Vijayawada to host embarkation centre for AP Haj pilgrims

Amaravati: The Union Government has approved the establishment of an embarkation centre in Vijayawada for Haj pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh for the 2026 pilgrimage. This significant decision follows a special request from the newly formed coalition government in the state, as announced by NMD Farooq, Minister for Law and Minority Welfare. In a statement released here on Wednesday, Minister Farooq expressed gratitude to the Central Government for its positive response. He highlighted that the coalition government, led by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, along with the State Minority Welfare Ministry, collectively brought the need for an embarkation centre in Vijayawada to the attention of Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu. Minister Farooq welcomed the Central Government's official announcement of the Vijayawada centre, which will be an addition to the 17 existing embarkation points across the country. He noted that currently, Haj pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh often travel from embarkation centres in Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and other cities. The state government has been coordinating with those respective state governments to facilitate arrangements for AP pilgrims. The minister emphasised that having a dedicated centre in Vijayawada will allow the Andhra Pradesh government to provide better facilities and services for its pilgrims. Recognising the additional financial burden of up to Rs 68,000 in airfare for pilgrims departing from Vijayawada, Minister Farooq announced that the coalition government will provide a subsidy of Rs 1 lakh to each pilgrim choosing to depart from the Vijayawada centre. He also informed that the application process for Haj 2026 has already commenced. He urged all pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh to prioritise choosing the Vijayawada embarkation centre to avail themselves of the improved facilities and the Rs 1 lakh subsidy offered by the State government. Andhra Pradesh Waqf Committee chairman Abdul Azeez thanked Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, Minister for Minorities Farooq and the Central government for sanctioning an embarkation centre in Vijayawada for Haj pilgrims.

Rs 11 crore cash seized in guest house in Hyderabad

Vijayawada: In a new twist to the liquor scam case, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) recovered Rs 11 crore cash from a guesthouse near Hyderabad. The currency notes were kept in 12 cardboard boxes at Sulochana Farm Guesthouse at Kacharam in Shamshabad mandal of Rangareddy district, said sources here. The SIT seized the cash during the searches at the houses and offices of the accused in the scam, which allegedly took place during the previous government of the YSRCP. The investigating officials also seized liquor hidden on the same premises. The SIT sources said, 'Cash and liquor were hidden at the direction of Kasireddy Raja Sekhar Reddy, the prime accused in the case.' The SIT officials searched the guesthouse on the basis of the information revealed by Varun Purshottam, who is accused number 40 in the case. The investigation team is also probing the role of Chanikya and Vinay, both accused in the case, in concealing the cash. On the direction of Kesireddy and Chanikya, Varun had hidden the cash in 12 boxes, the sources said. During the questioning by SIT officials, Varun reportedly confessed to the crime and revealed information about cash and liquor. The scam had occurred during the YSRCP rule between 2019 and 2024. After TDP-led NDA came to power last year, a case was registered at CID Police Station in Mangalagiri under sections 409, 420, 120 (B), r/w 34 and 37 of IPC and section 7, 7A, 8, 12, 13 (1), (b), 13 (2) of Prevention of Corruption Act 1988. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) initially conducted an investigation following a complaint by an official of the excise department. Later, the government constituted an SIT, headed by NTR district commissioner of police S V Rajashekhar Babu, to probe the case. The SIT found large-scale irregularities and fund misappropriation in the liquor policy implemented during 2019-24. Investigators reportedly uncovered a kickback network involving nearly Rs 3,500 crore siphoned off over five years. The SIT has already arrested 12 accused, including YSRCP MP P. V. Midhun Reddy.

TG seeks lower interest rates on REC loans

Hyderabad: The Telangana government on Wednesday poured out its financial woes before the Rural Electricity Corporation (REC) and urged it to lower interest rates on loans taken by the previous BRS government for the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (KLIP). Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy met REC Managing Director Jitendra Srivastava in New Delhi and explained the mounting financial burden on the state government due to high interest rates on the loan availed by the previous government for KLIP. The then BRS government had borrowed Rs 16,000 crore from REC at high interest for irrigation projects, the irrigation minister said, adding that the Congress government has been facing a big difficulty to repay the loans with high interest rates. In some instances, the government could not repay loans due to paucity of funds and received notices from the REC, Reddy explained. REC, a Central government agency, has recently issued a notice to the state government for not paying the installment amount of Rs 1,393 crore towards loans borrowed by the Kaleshwaram Irrigation Project Corporation Limited (KIPCL) and Telangana State Water Resources Infrastructure Development Corporation (TSWRIDC). The REC also warned that loans availed by both the corporations would be declared NPAs (non-performing assets) if the state government failed to clear the dues. In a letter to Irrigation Secretary Rahul Bojja, REC Executive Director Jithin Kumar stated: 'There is a total overdue of Rs 1,393.65 crore of which Rs 319.74 crore and Rs 292.75 crore are critical dues of TSWRIDC and KIPCL, respectively. If dues are not cleared on or before June 28, it will lead to slippage of both accounts into the NPA category'. Furthermore, Jithin said both the borrower accounts were already classified as Stage-2 category under the Reserve Bank's NPA norms. This delay in serving the dues will have a negative impact on the financial record and rating of the utilities and the state, he remarked. At the time of availing the loan, the state government has agreed to repay the loan amount in monthly installments. Officials said that the REC already expressed serious concerns over the poor condition of the project after three barrages - Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla - suffered damages. The delay in repayment will create more problems, they added. Responding to the Irrigation Minister's plea, the REC CMD said that the Centre will consider the state government's request and provide a relief from the burden of the payment of loans with high interest rates.
