HRCP report highlights rights, security crisis
The Pakistan Human Rights Commission (HRCP), Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa chapter, has released its Annual Report 2024, highlighting worsening human rights conditions and security concerns in the region. The report was unveiled by HRCP Vice-Chairperson Akbar Khan during a press conference at the Peshawar Press Club. According to the report, terrorism continues to take a heavy toll on civilians, law enforcement personnel, and security forces - a grim reflection of the deteriorating security landscape in the province. At least 150 new cases of enforced disappearances were recorded over the past year, prompting repeated judicial interventions. Despite this, legislative progress remained sluggish, with only 30 bills tabled in the provincial assembly - 21 of which were passed. Judicial pressure also intensified, with more than 23,000 cases pending in the Peshawar High Court (PHC) and over 38,000 cases overall, including many related to contempt of court involving political and police figures. The HRCP report also drew attention to the growing trend of violence driven by "self-styled justice" and noted a disturbing surge in crimes against children, including the murder of several minors. Regarding labor rights, the report documented serious violations, including the deaths of 26 miners due to hazardous working conditions and extremist attacks. Additionally, more than 30 laborers were abducted by militants. Environmental concerns were also underscored in the report. Over 100 people reportedly lost their lives due to torrential rains and floods, while Peshawar remained among the most polluted cities globally. Speaking at the press conference, Professor Dr Sarfaraz, HRCP Coordinator, said that worsening law and order in the tribal districts has led to mounting humanitarian crises and severe economic stagnation. He criticized both the federal and provincial governments for neglecting the region, leaving citizens vulnerable to numerous socio-economic problems.

However, the 27-year-old has continued his good form as he recently scored 92 in the first unofficial Test against England Lions. Following his team India snub, Harbhajan Singh revealed that he was left shocked after not seeing his name in the squad. However, he urged Sarfaraz to learn from Karun Nair, who made a comeback in the Indian team after seven years on the back of solid performances in the domestic circuit. 'It's very unfortunate... I was a bit shocked not seeing his name in the squad. I'm sure he will come back strong. He has got that will to make a comebackAll I can say is, don't be disheartened, you will get your due, if not today, then at Karun Nair. He scored 300 runs against England and then never got too many opportunities. Now he is back in England with the team,' Harbhajan told PTI. Sarfaraz recently also hammered 101 runs off just 76 balls, laced with 15 fours and two sixes during team India's intra-squad practice. In six Test appearances for India so far, Sarfaraz has amassed 371 runs at an average of 37.10, including a memorable 150 in the second innings of the Bengaluru Test against New Zealand last year. The 27-year-old was training hard for the all-important England tour as he even lost ten kg through a strict diet plan. However, much to his dismay, he failed to find a place in the squad despite not playing a single match during the Australia tour. In his place, the selectors have shown faith in Abhimanyu Easwaran and Sai Sudharsan, who are yet to make their Test debuts. When the Indian team for the upcoming England Tour was announced, Sarfaraz Khan's name was a big absence from the squad roster, leaving many fans and experts surprised by the decision. Ahead of the squad announcement, many felt that he had done enough to claim a spot in the squad for the five-match Test series vs England, having made his India debut last year in a home serfies against the same side. Among the players who have been overlooked for the five-match Test series against England that gets underway four days from now is middle-order batter Sarfaraz Khan, a domestic run-machine who already has a majestic 150 along with three half-centuries to his name in six Test appearances. Former India opener Aakash Chopra is among those who sympathise with Sarfaraz and feel the Mumbaikar has the right to feel bad about not getting chances despite making the most of whatever opportunities he's getting at the moment. 'Sarfaraz Khan hasn't done anything wrong thus far. In fact, he hasn't done anything wrong till now. The one match he played, he scored 90-plus runs. He couldn't score a hundred, but he scored runs. After that, you didn't play him in the next match, and he is not part of the Test team,' Chopra said on his YouTube channel. 'He hasn't failed in England, Australia and South Africa thus far, but you haven't given him a chance. It is not a good story. I can understand if you don't have confidence in his technique or playing style, that he might not be able to score runs there, then you have to take a call. Then don't send him with India A also. because you have a pre-conceived notion,' he added. Chopra questions the point of playing Sarfaraz in India A games Chopra also mentioned the fact that Sarfaraz did not get a single opportunity across five Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia despite his 150 against the Black Caps at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium before the tour. He added that while Sarfaraz did fail in the subsequent Tests against New Zealand – in Pune and Mumbai – hardly any of the other batters stepped up either. 'If you think he can make runs, and that's why he has been picked for the India A squad, then play him in the India Test team too. What wrong has he done. He made a ton in Bengaluru. Then he failed in two matches, but no one else scored in those matches. He did not even play a single match in Australia, in fact he was not even part of the conversation.
