Khabib Nurmagomedov makes ‘beautiful' claim over rival Conor McGregor's personal life
McGregor has not fought since 2021, when he suffered a broken leg in a second straight loss to Dustin Poirier, and the former champion's past triumphs have been overshadowed by legal battles in recent years.
Last week, McGregor lost an appeal against the verdict of a civil rape case, in which a woman won a claim against him in November. The Irishman, 37, continues to deny the accusations against him.
McGregor has also expressed a desire to run for the presidency in Ireland, with many of his recent social-media posts proving divisive as he has explained his stance on immigration and other issues.
Yet Nurmagomedov, who retired unbeaten as the UFC lightweight champion in 2020, has said there is a way for McGregor to emerge from what has appeared to be a chaotic period in his life and career.
The Russian, who submitted McGregor in their 2018 title fight to end one of the bitterest rivalries in UFC history, discussed the matter at Tilles Center in New York on Sunday (3 August).
'I don't want to mention his name,' Nurmagomedov said. 'This is punishment, this is punishment. And he keeps doing this, keeps doing this, keeps doing this. Everything that happened [...] woman this, alcohol this, drugs, everything.'
Nurmagomedov was, in part, referring to McGregor's admission during his civil rape case that he had taken drugs, while the Russian elsewhere mentioned a 2019 incident in which the Irishman pleaded guilty to assault after punching a man in a bar.
'But the most beautiful part of this,' Nurmagomedov, 36, continued, '[is] Allah always gives for us – it doesn't matter, anybody, everybody – a chance to come back. Always, in this world, a chance to come back.
'This is the most beautiful thing. It doesn't matter how you're bad, Allah is going to give you a chance to always come back. I think he has a chance, and he has to change the way how he's living.
'Why am I talking about this? [...] If he's going to change, he can change with him so many lives, too. And that's why I wish him to change himself.'
The Independent approached McGregor's representatives for comment on Nurmagomedov's interview.
In the build-up to their 2018 fight, McGregor threw a dolly at the window of a bus in which Nurmagomedov and other UFC athletes were sitting. He was charged with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief, then was further charged with menacing and reckless endangerment at his arraignment.
McGregor pleaded no contest to a count of disorderly conduct and was ordered to perform five days of community service and attend anger management classes.
The former two-weight champion , as he targets a return to the mixed martial arts promotion.
He has expressed an interest in competing on a potential fight card at the White House, an event mentioned by US president Donald Trump in recent weeks. Trump, who attends UFC events semi-regularly, is a friend of UFC president Dana White.

Democrat John Fetterman is striking a different position on the release of the Jeffrey Epstein files from the rest of his party. Donald Trump's administration continues to be embroiled in controversy over the release of the secret files of former financier and convicted pedophile. His Attorney General Pam Bondi is at the center of the drama as she's refused to put out the documents despite urging from the MAGA right and Democrats on the left. Fetterman, the only Democrat to vote for Bondi to be confirmed as attorney general earlier this year, offered a new take on the drama. The senator exclusively told the Daily Mail last week that 'everybody thinks that' Bondi should release the files. But he says he's 'not preoccupied' with them, unlike many of his colleagues in both political parties. 'You know, we've had it for four years before, and we didn't release it,' he said about the ex-Joe Biden administration. 'So, you know, I don't, I don't, I don't really think about it much,' Fetterman added, seemingly throwing his own political party under the bus. However, Democrats are now seizing on the files as way to put Republicans on the spot heading into the midterm elections. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer called for an FBI investigation last week into whether foreign governments are trying to use the Epstein files against Trump. Democrats have seized on Trump's reluctance to release the files as a political vulnerability heading into next year's midterm elections. Schumer's latest escalation is an attempt to elevate the scandal to having potential national security implications. At a press conference during his trip to Scotland in late July, Trump said that all of the hubbub about the files was a 'hoax.' He also noted that the 'files were run by sick, sick people' during the last administration and suggested they 'put things in the file that was a fake.' Trump is known to have run in the same social circles as Epstein, and the two were photographed at events together in the late 1990's and early 2000s. Their friendship doesn't mean the president took part in any inappropriate activity. A Wall Street Journal Report released earlier this month reported that Trump was one of Epstein's friends who wrote him a letter for his 50th birthday in 2003, accompanied by a sketch of a naked woman, prompting president to deny that reporting and sue the paper. Another report by the paper revealed that Bondi told Trump his name was included in the files multiple times, sparking theories as to why the DOJ is refusing to release the full documents. Bondi has been reluctant to release the files, and called last month for a grand jury to release the transcripts from the criminal cases of Epstein and his top accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. Trump himself said that he was the one who pushed Bondi to call for the release of the transcripts. 'Based on the ridiculous amount of publicity given to Jeffrey Epstein, I have asked Attorney General Pam Bondi to produce any and all pertinent Grand Jury testimony, subject to Court approval,' Trump wrote in a July 17 post on his social media site Truth Social. 'This SCAM, perpetuated by the Democrats, should end, right now!' The Trump administration's refusal to release the full Epstein files dominated the news cycle for most of July and both the president's political allies and adversaries are growing weary. Donald Trump once said he could shoot a man on Fifth Avenue and get away with it. But the scandal is proving difficult to tamp down. A rebel band of Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives including some of MAGA's biggest stars - like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Lauren Boebert - have even joined forces with hundreds of Democrats to force a bombshell ballot on the Epstein files. Despite the typical partisan battle lines being drawn on most issues in Washington, D.C. these days, this matter in particular has created an unlikely set of bedfellows. Progressive Democrat Ro Khanna and libertarian-minded Republican Thomas Massie of Kentucky teamed up last week to introduce the Epstein Files Transparency Act, which would compel Attorney General Pam Bondi to publicly release all unclassified materials relating to Jeffrey Epstein. The duo's resolution is receiving the the backing of a diverse set of members, including New York socialist darling Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Michigan 'Squad' member Rashida Tlaib, as well as Boebert of Colorado, Nancy Mace of South Carolina, and Greene of Georgia. Even if only the 10 GOP co-sponsors of the resolution were to support it, it would easily pass the House as just a simple majority is need, which is 218 votes out of 435. Speaker Mike Johnson sent the House home for the August recess before a vote on Khanna and Massie's resolution could be held.

The Lions will endure … but who can we expect in the squad for 2029?
The average worker bee, in the busiest months of the year, generally lives for up to seven weeks. Talk about a short and sweet existence. It is not dissimilar with British & Irish Lions tours. One moment players are winning a major series, the next their team abruptly ceases to exist. That's all, folks, unless you can make the next trip in four years. That is a lifetime for many professional athletes, particularly those who routinely operate on a week-to-week basis and are about to enjoy a long-awaited summer break. So you would expect someone like England's Ben Earl to roll his eyes and change the subject when asked if he would like to be involved in the scheduled next men's tour to New Zealand in 2029. Instead, the 27-year-old flanker sounded as if he would happily jump on a plane to Auckland tomorrow morning if asked. 'If someone said to me I could go on the next one, I'd do anything. Everyone talks about the aura around the badge, the honour … it has not been lost on me or anyone else. I've seen people potentially play their last game in the shirt and what it means. I'd do anything to play for the Lions one last time.' Right there, in a red-shirted nutshell, is the reason the Lions concept continues to endure. For as long as it remains a priority for the players, the old-school dream will live on. For as long as a series triumph feels like the ultimate challenge, or at least comparable with winning a Rugby World Cup, supporters will also be attracted like, well, bees to a honey pot. Even as they fly back north people have already been scribbling down their putative 2029 team (see below) on the back of their boarding passes. And the usual banter is already starting. Will there be any more than a couple of Irish players in a mostly Welsh-dominated squad. What price Owen Farrell going on a fifth Lions tour? After all he will only be 37. And so on. It is actually an interesting exercise given the probability that a sizeable chunk of this year's tour party are unlikely to return. Even Maro Itoje, who will be 34, might conceivably have moved on to a fresh challenge in business or politics by then. If so Dan Sheehan, who must be close to establishing himself as the world's best hooker, might well enter the captaincy equation with a fit-again, motivated Caelan Doris another possible contender. Beyond that there are a good few gaps to fill in. Who will be the tactical driving force, for example, if Finn Russell has hung up his Test boots? Fin Smith or Sam Prendergast? Might we see Louis Rees-Zammit, minus his gridiron helmet and shoulder pads, back in a Lions jersey? And could 2029 be the tour where someone like Manny Feyi-Waboso becomes a serious global star if he has not already done so at the next Rugby World Cup back in Australia in two years' time? Questions, questions. The assumption is that Andy Farrell will be reinstalled as head coach having presided over the 2-1 series victory against the Wallabies. But if he is otherwise engaged, to whom might the Lions turn? Steve Borthwick? Or perhaps Ronan O'Gara, who has worked in New Zealand and made no secret of his desire to coach at international level one day. An O'Gara-steered Lions tour would certainly not be dull, always assuming his present employers La Rochelle were even vaguely on side. All of this idle speculation, however, is based on the landscape of global rugby union remaining broadly as it is. Which, depending to whom you talk, is by no means certain. Those trying to set up the R360 global rebel league, involving a Formula One-style calendar of matches in different cities worldwide, are actively courting the world's leading male and female players and claiming it will be ready to launch in September next year. Among those said to have been approached, for example, are the entire English Red Roses squad, hardly surprising given the more modest sums of money on offer in the women's professional game. And if the organisers' stated objective is to pay the best 40 men's players in the world about £1m a year for a much shorter season, you can see why a few old-timers near the end of their careers might be interested. The catch is that the R360 season could intersect with the Lions 'window' in rugby's ever-congested calendar. At which point a few players – and remember this is all theoretical – would have a decision to make. Stick with tradition in the form of an intense series between the Lions and New Zealand or follow the mega money? Welcome to a major clash of cultures and philosophies wearily familiar to golf fans since LIV parked its tanks on the fairways of the established order. You would hope that the allure of facing the All Blacks and following in the footsteps of legends would still count for something. Then again, the agents punting the R360 scheme will rightly be reminding their clients that careers can be cut short by injury at any moment. Earl's aforementioned words, even so, are worth pinning up on every clubhouse wall in Britain and Ireland. Clearly rugby cannot afford to be allergic to change but, equally, its soul needs preserving. While the Lions become less romantic and more commercially rapacious with each passing year, there remains a lot of love for them out there. R360 might be offering eye-watering amounts of dosh but you cannot put a price on lifelong friendships and true sporting fulfilment. Pete Alonso eyes Mets' homer mark in matchup with Guardians
August 5 - Pete Alonso inched closer to the New York Mets' all-time home run record on Monday. The Cleveland Guardians' unlikely playoff push took another small step forward, too. The Guardians will look to clinch a series win on Tuesday when they visit the Mets in the middle contest of a three-game interleague set. Left-hander Logan Allen (7-9, 4.06 ERA) is slated to start against Mets right-hander Clay Holmes (9-6, 3.45). Gabriel Arias homered and finished with four RBIs on Monday for the Guardians, who overcame squandering a five-run lead to edge the Mets 7-6 in 10 innings. Alonso socked a three-run shot in the sixth inning, the 251st homer of his career, one shy of Darryl Strawberry's record Mets total. The long ball began the comeback for the Mets, who tied the game in the eighth and had the bases loaded with one out in the ninth. Alonso, who hit an RBI single in the eighth, struck out in the ninth against Cade Smith before Jeff McNeil lined out. The Guardians scored twice in the 10th, when automatic runner Daniel Schneemann came home from second on a throwing error by third baseman Brett Baty before Arias added a sacrifice fly. The chaotic win improved the Guardians to 17-7 since July 7 -- the third-best record in the majors in that span behind only the Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox. Cleveland is 2 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees and Seattle Mariners, who are tied for the last two American League wild-card spots. The Guardians were seven games out of the last playoff spot through July 6. Cleveland has mounted its push despite the absence of starting pitcher Luis L.
