LANGKAWI, May 23 (Bernama) -- ASEAN countries must intensify collaboration in space technology to strengthen knowledge-sharing and capacity-building across the region, Malaysian Space Agency (MYSA) Director-General Datuk Azlikamil Napiah said.
Malaysia, he noted, plays a crucial role in the development of the space technology industry, with established infrastructure, active programmes and growing expertise.
'We aim not only to build our own capabilities, but also to lead regional development in this field,' Azlikamil told Bernama after chairing the ASEAN Space Agencies Senior Officers Roundtable Discussion.
The roundtable was held in conjunction with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) 2025 on Thursday.
The discussion was organised by the subcommittee on space technology and applications (SCOSA Malaysia) and coordinated by MYSA.
Participating in person were SCOSA members from Cambodia, the Philippines and Singapore. Recorded presentations were submitted by the ASEAN Secretariat's Science and Technology Division, SCOSA Indonesia and SCOSA Thailand.
Azlikamil said one key outcome from the talks was broad consensus that ASEAN must strengthen its space technology capabilities.
'A point raised by the ASEAN Secretariat was that each country should map out its current space technology landscape and set clear development targets.

Zambry's Visit To Japan Boosts Strategic Cooperation

PUTRAJAYA, July 31 (Bernama) – The recent working visit by Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir to Tokyo and Osaka reflects Malaysia's commitment to further explore strategic cooperation with advanced nations like Japan in driving excellence in higher education. In a statement today, the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) said the initiative is aligned with the development of the Malaysian Higher Education Plan 2025-2035, which is currently being formulated. According to the ministry, emphasis on technological entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence (AI), and high-impact technical, vocational and engineering education and training (TVET) is among the key pillars to ensure Malaysian students are ready to participate in a future innovation-driven economy. Zambry's working visit, at the invitation of the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) from July 28 to 30, aimed to strengthen Malaysia-Japan strategic cooperation in higher education, research, innovation and technology. MOHE said key components of the visit included a bilateral meeting with Koichi Hagiuda, Chairman of the Policy Research Council of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and former Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. The meeting discussed various strategic issues related to the challenges faced by modern universities and the potential for collaboration in the fields of innovation and the creative economy (orange economy). Science Castle Malaysia Expands STEM Access For Sarawakian Students

KUCHING, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Science Castle Malaysia 2025 programme in Kuching today aims to expand STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) education access for students in Sarawak, particularly those with strong potential in research and innovation. Ajinomoto (Malaysia) Berhad executive director and chief production officer Yong Kum Cheng said that based on the experience of organising the previous instalment of Science Castle Malaysia, there were major challenges for students in Sabah and Sarawak to participate in the programme due to cost and logistical constraints. Speaking at a press conference after the programme's launch today, Yong said Ajinomoto believes technology is key to nation-building, and Science Castle serves as a platform to support that goal. 'That's why we ensure the programme is inclusive - whether students are from Kuching, Sibu or rural areas, all are welcome to participate and learn through hands-on experience, not just theory,' he said. He added that factory visits and industry expert sessions help students visualise their future paths and understand how they can contribute using their knowledge. 'Students studying biology, chemistry or physics can see how their knowledge applies in fields like automation, artificial intelligence (AI), and natural resource management,' said Yong. Meanwhile, Science Castle Malaysia project chief, Muhammad Basril Muhammad Asri, said the programme is open to secondary school students, without specific themes or criteria, as long as projects relate to science and technology. 'We want to spark interest early without burdening students with complex assessments. It's about applied, hands-on learning,' he said. Muhammad Basril added that nearly 500 students joined this year, reflecting Sarawakian students' strong enthusiasm and confidence in sharing ideas.

USM's Communication Programme Ranked Among The Best In Edurank 2025

GEORGE TOWN, July 29 (Bernama) -- Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) continues to excel in the field of communication and media, with its Communication programme listed among the top in EduRank 2025. According to a statement from USM's Media and Public Relations Centre, this achievement proves that the university is not only a leader in science and technology but also in the social sciences and humanities. 'This recognition reinforces the philosophy that social sciences and humanities play a crucial role in shaping the future. These fields are not just complements to the sciences but also drivers of societal thought, shaping discourse, perceptions, and actions on both national and global levels,' read the statement. EduRank is an independent ranking system that evaluates 14,131 universities from 183 countries. The ranking considers three main components: 45 per cent research performance, 45 per cent non-academic visibility, and 10 per cent alumni achievements. Meanwhile, USM's vice chancellor Prof Datuk Seri Dr Abdul Rahman Mohamed, expressed pride in this recognition, attributing the success to the collective efforts of lecturers, administrators, students, alumni, and industry partners. Abdul Rahman said the achievement demonstrates that USM produces not only top scientists and researchers but also influential leaders in the field of communication and media. In addition, School of Communication (PPK) dean Associate Prof Dr Bahiyah Omar, described the success as a result of the integrated commitment, dedication, and cooperation of all parties involved. 'This success will serve as a catalyst for strengthening our academic programmes and expanding research and collaboration networks on a global scale. 'This accomplishment shows that USM and PPK are not just institutions for knowledge delivery but also agents of meaningful change, addressing global challenges through communication based on integrity and sustainability,' she said in the statement.
