Bermuda shorts are surprisingly flattering – if you get the length right

Telegraph3 hours ago

It's safe to say that the prospect of shorts is, for many, unnerving. They can bring up all kinds of conundrums, from how to elegantly bring sun-starved legs out of a prolonged period of hibernation to which length to go for. Luckily, recent catwalks and current collections have been fairly unanimous in their endorsement of one particular style: Bermuda shorts.
With a traditionally straight cut and longer length, the style is named after the island on which it is said to have originated. Some say they were conceived by heat-stricken British soldiers taking a pair of scissors to their uniforms, while others claim the inspiration came from local tea shop owner Nathaniel Coxon, who devised them for his staff. Whatever the precise source, they've been all over the catwalks for both men and women at the likes of Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Fendi and Chanel in everything from chalky linen to checked wool.
The message has been very much received; John Lewis reports that searches for Bermuda shorts were up 381 per cent on its website in May this year versus the same month in 2024. For men, the interest is likely a welcome break from soaring shorts hemlines – see Alexander Skarsgård appearing on Lorraine in a five-inch pair by S.S. Daley, or Harry Styles stepping out in skimpy Adidas stripes.
But while men's micro-shorts enter the mainstream, longer styles remain the most wearable. Look to Uniqlo for a reliable denim option, or Carhartt and Acne for neutral patterned styles.
It's a similar case in womenswear. If you're bold enough to don Daisy Dukes, more power to you. If not, there are plenty of fashion-forward alternatives out there. There's linen at & Other Stories, cotton at Cos and even suede iterations at Massimo Dutti.
When it comes to denim, 'jorts' (aka knee-length denim shorts) have been an enduring fixture over the last couple of summers; as with jeans, it pays to invest, so look to premium brands for the longest-lasting versions.
'We've had jorts in the collection for a few seasons now, as they are a really great, versatile piece to have in your summer wardrobe,' says Annalisa Dalma, commercial director of Italian denim brand Haikure. 'I particularly love wearing mine with a strappy heel and top on summer evenings but they look equally great worn with flats and a relaxed shirt during the day.'
Clearly, this is a trend that doesn't come up short in the style stakes.

Ripped Rams coach Sean McVay and stunning wife Veronika Khomyn unwind on yacht in St Tropez

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay and his glamorous wife Veronika Khomyn have fled California for some European sun. The 39-year-old and his wife were pictured soaking up the sun aboard a luxury yacht in St Tropez, France on Friday. McVay was snapped without a shirt on, exposing his ripped physique that is most likely the envy of some of his own Rams players. Meanwhile Veronika, a real estate broker at The Agency - the firm that is the focus of the Netflix show 'Buying Beverly Hills' - wore an outfit over her bikini. McVay is surely trying to avoid any talk of football as the upcoming NFL season approaches. The Rams are due to begin the training camp at LMU in Los Angeles on July 24. The pair were believed to have met in Washington DC between 2011-2016 while McVay, 39, worked as tight end coach and offensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders. The couple are making the most of McVay's time off before the Rams begin their training camp During that time, Khomyn was studying international business at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. Khomyn first hinted at their relationship by posting a picture with McVay on Instagram in 2016. The couple tied the knot in a lavish Beverly Hills wedding in June 2022, about four months after McVay won the Rams their second franchise Super Bowl against the Cincinnati Bengals. The couple welcomed their son, Jordan, in October 2023.

OnlyFans star Mikaela Testa reveals she's moving to the US with fiancé Maxwell Krause...after announcing a permanent move to Germany

Mikaela Testa has revealed that she's moving to the US with her fiancé, Maxwell Krause. The OnlyFans star, 25, took to TikTok this week to share the news, after previously telling fans that the couple were moving to Germany. 'We're moving to America,' Mikaela revealed in the expansive video that also featured Maxwell. 'We know there's a giant stigma around people moving to the United States, particularly influencers, and especially at a time like this. 'But my fiancé here is from the United States, and he has been living in Australia with me now for over a year, and his visa just finished up.' From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Mikaela continued, revealing that the move to Germany was only ever intended to be temporary while she waits for the relevant visa approvals. 'We have come to Germany, we're going to stay in Europe for three months, so we can travel around and have fun until our visa gets approved for the United States.' Mikaela, who is currently embroiled in a bitter dispute with fellow OnlyFans star Anna Paul, added that there were no plans to return to Australia if her US visa application was ultimately rejected. 'This [Germany] is obviously our back-up plan – if everything went horribly, we would stay here because we have an apartment here,' she said. 'It was never going to be a hundred per cent; it was just somewhere to be because we didn't want to stay in Australia. 'We think it's just better to be a bit more honest and just say the reason why we actually did leave Australia, as well as me being scared of people turning up at the house.' Maxwell added that, despite having a fondness for Australia, missing his family was a big reason for the move. 'As much as I love Australia, I have wanted to go home for a long time,' he said. 'It is tough being away from all your family, your pets, everything.' Mikaela was also quick to shut down suggestions from some online that she was with Maxwell purely to obtain a US green card. 'I'm from Australia — a very wealthy, beautiful country. I'm not an asylum seeker. They said that I'm using Max for a green card. It's so ridiculous,' she said. 'Max and I have been speaking since 2022... We met in Japan… then we fell in love. Then he got a visa for Australia, and he stayed in Australia for a year.' The couple were also quick to point out that the move was, in no way, a slight on Mikaela's country of origin. 'We will be back there,' Maxwell said. 'We both love Australia – it's not hating on Australia at all.' Mikaela also spoke about the 2023 ordeal that saw her deported from the US. 'Back in 2023, I was turned away at the border and I was sent back to Australia because I didn't have the correct visa type,' she clarified. It's so ridiculous,' she said. 'Max and I have been speaking since met in Japan…then we fell in love. Then he got a visa for Australia, and he stayed in Australia for a year' 'So, obviously I can't go back to the United States without doing a different visa.' It comes after Mikaela revealed, earlier this month, that she had packed up her $2.7 million Gold Coast home and was moving to Germany 'until further notice'. Making the announcement on TikTok, she revealed that an increase in 'youth crime' was the major catalyst for the move. 'I've packed up my entire house, and I'm going in two days, and I don't plan to ever come back,' she said in a video filmed from the kitchen of her waterfront mansion. 'The youth crime in this town where I live is so f***ing bad. I don't want to live here anymore, I don't feel safe here.' 'Every time I move, people find out where I live. My door is made of glass, so people yell things out… sometimes it's really degrading,' she continued. 'I love Australia. I think it's one of the most beautiful countries in the world, but it's just not what it used to be.' Mikaela revealed in October last year that she was engaged to Maxwell. The lovebirds met online in 2022 and continued texting each other throughout 2023.
