Tencent Games Joins the Playing for the Planet Alliance to Champion Green Gaming
This collaboration reflects Tencent Games' commitment to sustainable innovation and environmental responsibility, aligning with Tencent's goal of achieving carbon neutrality across its operations and supply chain, by 2030. More importantly, it underscores Tencent's support of the gaming community and commitment to driving positive change in the industry.
"Tencent Games encompasses a diverse global ecosystem — from our homegrown studios to our global studio network — united by a shared commitment to building a sustainable video games business and future for all," said Brent Irvin, Corporate Vice President of Tencent. "Joining the Alliance underscores our belief that video games can be a force for good and a powerful platform for paving the way to a greener future. We look forward to close collaboration with partners across the industry to drive climate awareness and action through engaging, innovative gameplay experiences."
Tencent Games, along with its network of global studios, has already been working closely with the Alliance on its flagship initiative, the Green Game Jam, in which game developers create in-game activations that encourage players to take actions for the planet.
In 2025, Honor of Kings, developed by TiMi Studio Group and published by Level Infinite, launched a specially curated forest-themed campaign that integrates ecological conservation into gameplay, which created immersive engagement with the global community.
In 2024, Carbon Island, Tencent Games' carbon-neutral science game, and PUBG MOBILE, co-developed by LIGHTSPEED STUDIOS of Tencent Games and Krafton Inc., participated in Green Game Jam. PUBG MOBILE created the Play for Green global charity campaign. The Official and player-created maps in PUBG MOBILE's World of Wonder play mode were played over 1.4 billion times, reflecting the campaign's sustained engagement and global resonance. This campaign won the Media's Choice Award at the Green Game Award 2024.
Carbon Island was launched in 2022. It simulated the path of "Carbon Peaking - Carbon Neutral", and contained knowledge of emission reduction, low-carbon concepts and carbon sequestration means from various perspectives, such as industrial upgrading and transformation, personal energy-saving and emission reduction, and ecological protection. Carbon Island won the First to Implement Award from the Green Game Jam in 2022.
Craz3 Match, developed by TiMi Studio Group, reached players in China with engaging interactive content and educational information, guiding the players to explore the relationship between humans and nature. The campaign won the First to Implement Award in the 2021 Green Game Jam.
As a committed advocate for sustainability in gaming, Tencent Games and its network studios will continue to champion green action through the Green Game Jam, while collaborating with industry partners and experts to explore new programs that inspire positive environmental awareness among younger players.
As part of the commitment, Tencent Games will support the Alliance and gaming industry in its sustainability endeavors by developing training programs that empower game developers to integrate sustainability principles in their development practices, from energy-efficient operations to eco-conscious game design. Tencent Games is also collaborating with the Alliance to explore the development of an environmental awareness initiative for university students.
"The video games industry has the ability to engage, inspire and captivate the imaginations of billions of people across the world. This makes them a really important partner in addressing the nature and climate emergencies," said Sam Barratt, Chief of Youth, Education, and Advocacy at the UN Environment Programme (UNEP). "We are delighted that Tencent Games is committing to take further action on this agenda. Working with the video games industry to strengthen a collaborative and collective approach to reduce carbon emissions and build a more sustainable world is a mission more urgent than ever."
Tencent Games has been recognized for its sustainability initiatives. The company was awarded the Sustainability Award at Gamescom 2024, for its action-oriented commitments to operating its business sustainability.

A blast of heat and humidity will soon hit the Midwest before reaching East
Patterns of above-average heat and humidity that developed during June are showing no signs of slowing down across the United States. Temperatures will surge well into the 90s across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic early next week as another wave of hot and humid air crosses the country. Before the sultry weather reaches the Eastern Seaboard, high heat and record-warm nights will hit the Plains and Midwest, where Detroit could near triple digits on Sunday.

Kenya private sector activity slows in June, slowest level in a year
NAIROBI, July 3 (Reuters) - Kenya's private sector activity slowed in June with its biggest contraction in close to a year, driven by slower consumer spending and the impact of protests during the month, a business survey showed on Thursday. The Stanbic Bank Kenya Purchasing Managers' Index fell to 48.6 from 49.6 in May. Readings above the 50.0 mark indicate expansion in business activity while those below show contraction. The contraction was the sharpest in 11 months, the survey showed. "Weaker conditions were primarily driven by a solid contraction in business activity. Survey respondents attributed this decline to lower customer spending, challenging economic conditions and operational disruptions from protests," Stanbic Bank said in comments accompanying the survey. In the last week of June, thousands of Kenyans participated in protests, initially called to mark the anniversary of anti-government protests last year, but then amplified by public anger over the death during the month of a blogger in police custody. Interior Minister Kipchumba Murkomen said at least 10 people had been killed during one day's unrest when youth-led demonstrations were followed by looting and arson in Nairobi and other cities. The rights group Amnesty Kenya said at least 16 people were killed, all by gunshot, which it said was suspected to have been fired by police. "The dip in activity was due to output and new orders contracting because of weaker consumer spending, challenging economic conditions, and social protests reappearing in June," Christopher Legilisho, Economist at Stanbic Bank.

Iconic car brand to ‘cut 400 jobs' despite saying it has ‘no plans' to end production in UK
AN iconic sports car manufacturer is reportedly considering axing 400 jobs after saying it had no plans to end production in the UK. The factory set to lose 30 per cent of its work force in Norfolk has been open since the 1960s. 4 4 Lotus has reportedly become the latest car manufacturer to look at slashing its UK workforce. The move comes after the brand held emergency talks and fellow motor manufacturer Nissan said it would be slashing 250 jobs from one of its UK sites. A report in the Daily Mail claims that the sports car specialist is considering cutting 30 per cent of jobs at its plant in Hethel, Norfolk. Of the 1,300 staff at the site up to 390 could now be facing down the prospect of losing their job. A decision on the job losses is expected from the brand in the next few months. Recent reports that the brand was considering closing its factory in Hethel and moving production to the US were denied by the firm. Majority owned by Chinese carmaker Geely, Lotus adamantly rejected the claims, saying in a statement: "The UK is the heart of the Lotus brand—home to our sports car manufacturing, global design centre, motorsport operations, and Lotus Engineering. "It is also our largest commercial market in Europe. "Lotus Cars is continuing normal operations, and there are no plans to close the factory. "We are actively exploring strategic options to enhance efficiency and ensure global competitiveness in the evolving market. The modern classic Lotus Elise "We have invested significantly in R&D and operations in the UK, over the past six years. " Lotus remains committed to the UK, and its customers, employees, dealers, suppliers, as well as its proud British heritage." The reports of imminent closure however sparked intervention by the government with company executives meeting business secretary Jonathan Reynolds. The meeting on Sunday, June29, reportedly saw the group discuss possible support measures. 4 4 Fears were raised that the brand would fall victim to Donald Trump's import tariffs. These were reportedly not addressed by the news that the tariffs would be reduced from 27.5 per cent to 10 per cent. Despite the emergency meeting, the offer of government support and the reduction in tariffs, the brand is still said to be set to cut a huge number of jobs. The Sun has approached Lotus for comment.
