Leo movement inspires youth to lead with heart, purpose
MIRI (Aug 2): Youth are the leaders of the future, and their involvement in organisations such as the Leo Club can empower them to develop leadership skills, gain valuable experiences, and create a positive impact in their communities.
Lions Club International 308-A2 Governor Dato Winnie Lee Siew Ping said the Leo movement is founded on three core values ― leadership, experience and opportunity ― which aim to shape young individuals into community-minded leaders.
'As Lions and Leos, we are comrades in service. Let us unite with one heart, make service our guiding compass, and ensure that leadership is always rooted in the spirit of serving others,' she said during her speech at the Joint Installation, Initiation & Orientation Ceremony for new Leo members held at Curtin University Malaysia Miri here recently.
The event was jointly held by the Leo Club of Curtin University Malaysia, Leo Club of SMK St Columba, Leo Club of Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang, and Leo Club of SMK Chung Hua Miri.
She reminded the newly installed presidents and committee of the significant responsibilities they carry, emphasising that true leadership is not about power but about inspiring others to work towards common goals.
'Actively take part in projects, share your ideas ― because every effort, no matter how small, counts,' she said.
In addition to engaging in community service, she also encouraged Leo members to maintain balance with their academic commitments, as the knowledge and skills gained through education would further enhance their ability to serve effectively in the future. lead leo club miri youths

MRC Miri lauded for nurturing volunteerism, compassion among youths

MIRI (July 28): Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin praised the Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) Miri Chapter for standing firm in delivering aid and shaping the next generation of compassionate leaders. Lee, who is also MRC Miri advisor, commended MRC Miri on its continuous efforts in instilling empathy and civic consciousness among its school-going members. 'MRC Miri Chapter continues to place its focus on nurturing volunteerism among youths, believing that early exposure to humanitarian values can create lifelong agents of kindness, resilience and social responsibility. 'We (MRC) believe the spirit of volunteerism, when cultivated from school days, creates young individuals who are not only knowledgeable but lead with compassion, integrity and responsibility,' Lee said in his address at the MRC Miri Division Annual Parade 2025 here yesterday. He said over the years, MRC Miri has remained active through a range of impactful programmes such as environmental camps, hospital visits, youth development camps, storytelling competitions and the annual flag week. He said these community-driven activities do more than just raise funds by creating a sense of purpose and belonging in young volunteers. Lee said MRC Miri currently operates several essential services including the Kidney Dialysis Centre, the Sunflower Centre for children with special needs, a 3R Recycling Centre, as well as first aid and ambulance support. 'MRC also runs training institutes for first aid, disaster relief response teams, and community outreach efforts for low-income groups (B40) under the care of Dr Devi Uma. The latest, a fundraising bakery, also contributed to sustaining operations,' he added. This year's parade, held at MCC Field, saw participation from 24 contingents representing primary and secondary schools as well as MRC Miri staff and Miri Sunflower Centre. The US branch of the international Catholic peace movement is meeting in Detroit, Michigan, this weekend (25-27 July) for a conference focused on 'Reclaiming the power of nonviolence in a broken world'. In his message, which was read to participants during opening ceremonies on Friday night, Pope Leo invited participants to recall that 'after the violence of the Crucifixion, the Risen Christ's first words to the Apostles offered peace,' a peace that is 'unarmed and disarming, humble and persevering'. Jesus, he continued, 'continues to send His followers into the world to become creators of peace in their daily lives'. Therefore 'it is all the more important for a Church capable of reconciliation to be present and visible' in parishes, neighbourhoods, and especially on the peripheries of society. Pope Leo expressed his hope that the National Conference would inspire members of Pax Christi USA to work to make their local communities ''houses of peace' where one learns how to defuse hostility through dialogue, where justice is practiced and forgiveness is cherished'. By doing so, he said, 'you will enable many more people to embrace Saint Paul's invitation to live at peace with their brothers and sisters'.
