Chris Ewert Released After Massive Weight Miss at UFC 317
Chris Ewert Released After Massive Weight Miss at UFC 317 originally appeared on Athlon Sports.
UFC 317 is finally here and arrives this Saturday at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, promising a stacked card for International Fight Week. While all eyes are on the main event, the drama didn't wait for the pay-per-view to begin. One undefeated fighter on the prelims nearly stole the spotlight for all the wrong reasons, turning what was supposed to be his breakout moment into a cautionary tale.

Chris Ewert, a 31-year-old middleweight from Chile, was set to make his UFC debut against Jackson McVey after stepping in on short notice. For a fighter nicknamed "El Tanke," the opportunity should've been a chance to crash into the UFC with power and pressure.

Instead, Ewert imploded at the scale—showing up a full 10 pounds over the limit. No second chances. Just a canceled fight and a swift release from the promotion.
Aaron Bronsteter broke the news on X, quoting UFC commentator Jon Anik:
'Jackson McVey vs. Chris Ewert is OFF per Jon Anik. Ewert was going to be several pounds overweight and has subsequently been cut from the UFC roster.'
Originally, Ewert had a much different path ahead. He was booked to compete on Dana White's Contender Series on August 2 against Yuri Panferov. But when Sedriques Dumas was forced out of UFC 317 due to legal issues involving a GPS ankle monitor, Ewert got the nod. MMA News reported that he accepted the short-notice opportunity in hopes of fast-tracking his UFC debut. It was a high-risk, high-reward call.

Unfortunately, the risk caught up fast. For a fighter who was undefeated with a highlight reel full of knockouts, the weight miss wasn't just a mistake—it was a missed moment. In a sport where second chances are rare and first impressions are everything, Ewert's UFC story ended before it could even begin.

Dana White and the UFC took swift action, making it clear that the organization won't hesitate to enforce standards—even with undefeated prospects.

Predators acquire and sign D Hague to 4-year deal in trade that sends C Scissons, D Lauzon to Vegas
The Nashville Predators acquired defenseman Nicolas Hague in a three-player trade that sent center Colton Sissons and defenseman Jeremy Lauzon to the Vegas Golden Knights, a person with knowledge of the deal confirmed to the Associated Press early Monday. In completing the trade, the Predators also agreed to sign Hague to a four-year $22 million, the person added and spoke on the condition of anonymity because the trade has not been announced. TSN first reported the trade taking place. The 26-year-old Hague was a pending restricted free agent who had the right to go to arbitration after completing his sixth season. At 6-foot-6, he's a hard-hitting, defensive-minded player who had five goals and 12 points in 68 games. Overall, he has 20 goals and 83 points in 364 games, all with Vegas. The trade comes as teams shuffle their rosters ahead of the NHL's free agency signing period, which opens Tuesday. The Predators are retooling their lineup after missing the playoffs for the second time in three years. The Golden Knights essentially freed up salary cap space by removing the uncertainty of what they stood in having to pay Hague, for the cost-certainty of adding two players entering the final years of their respective contracts. Vegas has been mentioned as a potential landing spot for Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mitch Marner, who is regarded as the top free agent set to enter the market. The 31-year-old Sissons leaves Nashville after spending his entire 11-season career with the Predators. He has one year left on his seven-year contract and represents a $2.86 million cap hit. Sissons had seven goals and 21 points in 72 games last year, and has 95 goals and 221 points in 691 career outings. Lauzon, 28, represents a $2 million cap hit. He has seven seasons of NHL experience and was limited to an assist in 28 games last year before sustaining a season-ending lower body injury. ___ AP NHL:

Nicolas Hague signs 4-year contract after trade from Vegas to Nashville: Report
The Vegas Golden Knights traded defenseman Nicolas Hague to the Nashville Predators for forward Colton Sissons and defenseman Jeremy Lauzon Sunday night, according to a report by TSN's Darren Dreger. Hague was a pending restricted free agent in need of a new deal — and a sizable raise. Rather than signing him, the Golden Knights opted to trade him to the Predators, who immediately signed the 26-year-old defenseman to a four-year contract worth $5.5 million per year, Dreger reported. Hague had a cap hit of $2.3 million this season. Advertisement Hague is a big, rangy defenseman who played mostly bottom-pair minutes in Vegas, but has proven he's capable of playing on the top pair for stretches. He has a big slap shot, kills penalties and totaled 20 career goals and 63 assists in six years with the Golden Knights. Based on his usage in Vegas, the $5.5 million cap hit feels a bit steep, but he received few offensive opportunities behind several offensively gifted blueliners in Vegas. If the Predators find a way to use his booming slap shot from the point more often, he could have more upside than his stats show. In return, Vegas added another bottom-six forward in Sissons. The 31-year-old had only 21 points in 72 games last season in Nashville, and has one year left on his contract with a cap hit of $2,857,143. He had played his entire 11-year NHL career with the Predators, registering 95 goals and 126 assists in 690 games. Lauzon, 28, had one assist in only 28 games for the Predators last season after suffering a season-ending lower-body injury in late December. He is also entering the final year of his contract with a cap hit of $2 million. Hague's raise to $5.5 million per year is quite a big bump up from his previous $2.3 million cap hit. It's understandable if the Golden Knights didn't think they could fit that into their tight cap situation, which could get even tighter if they win the Mitch Marner sweepstakes. Along those lines, there were reports on Saturday that Vegas' fourth line center, Nicolas Roy, could be included in a trade to Toronto for Marner's rights. If Roy is moved, Sissons would be an excellent fit to replace Roy's minutes, both at even strength and on the penalty kill. It is a bit curious that a team looking to shed Hague's salary ended up taking back nearly $5 million in cap hit in this deal. It suggests that the Golden Knights are far from done when it comes to moves this summer.

Ilia Topuria Opens As Substantial Betting Favorite Over Paddy Pimblett
LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JUNE 28: (L-R) Ilia Topuria of Spain faces off against Paddy Pimblett in the UFC ... More lightweight championship bout during the UFC 317 event at T-Mobile Arena on June 28, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) Ilia Topuria is the new UFC lightweight champion, and he may have already stood face-to-face with his next opponent, Paddy Pimblett. The former UFC featherweight kingpin dispatched ex-UFC lightweight titleholder Charles Oliveira with relative ease on Saturday night in the main event of UFC 317. Topuria, who picked up a 'Performance of the Night' bonus after he draped UFC gold over his shoulder, knocked out Oliveira 2:27 into the first round of their matchup at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The backup fighter for the UFC 317 main event was No. 1 ranked contender Arman Tsarukyan, who weighed in on Friday just in case he was needed. However, in the aftermath of Topuria's knockout win over Oliveira, Tsarukyan was largely forgotten as fans, pundits, and the UFC commentary team turned their eyes to the No. 8 ranked Paddy Pimblett, who Joe Rogan invited into the cage, much to the chagrin of UFC CEO Dana White. Topuria and Pimblett exchanged words and a shove from the newly crowned champ inside the cage. After the fight, the two had much to say about a potential title fight between them. More Charles Oliveira of Brazil in the UFC lightweight championship bout during the UFC 317 event at T-Mobile Arena on June 28, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by Jeff Bottari/Zuffa LLC) "Yes, that's the fight that I want because with Charles it was a little bit of a difficult situation because I really like the guy," Topuria said at the UFC 317 post-fight press conference. "He's a really great human being. You can't hate him. You always see him surrounded by his family and friends and teammates. He's an amazing human being, but in the end, I was like, 'This is competition. I have to do my job and that's it.' But with Paddy, I'm really going to enjoy kicking his ass." "I could be ready by the need of the year if they want me," Topuria said of his potential first 155-pound title defense. "If I get the call from the UFC, and they want me to get back in the octagon by the end of the year, I'll be ready." More exchange words after Topuria won the lightweight main event title during UFC 317 at T-Mobile Arena on June 28, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by) "You don't even need to sell that fight – it sells itself," Pimblett said on ESPN's UFC 317 post-fight show. "Two people who genuinely dislike each other. We don't really get that. We haven't seen that since Khabib and McGregor, two people who actually hate each other. Because I hate him. I wouldn't want to finish him fast, I would want to finish him with a minute left in the fight after I've elbowed him 700 times. I'd want to disfigure him." "I'm more motivated when I'm like that, especially the fact that everyone thinks I'll lose," Pimblett added. "Everyone thinks I'll lose. Nine out of 10 people probably think he'll knock me out. I love proving people wrong. It just gives me this warm, fuzzy feeling inside making people eat their own words. "I cannot wait. I can't be booked with anyone else now. It's a simple as that. I am fighting him next and I am going to take his little head off for him." Ilia Topuria Vs. Paddy Pimblett Opening Betting Odds When BetOnline published the opening odds for a potential title fight between Topuria and Pimblett, the champ was listed as the -600 favorite over Pimblett, who was a +450 betting underdog. Those odds have already shifted, and as of now, Topuria is -500 to Pimblett's +385. Dana White On Ilia Topuria Vs. (Photo by Chris Unger/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images) "I don't know who the hell let him in there," White said after the event after Topuria shoved Pimblett in the Octagon. "That should've never happened. Let's start there. I was already back in my room, or that would've never happened." 'My thing with Topuria is his wife and kid are in the octagon. That's not the fight. It's just, yeah. It shouldn't happen. That's not really what we do. I don't really give a sh*t if it's fun to watch or not. That shouldn't have happened. Plus, he wins a second title in a higher division. It was a bad call by whoever let him in there,' White continued. As for the fight actually happening, White did not commit to the matchup. 'We'll see,' White said. 'We'll see how this plays out.' The Origin Of The Ilia Topuria And Paddy Pimblett Conflict LAS VEGAS, NEVADA - JUNE 28: Ilia Topuria of Georgia looks on after knocking out Charles Oliveira of ... More Brazil to win the lightweight main event title in the first round during UFC 317 at T-Mobile Arena on June 28, 2025 in Las Vegas, Nevada. (Photo by) Topuria and Pimblett have had beef since 2021, when Pimblett got into an online argument with UFC fighter Guram Kutateladze, who hails from the country of Georgia. During that back-and-forth, Pimblett posted a since-deleted remark, "Lad how stupid are these Georgians man, no wonder the Russians terrorise their lives.'" That remark led to a confrontation in the fighter hotel in London in March 2022, where a punch and a bottle of hand sanitizer were thrown. "It didn't happen because he called me something yesterday. It comes from a long time ago," Topuria explained at the time on The MMA Hour. "He was arguing with one of my close friends once on Twitter, and he posted [something] like, 'Now I understand why Russia destroyed Georgia because you're dumb,' and it makes my blood boil. When I saw it, I was surprised. I didn't believe it when I saw that tweet because in 2008, I was living in Georgia when the war happened, and it was a very difficult time for me, for my family, for all my friends, and for my country. A lot of innocent people, kids, were dying in that war. "And to see how someone is joking about that, it makes my blood boil," Topuria continued. "So I texted with him, I don't remember what I tweeted, and when they gave me the fight in London, he text me like three weeks ago, like, 'I can't wait to see you in London. We'll see if you have the balls to tell me everything you texted me on Twitter.' Bulls—t." "Can you imagine if I started to make some jokes about the war, where their children are dying, where people are suffering?" Topuria continued. "You can't talk about that. So this is why. "The same situation [happened to us], we were living in Georgia in 2008," Topuria added. "The same situation. I was living there, and a lot of guys from my class, my friends, I saw all of them out there, their parents were dying in the war, and crazy situations — I can't even explain how the situation was at that time. [It bothers me] when I hear someone joking about that." Topuria and Pimblett fought on that London card with Topuria knocking out Jai Herbert in the first round of their lightweight bout. Meanwhile, Pimblett defeated Kazula Vargas via submission. Both men earned "Performance of the Night" bonuses for their wins. The Topuria Vs. Pimblett Beef Continues LAS VEGAS, NV - DECEMBER 8: Ilia Topuria and Paddy Pimblett held back by security during a shouting ... More match at the UFC 282 pre-fight press conference on December 8, 2022, at the MGM Garden Grand Arena in Las Vegas, NV. (Photo by Amy Kaplan/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) Topuria and Pimblett reignited their feud in December 2022 when they shared a stage for the UFC 282 press conference. During that press conference, Pimblett said to Topuria, 'Are you talking English? English? Speak English for the people, lad, not German or Spanish like you're from, you mongrel. You pretend to be Georgian, but you're not. You were born in Germany, and you live in Spain. You were born in Germany, and you live in Spain. You're a little mongrel. That's what you are. You're a little mongrel.' Those words did not sit well with Topuria, as he stood and threatened Pimblett during the event before things seemed to cool down, at least at the time. Both men fought on the PPV card on that event, with Topuria opening the main card with a submission win over Bryce Mitchell. Meanwhile, Pimblett defeated Jared Gordon via decision in the co-main event that night. Topuria earned a "Performance of the Night" bonus for his stoppage. We will have more on Topuria vs. Pimblett as news becomes available.
