AI-based monitoring for BC hostels soon

Vijayawada: BC welfare minister S Savitha announced that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will soon monitor Backward Classes (BC) hostels across the state to enhance accountability and service quality. A dedicated mobile app is being developed for this purpose, she revealed during a review meeting with hostel welfare officers (HWOs) and BC welfare officers here on Wednesday. The meeting focused on hostel maintenance and government initiatives to improve student facilities. Minister Savitha emphasised the need for efficient hostel management and directed officials to complete student admissions by August 5. She also addressed issues with the Facial Recognition-based Attendance System (FRS), instructing officers to report disruptions to higher authorities promptly. Highlighting the NDA government's commitment, the minister noted that pending bills have been cleared swiftly. She mandated that HWOs reside in hostels at night to ensure continuous monitoring and better care for students, urging them to treat students like their own children. Additionally, she has been conducting surprise inspections of BC hostels and MJP schools across various districts. The minister instructed district BC welfare officers to conduct regular hostel visits, stay overnight when possible, and submit a tour diary to the state office by the 5th of each month. She also announced that repair works in BC hostels, funded with Rs 13 crore, are underway. Toilets are being constructed using Swachhandhra Corporation funds, with all projects targeted for completion by August 30. Officials were urged to submit bills promptly to expedite fund releases. To enhance health and safety, RO water plants and CCTV cameras will be installed in all BC hostels. Chandrasekhar Raju, director of BC welfare, Madhavilatha, secretary of MJP schools, and other officials attended the meeting.

Investigation into Gangapur dam water pipeline will reveal truth, says MLA Dhikale

Nashik: An investigation ordered by Madhuri Misal, the minister of state for urban development, into the controversial Rs 175-crore direct water supply pipeline from the Gangapur dam to Nashik will reveal the truth and be in the interest of the taxpayers of Nashik city," said Rahul Dhikale, the Nashik East MLA. The work on laying the direct water pipeline from the Gangapur dam to Nashik city is currently underway because the old pipeline, laid about 25 years ago, has been experiencing frequent breakdowns and repairs. Divisional commissioner Praveen Gedam was directed to conduct the inquiry. Dhikale objected to the work procedure followed by the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) and the contractor in the construction of the pipeline, claiming they did not adhere to the guidelines of the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran and the terms and conditions outlined by the NMC in the tender awarded to the contractor. "It is unbelievable that NMC made the payment of Rs 75 crore to the contractor in the beginning when the Rs 175crore work had only commenced and was yet to gather pace," claimed Dhikale, adding that there were other issues as well. "The contract, as per the guidelines of the MJP, was for laying six metres of pipes each, but the contractor used 12-metre pipes in the work. The contractor neither consulted the MJP nor the NMC regarding this matter. If it saves on the cost of the works, then that benefit should be transferred to the civic body directly," said the MLA. He further alleged that the raw materials used for construction were not sourced from the recommended companies and were instead sourced from companies based outside a 200km radius of the city, one of the contract's norms. This was the reason Dhikale raised the objection in the House, following which the minister of state ordered the inquiry.

State Orders Third-Party Audit Amid Alarming Quality Concerns in AMRUT 2.0 Projects

Nagpur: Amid rising complaints of shoddy execution and deteriorating public infrastructure, the Maharashtra govt on June 30 issued a Government Resolution (GR) directing Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP) to implement Third Party Technical Audits (TPTA) for all ongoing works under the Rs10,513 crore Amrut 2.0 mission. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The decision comes in the wake of mounting criticism over substandard work in key projects—particularly those being executed by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). These include the Rs381 crore water supply augmentation project and the Rs900 crore Pora River Pollution Abatement scheme, both under Amrut 2.0. The pollution abatement project has already drawn public ire. NMC Commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari slapped a Rs1 crore cumulative fine on three contractors for botched restoration after sewer line work across southwest and south Nagpur. Another firm involved in the water supply augmentation project was also penalised for execution lapses. Dug-up roads in affected areas continue to torment motorists, with private agencies ignoring repeated warnings to complete proper restoration. Despite funds pouring in and clear directives from the civic administration, on-ground execution remained sloppy—sparking outrage among residents and raising doubts about project oversight. The Amrut 2.0 (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) was rolled out in Maharashtra in July 2022 and spans from FY 2021–22 to 2025–26. Of the Rs10,513 crore outlay, Rs9,285 crore is earmarked for project implementation, with the rest reserved for reform incentives and administrative expenses. To plug the accountability gap, the state has now asked MJP, which functions as the Project Development and Management Consultant (PDMC), to prepare a Request for Proposal (RFP) within two weeks to empanel qualified technical auditors. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The process will be overseen by the State Level Technical Committee (SLTC), which has also been empowered to revise the audit's scope as needed. Audit expenses will be drawn from the Amrut administrative fund, subject to the Centre's approval. If denied, the state will bear the cost separately. A senior NMC official said MJP earlier engaged a third-party auditor, but the audit contract ended—triggering the current process to appoint a new agency. However, critics argue the govt has been slow to act, allowing poor-quality work to continue unchecked for months. As the mission enters its crucial final stretch, the govt's move to institutionalise independent technical scrutiny may be the only way to salvage public confidence and ensure taxpayer money doesn't go down the drain—literally.
