Africa's energy transition. Vision 2025 recognised the transformative potential of green hydrogen in powering inclusive industrial growth, supporting decarbonisation, and promoting sustainability.
These programmes are the first of their kind in the country, developed to equip learners with critical technical and operational skills needed in the green hydrogen value chain from production and storage to transportation and technology innovation.
On 30 April 2025, the QCTO formally approved three new National Qualifications Framework (NQF): Level 4 programmes:

'Vision 2025 marked a turning point for CHIETA as we committed to leading skills development for the emerging green economy. This wasn't just about creating Qualifications, it was about future-proofing our workforce and ensuring no one is left behind in the energy transition,' said CHIETA CEO, Yershen Pillay.
Following the strategic direction outlined in Vision 2025, CHIETA initiated the development of these programmes in close collaboration with industry leaders, training providers, technical experts, and government stakeholders. The result: three nationally recognised qualifications designed to meet the real demands of a fast-evolving green hydrogen sector.
Why Green Hydrogen? Why Now?
Green hydrogen produced through the electrolysis of water using renewable energy has emerged globally as a game-changing clean energy source. In South Africa, it is seen as a catalyst for industrial growth, export potential, and decarbonisation.
South Africa's rich renewable energy resources and strong chemical industry base place it in a unique position to lead the continent's green hydrogen revolution. However, without the right skills in place, this opportunity could be lost.
'These programmes ensure we don't just talk about a just energy transition, we deliver it. We're building the technical pipeline needed to support a green economy, while opening up career opportunities for youth, artisans, and operators across multiple industries,' said Pillay.
The three QCTO-approved qualifications will prepare learners for a range of roles in green hydrogen production, storage, transport, and technology. Learners will be equipped to:
Operate and maintain hydrogen production and storage equipment
Coordinate technical activities and logistics
Monitor environmental impacts and performance of hydrogen technologies
Understand safety, regulatory, and industry standards
Graduates will be ready for roles such as operators, artisans, maintenance technicians, and logistics professional across energy, transport, manufacturing, and chemical sectors. With QCTO approval secured, Skills Development Providers (SDPs) can now apply for programme accreditation. Once accredited, SDPs can begin offering the programmes, with CHIETA providing
strategic guidance and support. CHIETA is also embarking on a national awareness campaign to promote uptake, build training infrastructure, and ensure access across provinces. The goal: create a strong, inclusive workforce ready to support South Africa's green hydrogen ambitions.
The green hydrogen economy is not a distant dream it is unfolding now. These CHIETA-led programmes represent a decisive step toward a cleaner, more equitable energy future, rooted in skills development, sector transformation, and national progress.

RMI launches Project Dineo to train young South Africans for a career in the motor industry
Project Dineo aims to attract more youths to the automotive industry. Image: Supplied Youth unemployment remains a crisis of epic proportions in South Africa. The most recent figures, from the first quarter of 2025, showed that joblessness among those under 34 surged to 46.1%, from 44.6% in the previous quarter. And yet skills shortages prevail, particularly among the trades. For instance, South Africa currently trains just 13,000 artisans per year, well below the national target of 30,000, according to BluLever Education. A new initiative called Project Dineo aims to attract more youths to the automotive industry by providing a practical pathway to 100 learners per year for the next three years. The project is a partnership between the Retail Motor Industry (RMI), merSETA and the Presidency, and it will focus on empowering women, people with disabilities and youth from disadvantaged backgrounds. Launched at the MIWA Motor Mech Show at the Port Rex Technical High School in East London over the weekend, the programme will provide high-quality training through top public TVET colleges and accredited learning providers. This will be complemented by hands-on apprentices at RMI-approved employers. 'The combination of formal education and real-world exposure sets learners on a direct route to full employment in high-demand trades such as motor and diesel mechanics, panel beating, spray painting, and more,' says RMI National Training Director Louis van Huyssteen. It is a future-facing profession and a real career of choice,' van Huyssteen added. Sabelo Buthelezi, special project director at the Department of Higher Education said participation by private sector employers was essential for providing today's youth with the necessary skills. 'Without workplace experience, an apprenticeship remains incomplete. Without employer mentors, apprentices lack the real-world feedback that makes learning come alive. Chieta welcomes SIU investigation into discretionary grant funding

Image: Supplied The Chemical Industries Education and Training Authority (Chieta) is taking credit for the Special Investigating Unit's (SIU's) probe into its affairs and the disbursement of millions of rand in discretionary grant funding. The SIU investigation was authorised by President Cyril Ramaphosa and is expected to zoom in on the allocation of discretionary grant funding to entities in which Chieta employees or officials may have had undisclosed or unauthorised interests and the extent of any benefit derived by the employees or officials. Chieta, whose annual budget is over R735 million for 2025/26, is expected to disburse R446m in discretionary grants in the current financial year. It has welcomed the presidential proclamation authorising the SIU to investigate certain historical matters related to the entity. Video Player is loading. 'In 2019, in line with our commitment to ethical governance and accountability, Chieta commissioned an independent forensic investigation into concerns related to past procurement processes,' the sector education and training authority explained. It added that this included the procurement of information technology and audit services. 'The organisation subsequently submitted the findings to the SIU and, in 2021, opened a criminal case involving a former employee, with a board directive to recover misappropriated funds,' the entity said. Chieta indicated that this demonstrated its values in action, accountability, transparency, and respect for its public mandate. 'Our strong governance culture has since been affirmed through consistent clean audits and a 100% performance rating from the Auditor-General. 'We wish to assure stakeholders and the public that the investigation does not relate to current leadership or programmes,' stated Chieta. The authority also gave assurances that its work, including the national rollout of Smart Skills Centres, will continue uninterrupted and aligned with its vision for inclusive skills development. The SIU will also probe any losses or actual or potential prejudice suffered by Chieta or the State as a result of such fraud, corruption, irregularities, malpractices or maladministration, including the causes of such fraud, corruption, irregularities, malpractices or maladministration. Additionally, the corruption-busting unit will look into the procurement of, or contracting for information, and communications technology services and auditing services by or on behalf of Chieta and payments made.
