Police shut down bogus initiation school, owner (51) arrested
Police spokesperson Constable Penelope Khulong said during the arrest last Saturday, 10 boys aged between 11 and 17 were at the school.
She said the initiates were given medical attention and then taken to their families.
Khulong said the arrest came after a parent had complained that her son had been accepted into an initiation school without her completing a consent form.
The complaint was submitted to the Gauteng Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee (PICC) under the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA).
Khulong said a representative of CoGTA received information, and the representatives of the PICC located the school in Mamelodi East.
She said the delegation discovered that the school is not on the official list of approved winter initiation schools in the province as published by the CoGTA.
She said the suspect could not produce the relevant documentation that is required for the school to operate.
'The PICC representatives informed the suspect that the initiation school was operating illegally and took the complainant's son home,' she said.
Khulong said that because of the seriousness of the incident, the PICC representatives reported the matter to Mamelodi East police, who apprehended the suspect on May 21.
She said the rescued initiates were given medical attention.
Mamelodi East police station commander Brigadier Terence Naidoo applauded the collaborative effort between the CoGTA and police.
Naidoo highlighted that this is a period in which different communities around the country observe their customary practices through initiation.
He said as much as culture is sacred and different practices are respected, they should still be conducted within the bounds of the law and also put the well-being of initiates first.
He indicated that the arrest sends a stern warning to all schools that police will stop at nothing to protect lives in the communities.

'Upon our arrival, we realised that the lifeless body was indeed of our daughter,' he said, continuing that as he came closer he noticed that Thulisile's body had been stabbed many times. Mhlogo said it will take time for them to come to terms with what happened to their daughter as they are still shocked and in disbelief. He said: 'We had big plans for Thuli and expected great things from her. I work as a driver, and we were planning to buy a truck to start a logistics business, where Thuli would be responsible for overseeing the operations. Now that her life was cut short, we feel completely robbed.' Thulisile's aunt, Nkateko Mhlongo, said the family is distraught over the loss of the young child, adding, 'It is sad, and I am still in disbelief about what happened to my niece'. She urged the police to arrest the person responsiblein order to find closure as the family, as all they want is for justice to prevail. Three Tshwane employees arrested in R7m transformer theft probe
A year-long investigation into the theft of a transformer worth R7 million from the Laudium substation has led to the arrest of three City of Tshwane employees as the Gauteng Organised Crime Unit tightens the net around a suspected infrastructure theft syndicate. Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said a thorough investigation by Gauteng Organised Crime Unit has led to the arrest of three employees from the City of Tshwane Municipality. 'This arrest follows an ongoing investigation which started last year November, where 11 suspects were initially arrested for stealing a transformer at Laudium substation worth approximately R7 million. 'The 10 suspects who were subcontractors were released after they could not be linked to the crime, and one who is an employee of the municipality remained behind bars and has since made several court appearances and is currently remanded in custody until August 2025.' She said the three suspects arrested today, July 01, 2025, will be charged with theft of essential infrastructure and are expected to appear before Pretoria Magistrates' court tomorrow, July 02, 2025. More arrests are expected as investigations continue. Tshwane District Commissioner, Major General Samuel Thine, has commended the team for their ongoing efforts to deal with this crime. He further assured the public that the police will continue working hard in dismantling the syndicates that target essential infrastructure and related crimes, as this has a detrimental impact on the economy of the country. Police nab 343 suspects in Tshwane
Police were out in full force in Tshwane this weekend targeting the rural precincts of Cullinan and Boschkop. Captain Johan Van Dyk said the police in Tshwane were continuing to tackle the disruptive crime operations with Operation Shanela. 'This planned intervention is aimed at continued actions by addressing crime in Tshwane,' said Van Dyk. He added that the crime interventions resulted in the arrest of 343 suspects for various criminal offences. He continued, 'These results are a direct outcome of planning, strategic deployments and heightened visibility aimed at reducing crime and continued tracking and tracing of wanted suspects.' He said through the strategic deployments, detectives were responsible for 274 arrests, including 82 suspects for gender-based violence-related offences, one for murder, six for attempted murder, eight for armed robbery, 26 for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and 10 for rape. He said a roadblock with two operational teams was deployed in the Cullinan and Boschkop areas, resulting in 906 individuals and 450 vehicles being searched. He said 13 suspects were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, while 22 undocumented foreign nationals were detained. According to Van Dyk, 'The undocumented foreign nationals are currently being processed by immigration authorities.' 'Targeted patrols were conducted at 18 identified crime hotspots, leading to further arrests and the issuing of fines, including 20 persons for public drinking with eight persons for being intoxicated in public.' He said traffic enforcement units issued 16 AARTO infringement notices, totalling R7 250 in fines. 'Liquor compliance inspections were carried out at 15 establishments, resulting in four being closed for non-compliance. A total of 724,145 ml of alcohol and two music sound systems were confiscated.' Van Dyk said the operation was executed by the District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine, the Department of Home Affairs, Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and representatives of the local Community Policing Forum.
