‘Can someone show Prithvi this? It can be done': Pietersen lauds Sarfaraz's fitness overhaul, points out Shaw

Indian Express4 days ago
Middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan underwent a rigorous transformation, shedding nearly 17 kgs in hopes of reviving his international career after being unexpectedly omitted from India's Test squad for the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Series against England.
Working tirelessly with his father — his lifelong coach — Sarfaraz dedicated the past few months to intense fitness training. Having gone unsold in the Indian Premier League 2025, the batter channelled that disappointment into his weight-loss mission.
In Sarfaraz's absence, Karun Nair was picked by the selection committee for the England tour as the Karnataka batter made his India comeback after eight years.
Former England star Kevin Pietersen praised Sarfaraz's dedication, predicting it would translate to improved on-field performances.
Posting on X, Pietersen wrote: 'Outstanding effort, young man! Huge congrats and I'm sure it's going to lead to better and more consistent performances on the field. I love the time you've spent reorganising your priorities! LFG!'
In a pointed remark, he added: 'Can someone show Prithvi this please? It can be done! Strong body, strong mind!' referencing out-of-form Prithvi Shaw, who has faced persistent criticism regarding his fitness.

Shaw was dropped by the Mumbai senior selection committee last year from a Ranji Trophy game due to poor fitness and was prescribed a two-week fitness programme prepared by the MCA trainers. The team management had informed MCA that Prithvi Shaw's body contains 35 percent fat and that he needs rigorous training before he gets back into the side.
Last October, the selection committee of MCA had taken a call that Shaw needed to shed off a few kilos, if he wants to play for the Mumbai team again. His fitness and form never improved and as a result the selection committee decided to drop him from Vijay Hazare Trophy too which was played in December 2024.
Shaw moved away from Mumbai and is set to play for Maharashtra from the next domestic season after receiving a NOC from MCA.

With his classic 150, Joe Root uproots India's hopes in Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy

It was a day when Joe Root made everybody on the field realise that he was in a different zone, league and class. He showed he was better even than the heroes they grew up worshipping. Root's 248-ball 150 saw him climb over Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting to be on the Test batting podium. He now has silver while Kallis's bronze has been transferred to Ponting. The 34-year-old modern-day batting master is now second only to Sachin Tendulkar, who has 15921 runs. Root — eventually stumped off Ravindra Jadeja — took his run tally to 13,409, which is around the sum total of India's entire playing XI in this Test. Root hasn't scored the most runs in this series but probably managed to pull off the most important ones. This was the most vital moment of this closely fought series. England needed a win here to seal the series and there came a window of opportunity. He started the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with an unbeaten half-century that guided the team during the impossible chase, he scored a ton at Lord's to level the series and he would save his best to possibly take England home. On the third day of the fourth Test, India were on the ropes but still they showed a spark of life in them. Out came the smiling old champion, gloves hanging from his hands to deliver the knockout punch. Root's hundred killed the contest, ending the suspense of the thrilling series. The India-England Test battle had been close, now it is as good as closed. England, who ended Day 3 at 544/7 are 186 runs ahead of India with two days to go. India has a mountain to climb and their troops look tired, jaded, spent and defeated. At the start of the day, the Indian team seemed to be driven, possibly the motivational talk in the team huddle still ringing in their ears. After the forgettable showing on Day 2, easily the worst day for the team on this tour, words would have been said to regroup and put all hands on deck. In the early hours today, India was a charged team. Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah were running in hard. They looked tired but fired to give that one final push. From scoring over 5 per over last evening, there was a sharp fall in the run-rate. Root and Pope had downed the shutters and were waiting for the last flicker of the flame to die. Root would lead the way, Pope would follow. The England No.4 is not a batsman with an ego. Earlier in the series when Bumrah, who has taken his wicket many times, was on fire; Root would avoid playing him. He is skillful, like many other batsmen, but smart too. He waited for the bowlers to make mistakes and he would punish them. Bumrah's first spell of the day read 5-1-17-0 – it's not that he was breathing fire and just unlucky not to get a wicket but it was because the batsmen were eager to wait. Newcomer Anshul Kamboj, who was having a nightmarish game, was next to bowl. It was wise to hold back the fire. There was Ravindra Jadeja too. The left-arm spinner hasn't quite enhanced his image as a wicket-taker on foreign pitches on this England tour. In the three Tests before Old Trafford, he has taken 4 wickets for 431 runs. Root and Pope would keep knocking the ball to mid-on or mid-off for singles and be watchful when the ball would turn a shade. Root would keep his eyes on the ball and play it late to guide it to square. This was looking all too easy for England. Mysteriously, the entry of Washington Sundar on the scoreboard was much delayed. He was introduced in the 68th over of the Test. By lunch, Root and Pope had taken England close to India's score, the next two sessions were about building the lead. Pope would get out to Sundar, beaten by the drift, and so would Harry Brook but Root was there, he knew the importance of not losing the grip on this Test. The post-lunch enthusiasm of taking quick wickets in the Indian camp too needed to be nipped in the bud. England couldn't have had better men than Root and Ben Stokes. In between his solid play, Root would step out to Kamboj and hit him straight out of the boundary. Against Jadeja, bowling to a heavy off-side field, he would sweep and get four on the leg side. The lead was climbing, Indian tempo was flailing and bowlers were also dropping. Siraj would walk into the dressing room with the physio in tow. On a day of many misfortunes, Bumrah would twist his ankle while climbing the dressing room stairs. Both Siraj and Bumrah would return and bowl but they seemed to be going through the motions. India might want to wipe out the memory of this day as early as possible, but for England, this was a glorious day. There is a lesson for India, and their skipper Shubman Gill, from the Root story. Growing up Root was the chosen one, like Shubman. Born in a cricket-obsessed family, the Yorkshire boy's batting was honed because of the hours of training since he was around 8. Even as a junior, he would hit thousands of balls, like the kid in a Punjab border village. He was soft-spoken but would have a strong voice in the dressing room. A batsman destined to play for England, and the next England captain. Root would get captaincy when he was 26, Shubman a year earlier. Root in his long career has seen slumps and really bad days and worse ones too that would see him lose his captaincy. The Indian captain, too, had a bad day today but he too can aspire to have a Root kind of podium climbing.

Joe Root Breaks World Record Of Scoring Most Runs Against One Bowler In Tests

Root has scored a total of 588 runs against Ravindra Jadeja in Test cricket. No other batter has scored more runs than him against one bowler in the five-day format of the game. Joe Root is England's best batter of all time. The right-handed batter from Yorkshire, since making his Test debut against India in Nagpur on December 13, 2012, has played a total of 157 matches for England and with the help of 38 centuries and 66 fifties, scored 13,409 runs in 286 innings. Root came out to bat at No. 4 for England in the first innings of the ongoing fourth Test against India and scored 150 runs from 248 balls with the help of 14 fours. During his 150-run knock, Root broke multiple batting records which includes overtaking Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis and Ricky Ponting to become the second highest run scorer in Test cricket. He also now holds the record for scoring most Test centuries (12) against India, fourth most centuries in Tests (38) and second most fifty-plus scores in Tests (104). In addition to that, Root also broke Steve Smith's record of scoring most runs against one bowler in Test cricket. According to data shared by Cricbuzz, Root has scored a total of 588 runs against India's Ravindra Jadeja in Test cricket which is the most by any batter against one bowler in the five-day format of the game. Smith is second on the list with 577 runs in Tests against England's Stuart Broad and Virat Kohli takes No. 3 position with 573 runs against Australia's Nathan Lyon. India's Cheteshwar Pujara has also scored 571 runs in Tests against Lyon. Smith, who has 403 runs to his name in the ongoing Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, was dismissed by Jadeja on Friday. He was stumped by Dhruv Jurel on the second ball of the 120th over. This was just the second time Root got stumped in Tests. The previous was to Nathan Lyon in the Ashes 2023 opener at Edgbaston. view comments First Published: July 25, 2025, 23:19 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. RCB's Chinnaswamy Stadium deemed unsafe to host large-scale events: Report

The M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru has been deemed fundamentally unsafe to host large-scale events, according to a damning judicial commission report accessed by ESPNcricinfo. The findings, recently approved by the Karnataka cabinet, cast serious doubts over the stadium's ability to host key fixtures, including matches in the Women's ODI World Cup and the 2026 IPL Justice John Michael D'Cunha Commission, constituted to investigate the June 4 stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL victory celebrations, concluded that the stadium's 'design and structure' are inherently 'unsuitable and unsafe' for events drawing large crowds. The stampede led to the death of 11 people and left over 50 its report, the commission issued a strong warning that continuing to host large events at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium could seriously endanger public safety. It said the stadium is not suitable for managing big crowds and that holding such events there comes with 'unacceptable risks' related to crowd control, emergency response, and traffic movement in the city. The report urged that high-attendance events should instead be held at venues that are better designed for crowd safety. It recommended that any future stadium used for such events should meet international safety to ESPNcricinfo, the commission identified several major shortcomings in the stadium's infrastructure. Built in 1974, the Chinnaswamy lacks proper queuing and waiting areas separated from busy public roads. It does not have enough entry and exit gates to safely manage the large number of fans who attend matches. The report also said the stadium is poorly connected to public transport, making access difficult during large events. Importantly, there are no detailed emergency evacuation plans in place that match global safety guidelines. There is also limited space for parking or pick-up and drop-off zones, which adds to the chaos during major Karnataka government has approved the findings, paving the way for potential legal and disciplinary action against several key stakeholders. Those named in the report include RCB, the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), event management firm DNA Entertainment, and senior officers from the Bengaluru report's implications are significant. The Chinnaswamy Stadium is currently scheduled to host marquee matches in the upcoming Women's World Cup, including the tournament opener and a semi-final, in September-November 2025. The M Chinnaswamy Stadium will also host the Women's Premier League and the Indian Premier League next commission found that all involved parties proceeded with the June 4 event despite being fully aware of the challenges in managing crowd safety, especially with a government function taking place simultaneously at Vidhana Soudha, less than a kilometre also uncovered glaring lapses in policing. Only 79 personnel were deployed inside the stadium, with none stationed outside despite the expected turnout. No ambulances were present at the venue, and senior officials were slow to respond—the Joint Commissioner of Police reportedly arrived 30 minutes after the stampede cabinet's approval now enables legal and departmental action against RCB, KSCA, and DNA Entertainment, as well as senior police officials already under investigation. Five officers, including the then Bengaluru Police Commissioner and two other IPS officers, had previously been suspended, and multiple FIRs have been filed citing negligence and culpable homicide.- EndsMust Watch
