Brit tourist walks into Spanish supermarket and is amazed by 'rare' difference

Daily Mirror13-06-2025
A woman has shared a video of the things she found in a Spanish supermarket, and she was left gobsmacked by one thing in particular - and it's something that's very rare in the UK
Sitting in the sun all day and then quenching your thirst with a chilled Fanta Lemon or sharing a packet of Lays is an elite feeling. However, if you're landing in the early hours after a late-night flight, the panic might set in about whether you'll be able to grab snacks and water before morning arrives. The last thing you want is a morning headache.
Fear not if Spain is your destination, as one lady has highlighted that certain supermarkets there keep their doors open until the early morning, which is quite rare back in the UK. Florence Grace highlighted her surprise in her video caption, "Still open at one am?! Spanish supermarkets are the best," and showcased some tempting items she encountered during her visit.

She enthused over the "colour of this Sunny D," and playfully remarked, "you're not in Spain unless you get this," while showing off a jar of Chovi Allioli.

Delving into further exclusive finds, Florence revealed some "biscuit chocolates" reminiscent of Maltesers and described an Oreo milkshake she tasted as "very sickly".
She also exposed the bargain finds, such as a "mini paella" for under three euros and even a full bottle of sangria for less than two euros.
Florence couldn't help but giggle as she pointed out the possibility of buying a carton of wine for merely 99 cents, revealing that it contained a whole litre of booze.
Florence was all praises as she stood by the fresh orange juice machine in a Spanish shop, exclaiming, "This is the best thing about Spanish shops," where customers can freshly squeeze their juice on the spot to ensure its freshness.
As she explored further, Florence marvelled at the frozen lemonades and gestured to a dessert, saying: "You can get a whole cake."

She pointed out that there's no need for an all-inclusive resort when you can easily grab these treats from local supermarkets.
"You can get a whole big bag of muffins," she effused, while perusing the Milka chocolate and chorizo, which were on offer for a mere two euros.
"In Spain, you can get a tub of carrots and a tub of guacamole," she clarified, showcasing the range of salad options ideal for a barbecue with loved ones.

She then scoped out the crisps aisle, drawing attention to "ketchup flavour" varieties before moving on to an ample bag of churros.
Highlighting the affordability of beverages, Florence noted, "I forget how cheap the alcohol is here," as she compared the cost of a single can of San Miguel at 73 cents to bubble tea priced at four euros and 50 cents, a striking contrast for Brits.
"This protein coffee is 20g of protein and zero sugar. What is it made of then?" she pondered aloud. Wrapping up her video, she concluded with enthusiasm "they do the best sweets in Spain".
Moreover, the convenience of late-night shopping means no cravings have to go unaddressed during your holiday.

Barcelona 'hostile city' for visitors as tourist tax doubles to 15 Euros a night

Barcelona has voted to double the tourist tax to €8 by 2029, and the surcharge, added to the Catalan tourist tax, means some tourists will have to pay up to €15 a night Tourists visiting Barcelona are facing paying up to €15 (£13) a night for overnight stays in a shock new move. ‌ The Spanish city has voted to double the controversial tourist tax to €8 (£7) by 2029. The decision was taken yesterday by Barcelona council, with officials agreeing: "The more tourists pay, the less residents will have to." ‌ The tourist tax will rise by €1 (£0.87) each year from now on until it reaches the historic high of €8 in 2029. The measure approved will see the surcharge rise to €5 (£4.3) in 2026, €6 (£5.2) in 2027, €7 (£6.1) in 2028, and finally €8 in 2029 - double Barcelona city's current tourist tax surcharge of €4 (£3.50). ‌ The surcharge is in addition to the Catalan tourist tax, which varies according to the type of accommodation and stay. The Catalan tourist tax is expected to increase later this year, up to €7 per night for five-star hotels, meaning some tourists could face a total charge of €15 in 2029. "The more tourists pay, the less residents will have to," said Esquerra Republicana (ERC) leader Elisenda Alamany after Friday's council session. Her party proposed the surcharge increase, and the measure passed with support from the ruling Socialists, and Barcelona en Comú. Junts abstained while the People's Party (PP) and Vox voted against. ‌ "Managing tourism is common sense in this city," she said ahead of the vote, stressing that the debate wasn't about being for or against tourism, but about shifting perspective: "Recovering that income allows us to ensure balance and build a successful city." Speaking to reporters after the vote, she welcomed the "solid majority" backing the measure, saying the aim was for tourists to contribute more. Deputy Mayor for Economy and Tourism, Jordi Valls, expressed the city government's support for the measure, noting that the tourist surcharge already helps fund key areas such as public transport, safety, and climate initiatives. He said they welcomed the phased approach in ERC's proposal, allowing the sector to adapt gradually as the tax increases. ‌ "The city recognises that tourism is a key part of our economy, but there is consensus that it must be properly managed, and that includes the sector itself," he said. The political parties PP and Vox have rejected the increase in the amount of the surcharge and claim tourism is "criminalised". The PP says it will turn Barcelona "into a city hostile to visitors". The measure is conditional on the Parliament approving, foreseeably in October, a modification of the current limit of this rate. Only with that approval, the city council will be able to include the new calendar of increases in the tax ordinances that must be approved before the end of the year. Elisenda Alamany said: "Governing tourism is no longer to be on the right or the left, it is common sense. If we do not govern tourism, the city changes and will change and it will be even more difficult to continue living."

One of only a handful of success stories from the ITV reality dating show, the couple got engaged in April last year. ‌ The 27-year-old social worker has shared details of her hen do on social media, where she's posted regularly from her Spanish getaway. The first day of her trip saw her and her pals dress up in a cowgirl theme, with the stunning bride-to-be wearing a white outfit and her party all in black. ‌ On the second day of her break abroad, the group dressed in a sunset theme, donning bright pink, red and orange colours for their outfits. They could be seen posing in front of palm trees and drinking cocktails as they excitedly celebrate Sanam's upcoming wedding. ‌ Following a life-drawing session, the group toasted Sanam with Love Island themed champagne flutes. Another post showed her asking her followers to rate their drawings, while another saw one of her party fall asleep at a bar table after all the excitement. Sanam and Kai, both 27, won the second winter series of Love Island in March 2023, with Kai getting down on one knee 13 months later in April last year. The proposal came as a complete shock to Sanam, who believed she was going on a normal date night in Cambridge. ‌ Kai, who is also enjoying his stag do in Barcelona, shared the news of their engagement on Instagram at the time. He wrote: "Introducing the next Mrs Fagan. "Beautiful, Caring, Loving and Smart are just some of the words that describe you. I love loving you, I love you and I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you." Sanam later updated her TikTok followers with a video, explaining she was told to dress "cute and warm" for their punting boat date night. She said: "So I'm currently about to get ready for a date night with Kai that he has set up that I know nothing about. ‌ "All I know is that I need to dress cute and warm. I'm getting ready in my mum's house, I'm in my old room." The former reality star, who has since returned to her day job as a social worker, admitted she didn't get many photos and videos of the big moment as it took her by surprise. She explained: "Okay, the biggest thing just happened! ‌ "We don't have many videos of the proposal but I did not expect or see this coming. I honestly thought it was just a random date night that Kai had put together but yeah, I am so shocked and happy!" After she said yes, the couple went for a romantic meal out together. They returned to a hotel room that was adorned with decorations, including balloons, petals and photos showing some of their best times together. Sanam added: "Did I just say yes to the cutest guy in the world?" The couple are set to get married next week on August 1.
