Shaq has been refurbishing basketball courts for 30 years, knows firsthand how they can help kids

He learned firsthand from his former Boston Celtics teammate Marquis Daniels. He was a teenager three decades ago when O'Neal was playing with the Orlando Magic and rebuilt a court in the inner-city area where Daniels was growing up.
'It was big. He was somebody growing up that I looked up to, he was the tallest person I had ever seen,' Daniels told The Associated Press. 'He was playing with my home team, the Orlando Magic, and giving back to the community and showing his appreciation. For kids like me to have a court in the inner city was huge.'
Years later when they were teammates in Boston, Daniels reminded the Hall of Famer that he had been at that court dedication and how it helped change his life. After a 10-year career in the NBA, Daniels has been working as a coach at his alma mater, Auburn, since 2018.
O'Neal recalled Daniels telling him the story.
'He said, 'You don't remember me?'' O'Neal said while in Rockwall, Texas, to refurbish another court near his new home. 'I said no, and he said well I was one of the kids that grew up in Orlando and you fixed up a court. Because you fixed it up, I'm here.'
Refurbishing courts is commonplace around the NBA and WNBA. The Indiana Fever unveiled a new Legacy Court at a park in Indianapolis during All-Star weekend and the league has an initiative this year to put down orange lines across the country to inspire young players with a WNBA 3-point arc on outdoor courts.
The renovated court at Gloria Williams park is now part of a collection of Comebaq Courts, a joint venture by Icy Hot and the Shaquille O'Neal Foundation to build well-equipped and safe courts for kids across the country.
'They found this court that hasn't been refurbished in a while and that's historical with the city," O'Neal said.
Renovating one in Rockwall was actually the idea of Dallas Wings star Arike Ogunbowale. She has played her entire career in Dallas and wanted to do something for the community.
'This is like my second home. I've been here my whole career, so this initiative with Icy Hot and Shaq was a no-brainer,' she said. 'Just to give back to the youth that pours into us and my teammates every night is special."
It's special to O'Neal also as he plans to spend a lot of his time in the Texas city.
'I'll get on my little scooter or motorcycle and just ride by and see what's going on with the kids,' he said. 'I work in Atlanta, but it's only an hour flight and I'm sure at some point this will be my permanent home.'
O'Neal, who is the president of Reebok Basketball, also donated basketball shoes to all the members of the Boys & Girls Club kids who were at the event.

Byron Buxton looks to be a calming presence in Twins' clubhouse after a flurry of deadline moves

CLEVELAND (AP) — Every time Byron Buxton picked up his phone Thursday afternoon, there was a text message or news ping that one of his Minnesota Twins teammates was being traded. HT Image Two days later, Buxton was still trying to take in all the moves the Twins made as the front office made nine trades and turned over nearly 40% of the roster. Even though the All-Star center fielder is on the 10-day injured list with left ribcage inflammation, Buxton joined the Twins in Cleveland for this weekend's series as the franchise's clubhouse leader wanted to be there to provide support and be a sounding board for teammates. 'I mean ,trading nine guys like that is something that's not normal, so it was a little bit of a shock for sure,' Buxton said before Saturday's game. 'Right now, obviously, I haven't processed it. I don't know who has processed it, but something we'll talk about a little bit more at the end of the season.' Manager Rocco Baldelli said that having Buxton on the trip was important, not only for the support that he can give, but also because he remains on track to rejoin the lineup on Wednesday when the Twins are at Detroit. 'Keeping him with our trainers here and being able to get on the field here with the group when he's ready was important, but also the support that he's going to be giving the guys around him. Everybody looks to him, everyone looks to see how he'll respond to things, and he's a passionate guy. He cares about his teammates and his team and guys respect him immensely.' Buxton said he understands that baseball is a business and he anticipated moves were going to be made near the deadline. However, the amount of turnover was surprising. The Twins' most-significant move near the deadline was when shortstop Carlos Correa was dealt to Houston. Correa broke into the majors with the Astros and still has a house in Houston as he waived his no-trade clause. 'It's one of those things where you didn't think he was going to leave but with the opportunity that was ahead of him and just him being an Astro before, it's hard to pass that up in his situation. I couldn't be happier for him and his family. It is what's best for him,' Buxton said about Correa. While there are a lot of unknowns about the Twins as the team remains for sale, Buxton is trying to focus on the present. That includes making sure the new faces on the team can get acclimated quickly as well as trying to make sure the season doesn't spiral too much out of control. Minnesota won the AL Central in 2023, but missed the playoffs with an 82-80 mark last season. The Twins entered Saturday at 51-58 and on a three-game losing streak. 'These guys coming up, I don't want them to look at this as 'I finally got a shot.' You came up here because you want to win and you want to be better. So it's just playing together and having each other's backs is going to be the biggest thing going forward,' he said. ___ AP MLB:

What did Rob Pelinka say about LeBron James? General Manager hopes NBA icon retires with the Los Angeles Lakers

LeBron James is in the L.A. Lakers now (Image via Getty Images) It is currently unclear if LeBron James will remain with the Los Angeles Lakers after the 2025-2026 campaign. Despite not negotiating a longer-term contract with the organization, the four-time NBA MVP chose to exercise his $52.6 million player option for the upcoming season. Now, recently, the team's general manager, Rob Pelinka, opened up about the NBA icon and his future with the team. Additionally, NBA pro Luka Doncic also did the same a few days ago. Rob Pelinka and Luka Doncic hope LeBron James retires with the Los Angeles Lakers amid an uncertain future LeBron James' contract with the Los Angeles Lakers is about to expire. In December, he turns 41. Furthermore, there is more ambiguity in his future than there has been in a long time. According to Rob Pelinka , the general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers, it "would be great" if James retired with the team. He opened up about the same at the press announcement on Saturday, which was conducted to announce Luka Doncic's three-year, $165 million contract extension. When asked if he thought that the giant would play for the L.A. Lakers until the end of his career, Rob Pelinka responded: "All the interactions we've had with LeBron and his camp, Rich Paul in particular, have been very positive and supportive… Very professional and Rich has been great. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 11 Foods That Help In Healing Knee Pain Naturally Undo The dialogue with him has been open and constant. The Los Angeles Lakers ' general manager then said: "In terms of LeBron's career, I think the No. 1 thing we have to do there is respect he and his family's decision in terms of how long he's going to play. I think that's first and foremost. We want to respect his ability to come up with his timetable and that's really important. If he had the chance to retire as a Laker, that would be great." NBA player Luka Doncic also shared the same sentiment. The Slovenian superstar has recently made his position known. This happened amidst growing issues about LeBron James' schedule and the team's choice to focus on Luka Doncic. Luka Doncic , the NBA's all-time best scorer, also wants LeBron James to end his career wearing purple and gold. However, he hasn't given any justification for his remarks as of yet.
