UAE expresses solidarity with Finland, Estonia over deadly helicopters' collision

The UAE has expressed its solidarity with the Republic of Finland and the Republic of Estonia, and conveyed its sincere condolences over the victims of the collision of two helicopters near Eura Airport, which resulted in several deaths. In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs extended its sincere condolences to the Republic of Finland and the Republic of Estonia, and to the families of the victims of this tragedy. On Saturday, all five people on board two helicopters were killed when the aircraft collided mid-air in Finland and crashed to the ground, police said. "Five people died in a helicopter accident near Eura Airport on Saturday," Detective Chief Inspector Johannes Siirila said in a statement. According to their flight plans, one was carrying two people and the other three. They had taken off from the Estonian capital Tallinn and were bound for Piikajarvi, a few kilometres from where they came down. Media reports said those on board were businessmen. Finnish newspaper Iltalehti quoted one witness, Antti Marjanen, who reported seeing one of the helicopters hit the other during a manoeuvre. "One of them dropped like a stone and the other one more slowly. I didn't hear any sound," Marjanen was quoted as saying. Agencies

Russia says Baltic Sea cable damaged by 'external impact'

Russia's state-controlled telecoms giant said Saturday that its underwater cable in the Baltic Sea had been damaged by an "external impact". Several undersea telecom and power cables have been severed in the Baltic Sea in recent months, with experts and politicians accusing Russia of orchestrating a hybrid war against Western countries supporting Ukraine. "Some time ago in the Baltic Sea a Rostelecom underwater cable was damaged as the result of external impact," Rostelecom's operator told RIA Novosti news agency. "Repair work is being carried out," it added. The company said consumers were not affected. Earlier Saturday, the Finnish coastguard said they were monitoring repairs of a Russian underwater cable carried out by a Russian vessel in the Gulf of Finland. According to local authorities the undated incident took place inside Finland's exclusive economic zone. The spate of incidents led NATO countries to launch a patrol mission to protect critical underwater infrastructure in January. Aircraft, frigates, submarines and drones have been deployed as part of the new operation, titled "Baltic Sentry". Finnish authorities said in November 2023 that a Rostelecom cable in the Baltic Sea was discovered damaged in October, roughly coinciding with damage to subsea infrastructure in Sweden and Finland.
