It's the common question that's an instant connection killer.
When meeting someone new, it's not unusual to enquire about what that person does for work — but a body language expert says it's a surefire way to get off on the wrong foot.
Vanessa Van Edwards, the author of 'Captivate: The Science of Succeeding with People' made the claim in an interview on The Diary of a CEO podcast, which has resurfaced after being recorded last year.
'Stop asking 'What do you do?'' Van Edwards declared. 'That is telling them their brain can stay on autopilot. Asking someone that question is really asking 'What are you worth?''
Because you may be subtly sizing up your new acquaintance with such a query, the expert asserted that the question is impolite.
'If someone's not defined by what they do, it's actually a rude question,' Van Edwards stated. 'You can replace it with 'Working on anything exciting these days?' or 'Working on anything exciting recently?'
She explained that such questions allow people to answer in the way they feel most comfortable, possibly opening up the conversation to create more possibilities for connection.
While most may choose to discuss their occupation, others will use the questions as opportunities to speak about an exciting hobby they are working on or a holiday they are planning.
'This is permission connection,' Van Edwards said. 'You ask someone that question, you are giving them permission if they want to tell you about what they do.'
Van Edwards has also made headlines for revealing the questions you need to ask a spouse if you're in a struggling marriage.
'Ask, 'What's going on? Are you OK? What are you feeling? I want to be here for it.' Because then you're giving air to whatever that contempt is so that it can be addressed,' the communications maven told The Unplanned Podcast earlier this year.

The MCU actor revealed that, in response, he listed three conditions that the fans have been asking for. Diesel said the first condition was to bring the franchise back to Los Angeles, California, which served as the setting of the first movie, 2001's The Fast and the Furious. The second thing, according to the actor, was returning the narrative to the car culture, the street racing. While the earlier movies in the franchise heavily focused on cars and the culture around them, later entries gradually shifted away from that. The third condition, Diesel revealed, was 'reuniting Dom (Diesel) and Brian O'Conner.' He added, 'That is what you gonna get in the finale,' indicating that Universal has agreed to his conditions. Paul Walker last portrayed Brian in 2015's Furious 7. He died in a tragic vehicular accident two years earlier. Walker's brothers, Cody and Caleb, and John Brotherton served as stand-ins for him for certain scenes in Furious 7. The 2023 release Fast X had archival footage featuring Walker's character. Like, I am married, I have four children, I'm going to order a fake ring. So I did a fake cubic zirconia, whatever,' she says with a laugh. Years later, her husband bought her a new wedding set, but nothing could replace the sentimental value of the original. 'I was 19 years old. He was 21, we were broke. I mean, this ring's maybe a little less than half a carat. It's 'little,' but it's so sweet and means so much,' Dana reflects. Even with a newer set, her heart always longed for the ring she chose as a teenager. The rediscovery comes at a poignant time for Dana and her family. 'We will be celebrating 31 years this year. We had our vow renewal last year on the beach,' she shares. The ring's return feels like a blessing as her family enters a new chapter: three of her four children are now married, with her youngest preparing for their nuptials later this year, and the house is undergoing a transformation of its own. 'To think about it makes me teary,' Dana admits. 'Because now my kids are 27, 26, 23 and 20, and when you raised a family in the same house and we've had ups, we've had downs. Our family is super close.' 'And so for me, it holds even a special place because that ring was there all along. Even though the ring is a ring, it's a metal, but still it's like it was there all along when life was happening all around it,' she adds, reflecting on the decades of family life that unfolded around her lost treasure. My kids are out of the nest. 'I felt like at some point God had promised that one day I would see that ring again, and I did not know how or what or when, but just every time we would do a big clean-out of the house — or we did put our house on the market six years ago and it didn't sell — and I just always felt like at some point that ring was going to come back to me somehow some way because it never made sense how it just vanished,' she continues.
