Who is the Commanders' make-or-break player for 2025?
Who is the Washington Commanders' make-or-break player for 2025? Obviously, quarterback Jayden Daniels tops any of these lists. He's Washington's best player and most important player.
However, Pro Football Focus believes veteran cornerback Marshon Lattimore is Washington's make-or-break player for 2025.
Washington's cornerbacks ranked dead last in the NFL in PFF coverage grade last season. The team traded for Marshon Lattimore during the year to help the cause, but he appeared in just five games for the Commanders due to a hamstring injury and earned a poor 40.7 PFF coverage grade.
The team needs Lattimore to return to a high level, and he needs to play better to extend his career, as he has no guaranteed money left on his contract after this season.
PFF isn't the first to label Lattimore either as a make-or-break player or X-factor for next season. It's legitimate. A healthy Lattimore who can play to his previous level for an entire season would be a massive lift for Washington's defense. Lattimore is a four-time former Pro Bowler who has always been a CB1. He's now healthy.
General manager Adam Peters expressed confidence in Lattimore throughout the offseason. When they acquired him at last season's trade deadline, Peters and the Commanders said it was for more than just the remainder of the 2024 season. Washington wanted Lattimore because he had two more seasons remaining on his contract.
The Commanders used a second-round pick on cornerback Trey Amos in the 2025 NFL draft. From all indications, Amos thrived during offseason work and in the minicamp. A healthy Lattimore allows Washington to take it slow with Amos. Remember, the Commanders also signed versatile veteran Jonathan Jones and brought back Noah Igbinoghene. Then there is Mike Sainristil, last season's prized rookie.
So, while Washington has more depth in case Lattimore doesn't return to his previous form, a healthy Lattimore could be a game-changer for the defense. As for Lattimore personally, he knows his career is at a crossroads entering Year 9.

Bears' Joe Thuney, Jonah Jackson dubbed NFL's best guard duo
The Chicago Bears made a concerted effort to improve their offensive line this offseason after quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked a league-high 68 times during his rookie season. The Bears completely overhauled the interior, which started with the trades for All-Pro guard Joe Thuney and former Pro Bowl guard Jonah Jackson. They signed center Drew Dalman in free agency while drafting Ozzy Trapilo, who's a contender to start at left tackle as a rookie. But it's the duo of Thuney and Jackson that's garnering high praise from those around the league, where Pro Football Focus dubbed the pair the NFL's best guard duo entering the 2025 season. While there's no denying Thuney is one of the league's best, PFF believes Jackson could find his stride, as he's reunited with Ben Johnson in Chicago, and make this 1-2 punch the most formidable. "The NFL seems to lack an elite guard duo right now, but the Bears' offseason acquisitions on the interior profile as the league's best," writes Buday. "Jackson played only 267 snaps with the Rams in 2024 and was benched despite having signed a big contract last offseason. In previous years, he ranked among the top 30 guards in PFF overall grade multiple times under then-Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, who is now the Chicago Bears' head coach. Slightly above-average play from Jackson could be enough to make this duo the best in the NFL. "Joe Thuney is arguably the best pass-blocking guard in the NFL. Before moving to left tackle in 2024, he was playing some of the best football of his career. Between Week 5 and Week 12, he allowed only one pressure on 316 pass plays and earned a 95.6 PFF pass-blocking grade, which led all guards by a significant margin." Thuney is a two-time First-Team All-Pro, three-time Pro Bowler and four-time Super Bowl winner and one of the best guards in the entire NFL. Thuney's an elite pass blocker and has been the best pass-blocking guard, per Pro Football Focus, since 2021 with a 90.2 grade. Jackson, a Pro Bowl selection in 2021, is a versatile offensive lineman who has played all three positions along the interior and brings experience alongside right tackle Darnell Wright. If the Bears offensive line shows improvement this season, the sky's the limit for this offense with Williams under center and Johnson calling the shots on offense. Eagles legend pours gasoline on a flame surrounding a reinvigorated NFC East rival
Brandon Graham has stoked the fire around the Eagles and Commanders' reinvigorated rivalry. We have seen flashes of a reinvigorated rivalry between the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders before. That being said, the following statement might sound as though it's purely based on emotion. Then again, it could be spot-on and factual. The tension between these two hasn't been this thick since Buddy Ryan warned that Philadelphia's adversaries from our nation's capital would be carried off the field "in body bags". Those of you who are younger may have only heard of Buddy while talking about the old-school days with your mom, dad, grandma, or granddad. Trust us on this one. Coach Ryan was a natural treasure. He didn't win any playoff games, but we love him, though you may hear varying stories about his class (or lack thereof) outside of the Eagles community. But, anyway... Let's make long stories shorter. Buddy kept his promise. A ton of Washington's players left the field on stretchers on a November night that will forever be remembered as the Body Bag Game. Sadly, Washington returned to Veterans Stadium to exact revenge and throttle Philadelphia in a playoff game the following January. Although there have been flashes, this rivalry has never equaled that level of angst since then. Eagles' Brandon Graham pours gasoline on the fire What a story, huh? The only thing it was missing was a legend who is known for his undying loyalty to the Eagles organization and trash-talking. Don't worry... You're covered. Brandon Graham has settled into retirement nicely, but with training camp approaching, his competitive buttons haven't been turned off yet. Call us crazy, but it seems Graham is more visible now than when he played. Everywhere we see him, it's as though he is still in pads and throwing those verbal jabs before the coin toss. He recently took shots at the rival New York Giants while on stage at Fanatics Fest, and even more recently, he took a dig at longtime Eagles adversary Deebo Samuel. There's no love lost between the Eagles and Samuel, but that feud will get a shot in the arm moving forward. Washington traded a fifth-round draft choice to acquire his services. Some believe that will elevate Jayden Daniels' play and the Commanders' offense. Others aren't quite as convinced. Guess whose side Brandon Graham is on. He wasn't shy about sharing his opinion. What else needs to be said? If we're being honest, Samuel has looked a bit heavier lately. There is no love lost between Washington and Philadelphia. The tension, as mentioned above, has historically not reached the levels of what we have seen between the Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys, or the bad blood shared by Philadelphia and the New York Giants, but we may be on our way. People are anointing the Commanders too early, and for a team as prideful as the Birds, that can be taken as disrespect. Game on. These two don't meet until later in the season, but expect some fireworks.

2025 Indianapolis Colts roster preview: LB Zaire Franklin
Let's take a closer look at this Indianapolis Colts team as we go player-by-player through the roster. Up next is LB Zaire Franklin. With offseason programs now behind us, we will be getting a jump start on our training camp preview by going player-by-player through the Indianapolis Colts' 91-man roster. Going alphabetically, up next is linebacker Zaire Franklin. Zaire Franklin's profile 2024 Snap count totals 2024 PFF grades 2024 Season Review Franklin is coming off his most productive season to date. He totaled 173 tackles, which was the most in the NFL of any defender. He also set a career high with 15 quarterback pressures, four sacks, and two interceptions. The end result was Franklin making his first Pro Bowl, along with being named a second-team All-Pro. Like any player, Franklin has areas of his game that can improve. According to PFF's metrics, he had a missed tackle rate of 11.6% last season--which ranked 43rd among linebackers--and quarterbacks were efficient when targeting him in coverage, with a completion rate of 87% and a passer rating of 105.5. Looking ahead to the 2025 season I believe this new-look Colts defense under Lou Anarumo will really benefit Franklin. In this scheme, there is going to be a greater reliance on defensive backs. In turn, I anticipate that this will mean more opportunities for Franklin to play closer to the line of scrimmage, which is where he is at his best. The more aggressive scheme should result in more opportunities to get after the quarterback as well. I also really like the pairing of Jaylon Carlies with Franklin. Carlies, a former college safety, brings a needed coverage presence to the linebacker position. This element will pair well with Franklin's skill set, again allowing him more flexibility to do what he does best, operating near the line of scrimmage.
