Politics! Border bill blowback and 'Santa' Carney

CBC05-06-2025
The Liberals have tabled new legislation that would significantly expand law enforcement powers and tighten immigration of all kinds, including refugee claims, in a move to appease the Trump White House — but critics say it raises major concerns for Canadians' civil liberties.
Meanwhile, Mark Carney met with Canada's provincial and territorial premiers this week in his first ever first ministers' meeting, and the post-meeting vibes have been extremely positive. There seems to be a general agreement on the idea of building a new east-west pipeline — but almost nothing else about it is clear, including who would actually build it. How long will the honeymoon last?
The Toronto Star's Althia Raj and CBC Ottawa's Aaron Wherry are on the show to tackle this political doubleheader.

(Springwater Fire) Fire crews in Springwater responded to a fast-moving field fire Saturday evening near County Road 92 and Vigo Road. Officials say the wide-spread blaze, sparked by a combine, quickly swept across the dry field prompting crews to the area. Firefighters from Sprigwater and Wasaga Beach set up defensive positions to shield a farm and several residential homes in the rural area. No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged. An investigation confirmed the cause of the flames originating from the farm equipment operating in the field.

Bullish on Franco-Nevada Corp.

Franco-Nevada FNV-T (yesterday's close $235.64) traded in a wide horizontal range mostly between $140 and $220 for about four years (dashed lines). The stock had a breakout earlier this year and reached a high of $245.55 in April (A). Franco-Nevada was overbought at that time, far above the 40-week Moving Average (40wMA), and has since pulled back toward its average. There is good support near $210; only a sustained decline below $200-210 would be negative. A decisive rise above $240 would signal the resumption of the uptrend toward higher targets. Point & Figure measurements provide targets of $260 and $280. The large trading range (dashed lines) supports significantly higher targets.
