Tourism minister launches tour of Saudi Summer program destinations in Taif
The program, launched in May with the slogan 'Color Your Summer,' runs until September and showcases destinations from Jeddah and the Red Sea's coastal escapes to the cooler highlands of Taif, Baha, and Asir. It offers more than 250 exclusive deals through partnerships with more than 200 private sector entities.
Al-Khateeb led a delegation of senior officials from the ministry and the tourism sector. The visit included tours of tourist landmarks in Taif to assess the visitor experience, review facilities, and oversee service quality.
He expressed satisfaction with the visit, highlighting Taif's natural beauty and mild climate, which help position it as a key tourist destination in the Kingdom and the region, the Saudi Press Agency reported.
Tourism data shows Taif welcomed more than 3.6 million domestic and international tourists in 2024, up 9 percent from 2023. Annual tourism spending reached SR3.4 billion ($906 million), and 266 tourism establishment licenses were issued, according to the SPA.
Al-Khateeb said at the program's launch in May: 'This year we aim to welcome more than 41 million visitors from 18 countries and achieve SR73 billion in total tourism spending. These numbers reflect Saudi Arabia's growing reputation as a world-class destination, offering unforgettable experiences year-round.'
The Kingdom aims to attract 150 million visitors in total by 2030 through improved infrastructure, diverse experiences, better connectivity, and streamlined travel procedures.
Asir is hosting its summer season with a rich array of musical, artistic, and cultural events, featuring Al-Muftaha Village and the Plato Event, along with adventure trails and outdoor activities amid the lofty mountains and pleasant weather.
Riyadh is hosting the second Esports World Cup from July 8 to Aug. 24, attracting visitors worldwide. The city also offers artistic and cultural events and various entertainment shows throughout the summer.
Jeddah is welcoming visitors with its beaches and luxury resorts. Its diverse marine activities and relaxation events make it an ideal destination for families and water sports enthusiasts. Visitors can also explore City Walk and enjoy performances at Circus 1903.
Sheybarah and Ummahat are islands that are part of the Kingdom's luxury tourism network, featuring white sandy beaches, clear waters, and colorful coral reefs to offer maritime adventures.
Taif greets summer visitors with refreshing mountain breezes and fragrant Taif roses in Arruddaf Park, in addition to traditional markets and lush orchards.
The Al-Shafa and Al-Hada mountains provide a misty, magical atmosphere for those immersed in the region's rich heritage.
Visitors can also experience stunning natural beauty in Baha, from mountain heights to valley depths in Raghadan Forest.

FlyNow eCopters to take flight in Saudi Arabia soon
In a major step toward integrating flying taxis into daily transportation, Saudi Arabia is all set to produce thousands of eCopters, FlyNow Aviation's electric air vehicles, all of which will carry the 'Saudi Made' label, according to FlyNow Aviation's Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Yvonne Winter. The Austria-based FlyNow Aviation is working to set up the assembly plant and will start the production of the cargo version in 2027. Officially, FlyNow's eCopters are expected to transport the public during Riyadh Expo 2030. 'Additionally, test operations (sandbox flights) are planned for 2025 in Saudi Arabia to adapt the technology to local conditions,' Winter told Arab News. Speaking about the future of mobility in Saudi Arabia, she said: 'Saudi Arabia is not only transforming its economy — it is shaping the future of mobility for the entire world.' She added: 'Under the leadership of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Vision 2030, the Kingdom is proving that bold ideas, advanced technology, and national pride can work hand in hand. We are honored to be part of this historic journey and proud to contribute to building Saudi-made solutions for global air mobility.' In May 2024, FlyNow Aviation signed a memorandum of understanding with the General Authority of Civil Aviation, the National Industrial Development Center, and the Sky Alliance for Automated Air Mobility. 'The cooperation aims to support the development of electric air mobility in Saudi Arabia, including regulations, airspace integration, vertiport infrastructure, and operational guidelines for unmanned air taxis,' Winter explained. In late 2024, FlyNow Aviation established a new company, FlyNow Arabia Ltd., in Riyadh, as part of its expansion strategy. The company plans to set up local production facilities to serve both domestic and international markets. FlyNow is an alumnus of the Destination Deep Tech program at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, and Winter has been invited to share insights with the participants of the follow-up program called KAUST ScaleX, which has been designed to support innovative global tech startups in expanding their operations into the Kingdom's market. Recently, Flynow achieved a significant milestone in the development of its modular eCopter family: the first untethered test flights were successfully completed at the newly secured testing site in Eastern Austria. This location enables unrestricted flight operations and accelerates its technical progress.

From Nigeria to Makkah, sereh finds a home on Saudi tables
RIYADH: Sereh, a beloved African dish rooted in Nigerian tradition, has carved out a place for itself in the culinary landscape of Saudi Arabia. Once popular as a street food in Makkah's older neighborhoods such as Al-Mansour, Al-Hafayer, and Al-Barno, sereh has grown beyond its origins to reflect a story of migration, cultural exchange, and shared taste. Traditionally, sereh — also known as tsire or suya — consists of skewered beef seasoned with a bold blend of African spices, then roasted over an open flame. This method creates not only a flavorful dish but an aromatic experience that draws people in. 'Tamiz, or Afghani bread, was also a street food, so they were often enjoyed together,' said Rodwan Fallatah, owner of the African restaurant AfriQ in Riyadh. Sereh's journey from West African street stalls to Saudi dinner tables captures the essence of Makkah's openness. 'You roast the sereh until it's hot, and with tamiz nearby, you simply grab some hot bread to enjoy with it.' The dish originates from the Hausa tribe, an ethnic group with a strong presence in northern Nigeria, southern Niger, and beyond. 'As a proud member of the Hausa tribe, I take great pride in seeing our traditional dish being enjoyed far beyond Hausa land, reaching communities across Africa and even here in Saudi Arabia,' said Zainab Hawsawi, a Saudi writer and businesswoman. She noted that the typical Hausa kitchen is a treasure trove of rich and diverse flavors, featuring meat dishes like dambu nama, delicately shredded and seasoned dried beef; kilishi, thinly sliced, spiced, and sun-dried meat; and balangu, famous for its juicy, freshly grilled pieces. 'But nothing compares to the explosion of flavors you experience when eating suya, especially as you dip each piece into yaji, the signature blend of spicy suya dipping spices,' she added. The introduction of sereh to Saudi Arabia is believed to be linked to the Hajj pilgrimage, when people from across the world brought with them their cultural traditions, including food. Sereh gradually integrated into the local food scene, creating a fusion of flavors that captivated the taste buds of residents. 'I think the logical answer would be migration,' said Fallatah, emphasizing how pilgrims helped introduce the dish into Makkah's multicultural food scene. Makkah, long regarded as a cultural crossroads, provided fertile ground for this culinary exchange. As locals encountered new dishes, they began to experiment and adapt. Originally from Madinah, Fallatah moved to Riyadh in 1997 and opened AfriQ, where he serves sereh among other dishes. His passion for African cuisine has made his restaurant a popular spot for both locals and visitors. 'The spices are unique, and the preparation of sereh is different. Locals observe and learn, and soon they want to try it themselves,' he explained, noting that demand is especially strong in hotels catering to pilgrims and tourists. Sereh's journey from West African street stalls to Saudi dinner tables captures the essence of Makkah's openness and the Kingdom's growing embrace of cultural diversity through food.
