Nobu Barcelona hotel review: a trendy pad with a spa near Sants station

Times6 hours ago
The neighbourhood around Sants station, a five-minute metro ride from Placa d'Espanya, may not be the most romantic in Barcelona, but the area has more to it than meets the eye. As train travel gains pace, this working-class residential district away from the tourist track has started attracting more international visitors — not least since it welcomed a stylish Nobu hotel in 2019. The hotel is a glamorously renovated 1970s skyscraper that is home not only to the highest rooftop bar in Barcelona but also a superb Nobu restaurant with panoramic views, a sensuous Nobu spa and some of the city's dreamiest rooms with views. Like the majority of the guests, staff are young and hip, as well as helpful, generally, though service can be a bit hit and miss.

Score 9/10Nobu Barcelona may not have the most handsome exterior, but once you get over the drab, 1970s office-block façade you're in for a treat. Rooms on the higher floors have been blessed with the best views in town, whether they face the city, the sea, Placa d'Espanya or Mount Tibidabo. If you don't want to choose, book a corner or Sake suite. These 65 sq m sanctuaries, located from the 15th floor up, are filled with Japanese-inspired design details, from silky kimono-style robes to brushwork art pieces. If you're fortunate enough to have windows facing northeast, you can watch the sunrise from your bed, before enjoying a leisurely soak in the gorgeous, cedar-wood, onsen-style bath tub with the Sagrada Familia in the background. All bathrooms are tastefully finished in marble, with walk-in rainfall showers and luxurious toiletries. On the lower floors, the 30 sq m Deluxe and Deluxe City options mostly overlook the greyness of Sants station and the surrounding streets but present more affordable accommodation for business travellers or families who plan to not spend much time in their room.
Score 8/10For most people the word 'Nobu' conjures images of the Japanese chef Nobu Matsuhisa's lip-smacking concoctions. If the idea of his toro tuna belly tartare with caviar or legendary miso-glazed black cod makes you go all googly eyed, you'll be delighted to learn that the crowning glories of Nobu Barcelona are the Nobu Restaurant, which occupies the 23rd floor, with cityscapes to match, and the Nobu Bar, serving bites and cocktails on the same floor. The breakfast buffet — a more standard affair with fruit, pastries, local cheese and charcuteries — and food from an à la carte menu including eggs made to order are also available here.
One floor up, a simpler menu of tasty bites — such as salt-and-pepper squid, wagyu beef sliders and a life-altering spin on Caesar salad with truffle wasabi aioli — are served at the city's highest rooftop bar, where the only thing more mouthwatering than the food and cocktails are the 360-degree views that extend from the Sagrada Familia to Montjuic and down to the sea. Sip a Yukata — a spicy and refreshing blend of tequila, shisho, lime and ginger ale — as you gawk.

Score 8/10Nobu's sun-drenched rooftop, with its photogenic plunge pool and knockout views, is a great spot to while away an afternoon. If you're lucky enough to snag a lounger, even better (note: these are in short supply). The rooftop also hosts regular events and parties featuring DJs that are open to guests and the public. The sensuous subterranean Nobu Spa has three treatment rooms offering an impressive range of treatments, including a Japanese silk massage, which involves a rice scrub and a hot-stone massage, and the Natura Bissé 3D Collagen Shock facial, designed to leave you with a youthful glow. There's also a sauna, steam bath and well-equipped but windowless gym. Guests can join complimentary weekly Swasthya yoga classes or reclaim their Zen with the Be Well at Nobu package, which includes spa experiences and wellness classes.
Score 7/10While Sants may be a neighbourhood on the up, it's still not the most convenient base for exploring the beach, the old town or Gaudí's architecture. That said, this side of town has plenty of worthwhile attractions, ranging from the National Museum of Catalan Art and the Magic Fountain water and light shows at Placa d'Espanya to the Nou Camp football stadium, home of Barcelona FC (when it reopens in 2026 after renovation). There's a growing collection of trendy local restaurants around Placa del Centre and off Avenida de Madrid, including La Mundana, a popular contemporary tapas bar. Also worth a visit is the underrated Parc de l'Espanya Industrial, with its urban, post-industrial lake and sculptures.

Moment ‘mini-tsunami' sweeps SIDEWAYS across tourist beach injuring 8 injured as freak wave drags sunbathers over rocks

THIS is the shocking moment a "mini-tsunami" swept sideways across a tourist beach - leaving eight people injured. Freak waves dragged bathers towards rocks as they took a dip in the sea in the Costa de la Luz in Spain. 6 6 6 6 A 60,000-ton cargo ship has been blamed for stirring the water and causing the freak waves to rip through the Spanish beach - but sideways. Footage showed dark-coloured water speeding towards the beach before hitting a large rock in the water and rebounding back onto the sand. A woman sunbathing on the beach could be overheard yelling: 'The rock, the rock,' as she scrambled to escape the wave. Many people were hurt after they were smashed against rocks to the left. The bizarre water waves, dubbed "mini-tsunami" by the beachgoers, left sunshades scattered over the sand. A huge cargo ship - thought to be the one that caused the freak waves - was seen in the background. One witness said afterwards on social media: 'It passed very close to the shore and caused a strong wave that swept several people away. 'People were literally thrown to the ground.' Another blamed the cargo ship, saying: "It was a huge ship and then it caught the expansive wave like a tsunami, which absorbs the water and then expels it very forcefully.' Watch terrifying moment massive freak waves batter Peru sweeping away boats & swamping seaside towns One of the bathers hurt had to be hospitalised. The woman, identified only as 28-year-old Rocio, said from her hospital bed: 'I've got a broken foot and I'm waiting to be operated on. 'I was coming out of the water with a paddleboard when the wave hit me from the left and knocked me to the ground. 'I couldn't see anything and got trapped under the board. I only found out what had happened and that a ship was to blame when I got to hospital.' She told a Spanish TV station: 'I've got to have an operation on my foot and I've got a long period of rehabilitation ahead of me. 'It's the last thing I wanted at the start of the summer.' An investigation into the incident has been launched, with local authorities trying to find whether the cargo ship had breached rules and came too close to the beach. The local harbour master's office said overnight, a new speed limit in the area for this type of vessel had been set at 11.5 knots to avoid another "mini-tsunami". Last year, massive freak waves swept away boats and swamped seaside towns in Peru. Footage captured the monster swells battering the coast of the South American country on the Pacific Ocean. 6 6

UK weather: Met Office issues yellow rain warning TODAY with ‘persistent, heavy' downpours & 50mph winds after heatwave

THE Met Office has issued a yellow warning for rain today as "persistent, heavy" downpours are predicted for parts of the UK. Windy conditions, with gusts of up to 50mph, could also lead to travel disruption in the affected areas, marking a stark change in the weather since the heatwave earlier this week. 6 6 6 The weather warning has been put in place for much of the west coast of Scotland from 6am today until 3pm tomorrow. It states: "Persistent, heavy rain on Friday and Saturday brings difficult travel conditions and possible flooding in places". The Met Office explained that spray and flooding on roads would likely increase journey times, with bus and train services also similarly impacted by the rainfall. Warnings have also been put in place for "some interruption" to power supplies and other services. The strongest period of rainfall is expected to be throughout much of Friday and overnight before easing on Saturday, the weather agency said. It warned that around 40 to 60mm of rain is expected to build up "quite widely", with potentially more than 100mm falling over some mountains. The Met Office added that the rain would be accompanied by windy conditions, with gusts reaching as high as "40 to 50mph" around coasts and hills. Residents in these areas have been advised to avoid travelling by road during "potentially dangerous conditions". If you must travel, make sure to drive cautiously and watch for possible danger, the Met Office cautioned. Areas affected by the warning include Perth and Kinross, Stirling, the Highlands, Argyll and Bute, Inverclyde, North Ayrshire, Renfrewshire, and West Dunbartonshire. Grumpy Wimbledon fans left with sticky fingers as record-breaking weather sees ice creams melt before getting to court Summarising the weather today, the Met Office said it would be "wet and windy" across Scotland and Northern Ireland, with the rain being heaviest across western Scotland. It said this rain would also spread into parts of northwest Wales as well as northern England as the day progresses. But beyond this, the Met Office said it would be a largely "fine and dry" day elsewhere, with "plenty of sunshine". Temperatures have begun to drop down towards average levels from this time of year, after a heatwave swept across much of the UK over the past week. 6 6 6 Lasting for as long as six days in some areas, temperatures soared above 34C during the heatwave in southern England. The blistering heat finally came to an end on Wednesday as temperatures were no longer above the given threshold for three consecutive days in any part of the UK. On Tuesday, the hottest day of the year so far, Brits were spotted rushing to beaches and outdoor pools to cool off. 34.4C was recorded on the mercury in Writtle, Essex, trumping last year's record high of 33.2C - recorded on June 21 in Charlwood, Surrey. Since 1960, UK temperatures in June have surpassed 34C in only three years, with the hottest being 35.6C - recorded in 1976. Met Office five-day forecast Today: Wet and windy across Scotland and Northern Ireland, with the rain heaviest across western Scotland. The rain will also spread into parts of northwest Wales and northern England later. Otherwise, fine and dry elsewhere with plenty of sunshine but breezier. Tonight: The cloud and rain gradually spreading southeastwards across the rest of the UK, but very little reaching the southeast. A mild night but remaining windy in the north. Saturday: A breezy day with large amounts of cloud and some outbreaks of rain, most frequent in the west. Temperatures around average in the north, but feeling warm in the south. Outlook for Sunday to Tuesday: Remaining changeable on Sunday and Monday, with some further spells of rain, especially in the west. Drier and brighter for all on Tuesday. Rather cool initially, but turning warmer Tuesday.
