AI-based monitoring for BC hostels soon
A dedicated mobile app is being developed for this purpose, she revealed during a review meeting with hostel welfare officers (HWOs) and BC welfare officers here on Wednesday.
The meeting focused on hostel maintenance and government initiatives to improve student facilities. Minister Savitha emphasised the need for efficient hostel management and directed officials to complete student admissions by August 5.
She also addressed issues with the Facial Recognition-based Attendance System (FRS), instructing officers to report disruptions to higher authorities promptly. Highlighting the NDA government's commitment, the minister noted that pending bills have been cleared swiftly.
She mandated that HWOs reside in hostels at night to ensure continuous monitoring and better care for students, urging them to treat students like their own children. Additionally, she has been conducting surprise inspections of BC hostels and MJP schools across various districts.
The minister instructed district BC welfare officers to conduct regular hostel visits, stay overnight when possible, and submit a tour diary to the state office by the 5th of each month.
She also announced that repair works in BC hostels, funded with Rs 13 crore, are underway. Toilets are being constructed using Swachhandhra Corporation funds, with all projects targeted for completion by August 30.
Officials were urged to submit bills promptly to expedite fund releases. To enhance health and safety, RO water plants and CCTV cameras will be installed in all BC hostels.
Chandrasekhar Raju, director of BC welfare, Madhavilatha, secretary of MJP schools, and other officials attended the meeting.

HC asks for trial court order in Pawan Kalyan defamation case
Vijayawada: The high court on Friday asked the petitioners to file a certified copy of the trial court order allowing the withdrawal of prosecution against deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan in the case registered over his alleged objectionable comments made on volunteers. However, after the NDA govt came to power, five volunteers, who were also complainants in the case, deposed before the trial court stating that YSRCP leaders took their signatures and filed petitions before the court without their knowledge. Considering the affidavits and statements given by the complainants, the trial court allowed the withdrawal of prosecution.

Naranpura woman loses Rs 15L to ‘digital arrest' scam
Ahmedabad: A 53-year-old woman from Naranpura area in the city was duped of Rs 15 lakh by a man posing as a Mumbai police officer in an 'digital arrest' scam. The woman was at home with her elderly mother-in-law on June 30 when she received a phone call that triggered the scam. For the nexe The caller identified himself as a police officer from Andheri police station in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and claimed that a bank account had been fraudulently opened in her name in Navi Mumbai using her Aadhaar number. He alleged that the account was being used for illegal activities, including money laundering. The fraudster sought her personal and bank account details, claiming her accounts needed to be verified. Over the next three days, the woman and her daughter visited multiple banks and transferred Rs 15 lakh in instalments into accounts shared by the caller. The caller warned her that her husband, who works in Qatar, could also face trouble if she failed to cooperate. The scam came to light when her son-in-law visited and noticed she was still on a call with the supposed police officer. He immediately disconnected the call and reported the incident to the cybercrime helpline 1930. A formal complaint was later filed at the local police station. Authorities are working to trace the phone number and bank accounts involved in the fraud.

Man gets 20 yrs in jail for raping girl, 15, in 2020
A gra: A court in Muzaffarnagar on Friday sentenced a 40-year-old man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a 15-year-old girl at a village in the district five years ago. Court also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict. According to district govt counsel Rajeev Sharma, the crime happened in Nov 2020 when the minor girl was raped in an agri field by a man from the same village. Following a complaint by the survivor's father, a case was registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and under Pocso Act. The accused was arrested and sent to jail. Weeks later, police submitted a chargesheet in the court.
