Draft Sandakan Recovery Plan urged

SANDAKAN: Sabah Progressive Party Vice President cum Tanjung Papat Division Chairman Lau Chi Keong wants the government to immediately draft a Sandakan Recovery Plan to address its long-standing development challenges. The proposed plan focuses on infrastructure improvements, establishing an Urban Transformation Centre (UTC), developing tourism packages and creating mechanisms to retain talented youths to pull Sabah's second-largest city out of its prolonged developmental stagnation.
Advertisement Lau said the Sabah Government should prioritise addressing water supply, electricity and road issues that have plagued Sandakan for years, while making it a priority to set up a UTC to improve administrative efficiency and public service delivery. He also suggested creating a small and medium enterprise incubation centre to encourage local entrepreneurship and integrate industry supply chains. 'We need to be more proactive in tourism by developing eco-tourism, historical and cultural tours, and food trails, positioning Sandakan as an international transit tourism city,' Lau said in a statement. Lau pointed out Sandakan's unique natural resources and ecological landscape, including the Kinabatangan River, tropical rainforests and conservation areas, which have high potential for development as international eco-tourism destinations.
Advertisement However, he expressed disappointment over the lack of coordination and promotion by previous governments, which resulted in these resources being underutilised and stunted economic growth. Addressing local economic recovery, Lau said skilled worker migration must be tackled first. He called on elected representatives to establish technology and skills training centres to enhance youth competitiveness. Lau noted that basic infrastructure issues in Sandakan remain unchanged from previous administrations to the present. Addressing the Chief Minister's Department post-Cabinet meeting at Menara Kinabalu on Wednesday, Hajiji said civil service efficiency during this period would reflect the government's commitment to democracy and administrative stability. He also called on Department Heads to carry out their responsibilities with stronger commitment, improved efficiency, and closer project monitoring to ensure the timely completion of approved initiatives. Delays, wastage, and damage to public trust must be avoided through proper governance and accountability, said Hajiji. He reminded civil servants to remain responsive, proactive, and to act with integrity, prioritising public interest over personal gain to meet the State Government's objectives. 'Integrity essential to maintain trust in civil service'

KOTA KINABALU: Integrity must remain central to the civil service to sustain public confidence in government institutions, said Sabah Federal Secretary Datuk Seri Rosli Isa. He said the Federal Government spends over RM17 billion annually on civil servant salaries in Sabah, underscoring the size and significance of the public sector. Rosli noted Sabah has more than 126,000 civil servants across federal and state levels, and stressed that maintaining integrity at all levels is crucial for an efficient and trusted system. He said integrity includes moral strength and ethical conduct beyond just avoiding corruption, and that civil servants should not be shielded from investigation if wrongdoing occurs. Trump threatens Japan with up to 35% tariff ahead of deadline

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump criticized Japan's reluctance to accept imports of US rice, as well as the imbalance in auto trade between the two countries. 'I'm not sure we're going to make a deal,' Trump said. 'I doubt it with Japan, they're very tough.' While Trump imposed a sweeping 10 percent tariff on imports from most trading partners in April, he unveiled -- then paused -- higher rates on dozens of economies to allow room for negotiations. This pause expires July 9, meaning the elevated rates are due to kick in next week if countries fail to reach agreements with Washington to avert them. To date, only two pacts have been announced. One was a broad framework with Britain and the other a deal to temporarily lower steep tit-for-tat duties with China. Trump said he was going to write a letter to Japan, asking them to 'pay a 30 percent, 35 percent or whatever the number is that we determine' because of the 'big trade deficit' with Tokyo. 'It's very unfair to the American people,' he said. Japan, a key US ally and its biggest investor, is subject to the same 10 percent baseline tariffs imposed on most nations plus steeper levies on cars, steel and aluminium. Ryosei Akazawa, Tokyo's trade envoy, told Japanese reporters in Washington last month that some progress had been made during a fifth round of talks with the United States.
